Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the second commonest cause of young onset dementia. Our understanding of FTD and its related syndromes has advanced significantly in recent years. Among the most prominent areas of progress is the overlap between FTD, MND, and other neurodegenerative conditions at a clinicopathologic and genetic level. In parallel major advances in neuroimaging techniques, the discovery of new genetic mutations as well as the development of potential biomarkers may serve to further expand knowledge of the biologic processes at play in FTD and may in turn propel research toward

Frontotemporal dementia is an umbrella clinical term that encompasses a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterised by progressive deficits in behaviour, executive function, or language. Frontotemporal dementia is a common type of dementia, particularly in patients younger than 65 years. The disease can mimic many psychiatric disorders because of the prominent behavioural features. Various underlying neuropathological entities lead to the frontotemporal dementia clinical phenotype, all of which are characterised by the selective degeneration of the frontal and temporal cortices. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) encompasses several clinical syndromes that involve a progressive change in behavior and/or language; it is more common than Alzheimer's disease in early-onset dementia under the age of 60 years. In the behavioral variant of FTD (bvFTD) patients have social and emotional changes with prominent disinhibition, apathy, lack of empathy, changes in diet, and repetitive behaviors. Motor neuron disease or parkinsonism are seen in association with bvFTD. Frontal and/or temporal atrophy are often seen on structural brain imaging. Several pathological entities can cause bvF

BACKGROUND: Among the primary degenerative dementias, frontotemporal dementia (FTD, Pick's disease) is very important along with Alzheimer's disease. The estimated prevalence is 15:100,000 in the 45- to 64-year-old population; thus, it appears that the FTD as a cause for so-called presenile dementia is nearly as common as Alzheimer's disease.
CASE REPORT: The case of a 52-year-old woman is described that presented with slowly progressive lack of concentration and disturbance of memory. Furthermore, the immediate family had noticed a change in her premorbid personality. Due to additional depre

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal dementia accounts for up to 20% of cases of dementia in the presenium, yet remains poorly recognised. Diagnostic criteria have been devised to aid clinical diagnosis.
AIMS: To provide an overview of clinical and pathological characteristics of frontotemporal dementia and its nosological status.
METHODS: The review summarises consensus diagnostic criteria for frontotemporal dementia and draws on the authors' clinical experience of 300 frontotemporal dementia cases, and pathological experience of 50 autopsied cases.
RESULTS: Frontotemporal dementia is characterised

Defined barely one decade ago, Frontotemporal Dementia emerges as a new clinical entity that reestablishes the classical Pick's disease as part of a extensive syndrome with important and unsuspected prevalence. Frontotemporal Dementia includes all primary degenerative processes starting in the anterior portions of the brain. This type of dementia is clinically characterized by behavior and personality disorders, more than cognitive alterations. In the present research we performed a bibliographic review of the subject including clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, and neuropathology. Fu

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a heterogeneous disorder with distinct clinical phenotypes associated with multiple neuropathologic entities. Presently, the term FTD encompasses clinical disorders that include changes in behavior, language, executive control, and often motor symptoms. The core FTD spectrum disorders include behavioral variant FTD, nonfluent/agrammatic variant primary progressive aphasia, and semantic variant PPA. Related FTD disorders include frontotemporal dementia with motor neuron disease, progressive supranuclear palsy syndrome, and corticobasal syndrome. In this article,

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is an uncommon but important form of degenerative disease. It may make up 50% of dementia cases presenting before age 60. The symptoms are related to the anatomic areas affected. Neary divided the clinical syndromes into "frontotemporal dementia," "progressive nonfluent aphasia," and "semantic dementia." However, the pathology may extend beyond the frontal and temporal lobes and additional symptoms may be found. Although most cases are sporadic, some cases are genetic. The best-known genetic mutation causing FTD is frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism, linked

