BACKGROUND: Language processing is organized in brain networks, generally lateralized to the left hemisphere. In clinical routine, task-based functional MRI (fMRI) is the gold standard for non-invasive evaluation of language lateralization. However, standard fMRI does not account for the individual heterogeneity of language networks. fMRI-based functional connectivity analysis (FCA) has addressed this shortcoming by identifying correlates of dysfunctional language networks in epilepsy patients. In order to individualize FCA, translation of group-based network analysis to individual epilepsy pa

By comparing the results of tapping with and without simultaneous speaking and by evaluating their lateral differences the probable lateralization of functional speech centre was established in 28 patients with torticollis spasmodicus and 28 healthy controls. In doing this, it became evident that unlike the controls the patients as a hole in a significant way lateralized the speech centre more frequently to the right. The changed cerebral laterality in the patients was supposed to be stimulated by pronounced emotional conflicts and to be involved in the disease of torticollis spasmodicus.

The ability to detect environmental changes is essential to determine the appropriate reaction when facing potential threats. Both detection and reaction functions are critical to survival, and the superior performance of motor reaction for the dominant hand is well recognized in humans. However, it is not clear whether there exists laterality in sensitivity to detect external changes and whether the possible laterality is associated with sensory modality and stimulus intensity. Here, we tested whether the perceptual sensitivity and electrophysiological responses elicited by graded sensory sti

Child maltreatment (CM) is the most important preventable risk factor for psychopathology and there is a pressing need to understand how CM gets 'under the skin' to markedly increase risk in some individuals as well as a comparable effort to identify factors associated with better than expected outcomes in other individuals. This special issue of Child Maltreatment provides a series of sophisticated studies on the neurobiological impact of CM, of which we have chosen 4 articles to comment on.The articles by Oshri et al., and Peveril, Sheridan, Busso & McLaughlin are amygdala centric and provid

To explore alterations of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in sensorimotor cortex following strokes with left or right hemiplegia considering the lateralization and neuroplasticity. Seventy-three resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) files were selected, including 26 from left hemiplegia (LH), 21 from right hemiplegia (RH) and 26 from normal controls (NC) group. Whole-brain analyses matching the Pearson correlation were used for rsFC calculations. For right-handed normal controls, rsFC of motor components (M1 and M2) in the left hemisphere displayed a prominen

Residual hand use in functional tasks, extent of laterality, and right or left preference were studied in 145 2- to 24-year-old, postregression Australian subjects with Rett syndrome via parent questionnaire. Hand use was markedly restricted, more for complex than simple and for external (touching food and objects) than internal tasks (scratching, rubbing eyes), suggesting a deficit in cerebral control of external, goal-oriented hand use, which is perhaps genetically determined because there is significantly greater restriction of external tasks in subjects with demonstrated MECP2 mutations. Purpose To measure the accuracy of resting-state functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in determining hemispheric language dominance in patients with medically intractable focal epilepsies against the results of an intracarotid amobarbital procedure (IAP). Materials and Methods This study was approved by the institutional review board, and all subjects gave signed informed consent. Data in 23 patients with medically intractable focal epilepsy were retrospectively analyzed. All 23 patients were candidates for epilepsy surgery and underwent both IAP and resting-state functional MR imaging a

This study aimed to characterize cerebral perfusion in men with Klinefelter's syndrome, known to present specific deficits in language, using (99m)Tc- hexamethylpropylene-amine-oxime scintigraphy and Talairach normalization. While a perfusion asymmetry toward the left hemisphere was found in controls, perfusion was mostly symmetrical in Klinefelter patients in the upper temporal and lower parietal areas. Scores on verbal tests were inversely correlated with perfusion changes, providing neurobiological substrate of anomalous cerebral laterality.

