This article is referring to the study of the "limit" according to a metapsychological point of view. The main definition of this concept concerns its double possibility to relate and to separate the internal from the external reality. It is about a review of the post-freudian work: the theoretical contribution of the authors P. Federn, D. Anzieu and D.W. Winnicott is viewed through the conceptualisation of the "limit". Also, the study of A. Green, who is the author who proposed not only the concept of the "limit" but also the concept of the "double limit". P. Federn distinguished the Ego in i

Sigmund Freud developed Drive Theory from clinical observations and proposed that a limited set of basic drives, including hunger, thirst, sleep, sexuality, and attachment, contributes to psychological stability. Modern reinterpretations allow these drives to be discussed alongside neurobiological regulation, including serotonergic and opioidergic signalling, which are relevant to depressive disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors remain a common first line pharmacological option, yet treatment response varies, and simplified deficiency accounts are debated in the current literature

Sigmund Freud´s drive theory, often (and erroneously) referred to as his theory of the instincts, was an early attempt to describe the motivations behind both healthy and mentally ill individuals. In his final formulation, Freud identified two main categories of drives: life drives (which he termed Eros), encompassing physiological drives, and a set of inherent impulses, including self-destructive tendencies (which he called "death drives"), with masochism - a form of auto-addictive disorder - as a prime example. Freud´s drive theory was developed with the framework of a 19th-century medical m

Various authors have argued that dissociative amnesia is a synonym for repressed memories, recovered memories are almost always false memories, and dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder are not valid disorders. These authors commit numerous errors of logic and scholarship; they misunderstand Freud's thinking about childhood sexual abuse, dissociation and repression and blame both Freudian repression theory and Freudian therapists for an epidemic of false memories. In fact, however, Freudian repression theory is based on the assumption that the childhood sexual abuse never hap

The nature of the drive toward forming and maintaining intense attachments with other human beings has been examined in the light of case material from the play therapy sessions of a ten-year-old boy. The primary question addressed concerns the relationship of the attachment drive to other drive systems. Freudian theory, object relations theory, and attachment theory present competing paradigms for understanding the relationship between the drives. The Freudian paradigm sees human attachment as derivative from other drives, especially the sexual drive. In developing his attachment theory, Bowl

The problem of anxiety allows us to test the validity of our metapsychological conceptions. Fear as an adaptive reaction to danger, should be sharply distinguished for anxiety. Fear as such is not present in the infant. Anxiety is the primary phenomenon. It is the result and the translation of the internal attack by the free drive-energy, whose achieved shape is the so-called death-drive. Both "life-drive" and "death-drive" are of sexual nature, but the later operates according to the purest primary process, whereas the former, cathexes more or less stable objects and, in the first place, the

Starting from a contemporary critique of the DSM-IV, this paper argues that the diagnostic categories of panic disorder somatization, and undifferentiated somatoform disorders can be understood as belonging to a common type of psychopathology--i.e., the Freudian actual neuroses. In addition to their strong clinical similarity, these disorders share an etiological similarity; and the authors propose a combination of Freud's focus on this type of patient's inability to represent an endogenous drive arousal with the post-Freudian focus on separation anxiety. An etiological hypothesis is put forwa

This article examines Talcott Parsons's efforts at building the theory of personality system as a special case of his general theory of action and places those efforts in historical context. I demonstrate how, during the middle decades of the twentieth century, Parsons employed elements of classic Freudian thought to advance a new appreciation of the personality system and its relations to other action systems. I begin with an overview of the reception of psychoanalysis at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Harvard Department of Social

Starting from his early writings, Freud devoted much thought to "obsessional neurosis" and continued developing this theme for more than thirty years. However, unlike the disorder hysteria, which in recent years has regained its honorable status in psychoanalytic literature, obsessional neurosis has been continually neglected and relegated to the fields of psychiatry and behavioral psychology, which emphasize the symptomatic and the overt. This process, by clinging to the objective aspects of obsessional neurosis and disassociating it from the instincts and from its historical sources, may its

Freud's ideas on the development and psychological characteristics of girls and women, though laden with rich clinical and theoretical discoveries and achievements, appear to have been significantly flawed by the influence of traditional patriarchal and evolutionary values. This influence is evident in certain questionable presuppositions, logical errors and inconsistencies, suspensions of intensive inquiry, underemphasis on certain developmental variables, and confusions between observations, definitions, and value preferences. Under three headings-The Problem of Women's Morality and Objectiv

This paper is about sexual perversion and its enactment. It is divided into three parts, including, a consideration of William Gillespie's reading of Freud with Klein as the basis on which he formulated a general theory of perversion; a selective reading of more recent works on the psychoanalysis of perversion; and a clinical contribution to the analysis of a case of scopophilia.

