Standardization of an ash (Fraxinus excelsior) pollen allergen extract.

BACKGROUND: Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) is the main representative of the Oleaceae family in temperate zones. Diagnosis of ash pollen allergy is made difficult due to (1) an overlapping pollinization period with Betulaceae, (2) non-inclusion in current diagnostic assays, and (3) some cross- reactivity with minor allergens from Betulaceae. The aim of this study was to calibrate an ash pollen in-house reference preparation (IHRP) in allergic patients in order to produce standardized products for diagnosis and immunotherapy purposes. METHODS: Ash pollen IHRP was extracted, ultrafiltered and fr

Gut microbiota assists Streltzoviella insularis to degrade secondary metabolites of Fraxinus pennsylvanica.

BACKGROUND: Streltzoviella insularis is a major woodboring pest in China with a wide host range. Fraxinus pennsylvanica is one of the most severely affected tree species in northern urban areas. Previous studies have indicated that insect gut microbiota may enhance host plant adaptability. However, limited information is available on the diversity, community structure, and functional roles of the gut microbial community of S. insularis. In this study, we characterized the gut microbiota composition and diversity of S. insularis and investigated their role in degrading kaempferol, a defensive s

High-light gaps and carbon allocation regulate regeneration of understory Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings.

Against the backdrop of climate warming, understanding the regeneration mechanisms of seedlings under forest canopies is crucial for the sustainable development of temperate forests. Broad-leaved Korean pine forests serve as the zonally climax vegetation in the Changbai Mountains, however, the causes of regeneration barriers for their primary tree species remain unclear. In particular, while shade-tolerant Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings struggle to regenerate in primary forests, they regenerate well in secondary poplar-birch forests. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism responsible for this

Fraxinus mandshurica SPL2 enhances tolerance to drought stress by activating the phenylpropanoid pathway.

Drought is a major abiotic stressor that severely threatens forest tree growth and survival worldwide. The SQUAMOSA promoter binding protein-like (SPL) family is a group of plant-specific transcription factors that play important roles in plant growth, development, and environmental adaptation. Our study showed that overexpression of Fraxinus mandshurica SPL2 (FmSPL2) promotes lignin biosynthesis and enhances drought tolerance. Phenotypic analysis indicated that the stomatal aperture of FmSPL2-OE1 and FmSPL2-OE2 was reduced by 12.05% and 19.23%, respectively, compared to the wild type (WT). Ad

How Thermal Modification Affects the Short-Term Bending Creep Behaviour of Fraxinus Excelsior Wood.

Among wood types used in industry, ash wood is one of the most commonly heat-treated species. It is widely applied for outdoor applications such as cladding, terrace boards, and garden furniture, as well as in indoor applications that require high dimensional stability. Although the mechanical properties of thermally modified ash have been extensively studied, its creep behaviour under sustained load remains insufficiently described. This study evaluates the short-term creep behaviour of ash wood thermally modified at 210 °C under bending stress, based on deflection measurements at different s