BACKGROUND: Perturbations on the Left-Right axis establishment lead to laterality defects, with frequently associated Congenital Heart Diseases (CHDs). Indeed, in the last decade, it has been reported that the etiology of isolated cases of CHDs or cases of laterality defects with associated CHDs is linked with variants of genes involved in the Nodal signaling pathway.
METHODS: With this in mind, we analyzed a cohort of 38 unrelated patients with Congenital Heart Defects that can arise from initial perturbations in the formation of the Left-Right axis and 40 unrelated ethnically matched health

INTRODUCTION: The angular gyrus (AG) is consistently reported in neuroimaging studies of episodic memory retrieval and is a fundamental node within the default mode network (DMN). Its specific contribution to episodic memory is debated, with some suggesting it is important for the subjective experience of episodic recollection, rather than retrieval of objective episodic details. Across studies of episodic retrieval, the left AG is recruited more reliably than the right. We explored functional connectivity of the right and left AG with the DMN during rest and retrieval to assess whether connec

In the human brain, the corpus callosum is the major white-matter commissural tract enabling the transmission of sensory-motor, and higher level cognitive information between homotopic regions of the two cerebral hemispheres. Despite developmental absence (i.e., agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC), functional connectivity is preserved, including interhemispheric connectivity. Subcortical structures have been hypothesised to provide alternative pathways to enable this preservation. To test this hypothesis, we used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) recordings in children with AgCC

Humans exhibit laterality preferences, with handedness being the most extensively studied. Accordingly, brain-handedness associations are well documented. However, laterality preferences extend beyond handedness to include other limbs, such as footedness and eyedness. Despite these distinctions, brain-footedness and brain-eyedness associations using resting-state functional connectomes remain largely unexplored. We utilize two large datasets, the Human Connectome Project-Development (HCP-D) and Human Connectome Project-Aging (HCP-A), to study the associations between sidedness (i.e., handednes

There is much evidence of frontotemporal lateralized abnormalities in schizophrenia. However, the relationship has not yet been examined between performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, with supposed anterior left dominance and event-related potential (ERP) asymmetry. ERPs recorded at homologous bilateral sites were compared using statistical permutation methods. Patients had an unexpected abnormal lateralization over occipital regions, preceding slow anterior potentials. This indicates a defect in early stages of information processing, which may contribute to prevent further hemispher

OBJECTIVE: Both major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) exhibit an illness-related functional cerebral laterality with a frontal right/left asymmetry. Using experimental pain lateralization as a putative indicator of functional cerebral laterality, we assessed body side differences in pressure, cold and heat pain thresholds in patients with MDD and PD as well as in healthy control subjects (HC). To control for an attentional bias in perception, reaction times for selective attention were also measured for both visual fields.
METHOD: 21 inpatients with MDD, 21 inpatients with P

Both language experience and processing strategy have been found to affect functional lateralization of the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT). In this study, we adopted a factorial design to investigate the effects of language experience and processing strategy on functional lateralization of different vOT subregions in the processing of familiar (Chinese characters) and unfamiliar characters (Korean Hangul characters) in logographic writings. The processing strategy was manipulated by using part- and whole-based judgement tasks to induce part- and whole-based processing, respectively. The

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prominent posterior cerebral artery (PCA) laterality upon 3-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography is often encountered in patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion. We hypothesized that this sign is correlated with improved functional outcome in patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion treated with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator.
METHODS: Fifty acute ischemic stroke patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion were treated with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator from April 2007 to October 2009. Al

Seeing an object on one occasion may facilitate or prime processing of the same object if it is later again encountered. Such priming may also be found -- but at a reduced level -- for different but perceptually similar objects that are alternative exemplars or 'tokens' of the initially presented object. We explored the neural correlates of this perceptual specificity using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedures, contrasting neural activity when participants made object classification decisions (size judgments) regarding previously presented objects (repeated sam

The mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR), which includes the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) and the cuneiform nucleus (CN), has been recently identified as a key structure for locomotion and gait control in mammals. However, the function and the precise anatomy of the MLR remain unclear in humans. To study the lateral mesencephalus, we used fMRI in 15 right-handed healthy volunteers performing two tasks: imagine walking in a hallway and imagine an object moving along the same hallway. Both tasks were performed at two different speeds: normal and 30% faster. We identified two distinct networks

In the present review, we summarize the most recent findings and current views about the structural and functional basis of human brain lateralization in the auditory modality. Main emphasis is given to hemodynamic and electromagnetic data of healthy adult participants with regard to music- vs. speech-sound encoding. Moreover, a selective set of behavioral dichotic-listening (DL) results and clinical findings (e.g., schizophrenia, dyslexia) are included. It is shown that human brain has a strong predisposition to process speech sounds in the left and music sounds in the right auditory cortex i