Freud once planned a comprehensive "study of man's love life." Although only fragments of this project ever appeared in print, much of it can be reconstructed from Freud's letters and other sources. After tracing the evolution of Freud's thinking on this topic, the author proposes that there are five functions of the ego which are associated with falling in love. The bliss of falling in love is seen as the result of a revival of feelings that once belonged to the symbiotic phase of infancy. Other findings of Mahler are considered in terms of their significance for the understanding of love.

This paper discusses the oeuvres of two psychoanalytic scholars: Laplanche and Loewald. Each has made significant contributions to psychoanalytic theory and its influence on clinical interactions. Both distinguished analysts have engaged in serious, yet different challenges to Freudian theory. This paper will offer some similarities in their theoretical approaches, but the emphasis is on their special differences. Underscoring their significant departures a clinical example is provided which illuminates their essential distinctions. In this context I am highlighting both their unique views on

Lacan's reinterpretation of Freud's theory on trauma Abstract In this article we consider the Lacanian theory of trauma, with the aim of demonstrating which of Freud's theories Lacan sought to build on and develop in his own model. This approach highlights the continuity, as well as the divergences, between Lacanian psychoanalysis and the Freudian model of trauma. Approaching Lacanian psychoanalysis through the concept of trauma reveals how his theories did not focus only on the subject as determined by the register of language. Rather, Lacanian psychoanalysis emphasises the intimate relations

This article explores the psychical expression of autoimmunity in the analytic situation; it is informed by biological theories of autoimmunity in contemporary immunology. Several of my patients developed autoimmune conditions in the course of their analyses, leading me to consider the role of psychical change in disrupting one's somatopsychic equilibrium. In the psychoanalytic literature, autoimmunity is used metaphorically for attack against what is foreign or unwanted in ourselves. Contemporary immunology, however, suggests a somewhat different metaphor. "Self-reactive" cells present in the

After decades of neglect, sociology is experiencing a revival of interest in psychoanalytic insights, and Erich Fromm's work is uniquely valuable for encouraging dialogue between the two fields. A recipient of a PhD in sociology as a young man in the 1920s, Fromm was a prominent psychoanalytic theorist and clinician, as well as a social researcher and public intellectual in the 1930s, up to his death in 1980. After a historical account of the relative neglect of Fromm in both disciplines, this paper examines the place of his psychoanalytic theory within sociology today as a way of discussing s

Psychoanalysis has been grounded in Freud's discovery of the profound impact of unconscious processes on human being and meaning. And yet, his theories and technique pushed towards the more rational realms of meaning-making. He recognized the extent to which female development remained a "dark" and unexplored "continent" but seemed to turn a deaf ear to those women, such as Karen Horney, who had a seat at the table as psychoanalysis was forming. One hundred years later, Horney's theorizing about what impedes our ability to recognize more fully the capacities and vulnerabilities inherent in the

The author discusses the claustrum as an aspect of pathological containment within inner space and its relation to Bion's (1962a, b) container-contained concept. Having outlined the early psychoanalytic conceptual foundations of claustrophobia and the claustrum, the author charts the term from its introduction by Erikson in 1937 through its divergent developmental trajectories within the conceptual vocabulary of the classical, Independent and Kleinian schools up to Meltzer's (1992) contemporary reworking. The vicissitudes of the transmission of ideas within and between these groups is stressed

An exploration of all Freud's writings on trauma from 1885 is proposed. Trauma, a central concept in his first works, always kept a place in his theory. He conceived it as a consequence of an external perception leading to a sudden affect which cannot be mastered by the psyche. For him, the excitation is so strong that it threatens the ego and provokes a breach of the protective shield. The idea that he would have renounced to this topic at the end of the nineteenth century is irrational.