In this case study, we describe the symptoms, neuropsychological testing, and brain pathology of a man with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). FTD most often presents with either a change in personality or behavior, such as social withdrawal, increased gregariousness, disinhibition, or obsessive behaviors; or with impairment of language function. Memory difficulties are common, but usually are less prominent than these other symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Frequently, psychiatric diagnoses are initially the primary consideration. Cases may be either familial or sporadic. In this famil

Frontotemporal dementia is a rare form of progressive intellectual deterioration. Its most prominent clinical features are alterations in personality, motivation, and social conduct whereas memory and orientation remain largely unimpaired. Several underlying neurodegenerative processes may be distinguished which are confined to the cerebral cortex in most cases but occasionally involve the basal ganglia and rarely the anterior horn cells. Most frequently, histopathological examination reveals a non-specific loss of neurons accompanied by reactive gliosis. In a minority of cases, globose intran

Frontotemporal dementia is a new name for clinical Pick's disease; the eponymic term PiD has been increasingly restricted to the pathologic variant with Pick bodies. This article describes the clinical picture, pathology, and genetic mechanisms of frontal lobe dementia. Frontotemporal dementia is still under-diagnosed and underestimated, partly because the individual components of the complex are considered separately or are considered "heterogeneous," a somewhat misleading adjective used in many descriptions. This article emphasizes the considerable overlap among the different varieties of fr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the common behavioral and cognitive features of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and related disorders as well as the distinguishing clinical, genetic, and pathologic features of the most common subtypes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in clinical phenotyping, genetics, and biomarkers have enabled improved predictions of the specific underlying molecular pathology associated with different presentations of FTD. Evaluation of large international cohorts has led to recent refinements in diagnostic criteria for several of the FTD subtypes.
SUMMARY: The FTDs are a

Frontotemporal dementias (FTD) account for only 5-7% of all dementia aetiologies. However, FTD is one common form of dementia in the presenile period with a symptom onset between an age of 45 and 65 years. FTD are clinically classified into a group of rare genetic variants, the behavioural variant, primary progressive aphasias and a variant including motor neuron symptoms (FTD-MNS). In recent years the pathobiological characteristics of some FTD variants was clarified, demonstrating a pathological accumulation of TAR-DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) as a common pathological substrate. Frontotemporal dementias are the second largest degenerative dementia group after Alzheimer's disease. It is a clinical syndrome corresponding to at least three histological entities: Pick's disease, non-specific frontotemporal degeneration, frontal lobe abnormalities associated with motor neuron disease. There are four group of symptoms in the clinical description of FTD: behavioural disorder, affective symptoms, speech disorders, neurological signs. FTD is associated with primary degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes. Histologically there was neuronal loss, microvacuolation, tau- an

Around one-third of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is autosomal dominant with the major genetic causes being mutations in MAPT, GRN and C9orf72. Studying familial forms of FTD can provide a window into the earliest stages of the illness, many years before symptoms start. Large cohort studies have been set up in recent years to better understand this presymptomatic phase, including the Genetic FTD Initiative (GENFI) and the Advancing Research and Treatment for Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration and Longitudinal Evaluation of Familial Frontotemporal Dementia Subjects (ARTFL/LEFFTDS) studies. The term of the frontotemporal dementia was first proposed by Lund and Manchester group in 1994, but the definition of frontotemporal dementia has been still controversial. Frontotemporal dementia is caused by several diseases which have fronto-temporal atrophy. The diseases are collectedly designated as frontotempoal degeneration. The frontotemporal degeneration encompasses several diseases such as Pick disease (frontotemporal degeneration with Pick bodies) and frontotemporal degeneration with ubiquitin-positive inclusions and frontotemporal degeneration (no inclusion bodies are observed). PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews many of the complex facets of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). A particular focus is on improving diagnostic accuracy to reduce the arduous diagnostic odyssey that so many patients and families endure. Strategies to promote diagnostic accuracy and approach the management of problematic symptoms are also discussed.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although the International Consensus Criteria for bvFTD were published more than a decade ago and clinicopathologic studies have confirmed their utility, diagnost
