[Functional neuroimaging in adults].

A consensus has not been reached on the proper role of the different functional neuroimaging techniques available for the exploration of drug-resistant partial epilepsy, particularly in preparation for surgery. Several studies have suggested the potential contribution of positron emission tomography (PET) with [18F]-fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG), [11C]-flumazenil (FMZ), or [11C]-alpha-methyl-tryptophane (AMT), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to measure ictal cerebral blood flow, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of language a

[Functional neuroimaging of addiction].

Positron emission tomography studies investigating dopamine release by drug or reward demonstrated blunted dopamine release in relation to addiction to psychostimulants such as cocaine and amphetamine. However, recent studies reported that nicotine and gambling addiction showed opposite results. Several factors such as illness stage or neurotoxicity of substances could be considered for this discrepancy. Behavioral addiction such as gambling disorder is a good target of neuroimaging because it is free from overt neurotoxicity. However, even in gambling disorder, the results of fMRI studies inv

Functional Neuroimaging in Obesity Research.

Functional neuroimaging is beginning to yield valuable insights into the neurobiological underpinnings of the effects of obesity on neural circuits. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies have been used to identify aberrant activation patterns in regions implicated in reward (e.g., striatum, orbitofrontal cortex, insula), emotion and memory (e.g., amygdala, hippocampus), sensory and motor processing (e.g., insula, precentral gyrus), and cognitive control and attention (e.g., prefrontal cor

Functional neuroimaging in epileptic encephalopathies.

Epileptic encephalopathies (EEs) represent a group of severe epileptic disorders associated with cognitive and behavioral disturbances. The mechanisms of cognitive disability in EEs remain unclear. This review summarized neuroimaging studies that have tried to describe specific fingerprints of brain activation in EE. Although the epileptic activity can be generated individually in different brain regions, it seems likely that the activity propagates in a syndrome-specific way. In some EEs, the epileptiform discharges were associated with an interruption of activity in the default mode network.

Functional neuroimaging in Parkinson's disease.

The use of functional imaging in neurodegenerative diseases has increased in recent years, with applications in research into the underlying pathophysiology, aiding in diagnosis, or evaluating new treatments. In Parkinson's disease (PD), these imaging methods have expanded our understanding of the disease beyond dopaminergic deficits. Moreover, functional imaging methods have described alterations in functional networks relating not only to the motor symptoms, but also to many nonmotor features of PD, such as cognitive dysfunction. From a clinical viewpoint, functional imaging methods can assi

Functional neuroimaging in Tourette syndrome.

Functional neuroimaging of neuropsychiatric disorders is a complex discipline requiring skills in medical science, philosophy, and technical physics. This review first examines the broad categories of functional imaging studies that have been utilized in this area, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. This review then looks at much of the available literature on functional imaging in Tourette syndrome (TS) and provides a synthesis of data. The review will also examine the different methodologies employed and will suggest which methodologies are most likely to lead to elucid

Functional neuroimaging and childhood autism.

Childhood autism is now widely viewed as being of developmental neurobiological origin. Yet, localised structural and functional brain correlates of autism have to be established. Structural brain-imaging studies performed in autistic patients have reported abnormalities such as increased total brain volume and cerebellar abnormalities. However, none of these abnormalities fully account for the full range of autistic symptoms. Functional brain imaging, such as positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and functional MRI (fMRI) have added a new persp

Functional neuroimaging in specific phobia.

Specific phobias (SPs) are common, with lifetime prevalence estimates of 10%. Our current understanding of their pathophysiology owes much to neuroimaging studies, which enabled us to construct increasingly efficient models of the underlying neurocircuitry. We provide an updated, comprehensive review and analyze the relevant literature of functional neuroimaging studies in specific phobias. Findings are presented according to the functional neuroanatomy of patients with SPs. We performed a careful search of the major medical and psychological databases by crossing SP with each neuroimaging tec

Functional neuroimaging of primary headache disorders.

Until recently, primary headache disorders, such as migraine and cluster headache were considered to be vascular in origin. However, advances in neuroimaging techniques, such as positron emission tomography, single photon emission computed tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging have augmented the growing clinical evidence that these headaches are primarily driven from the brain. This review covers functional imaging studies in migraine, cluster headache, rarer headache syndromes and experimental head pain. Together with newer techniques, such as voxel-based morphometry and magnet

Functional neuroimaging of visuo-vestibular interaction.

The brain combines visual, vestibular and proprioceptive information to distinguish between self- and world motion. Often these signals are complementary and indicate that the individual is moving or stationary with respect to the surroundings. However, conflicting visual motion and vestibular cues can lead to ambiguous or false sensations of motion. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore human brain activation when visual and vestibular cues were either complementary or in conflict. We combined a horizontally moving optokinetic stimulus with caloric irrigation

Functional neuroimaging of dressing-related skills.

Restoration of motor function following stroke involves reorganization of motor output through intact pathways, with compensatory brain activity likely variable by task. One class of motor tasks, those involved in self-care, is particularly important in stroke rehabilitation. Identifying the brain areas that are engaged in self-care and how they reorganize after stroke may enable development of more effective rehabilitation strategies. We piloted a paradigm for functional MRI assessment of self-care activity. In two groups, young adults and older adults, two self-care tasks (buttoning and zipp

Functional neuroimaging studies in functional dyspepsia patients: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence in support of the presence of abnormal central changes (compared to healthy controls) in functional dyspepsia (FD) in addition to the peripheral changes in gastrointestinal tract. PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to provide an integrative understanding of the abnormal functional brain activity, visceral sensation, dyspeptic symptoms, and psychological changes of FD. Electronic and hand searches were conducted to identify functional neuroimaging studies involving FD patients. Sixteen studies were selected and divided into three categories: 10 restin

Functional neuroimaging and chorea: a systematic review.

Blood lactate and blood pressure measurements are important predictors of life-threatening complications after infant open-heart surgeries requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). We have developed an intravascular nitric oxide (NO)-releasing 5-Fr catheter that contains a lactate sensor for continuous in-blood lactate monitoring and a dedicated lumen for third-party pressure sensor attachment. This device has antimicrobial and antithrombotic properties and can be implanted intravascularly. The importance of this design is its ability to inhibit thrombosis, due to the slow release of NO through

Recent advances in functional neuroimaging of gait.

In this review, we discuss the contribution of functional neuroimaging to the understanding of the cerebral control of gait in humans, both in healthy subjects and in patients with Parkinson's disease. We illustrate different approaches that have been used to address this issue, ranging from the imaging of actual gait performance to the study of initiation and imagery of gait. We also consider related approaches focused on specific aspects of gait, like those addressed by repetitive foot movements. We provide a critical discussion of advantages and disadvantages of each approach, emphasizing c

[Functional neuroimaging of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia].

The neurobiological bases underlying the generation of auditory hallucinations, a distressing and paradigmatic symptom of schizophrenia, are still unknown in spite of in-depth phenomenological descriptions. This work aims to make a critical review of the latest published literature in recent years, focusing on functional neuroimaging studies (PET, SPECT, fMRI) of auditory hallucinations. Thus, the studies are classified according to whether they are sensory activation, trait and state. The two main hypotheses proposed to explain the phenomenon, external speech vs. subvocal or inner speech, are

[Biological markers of schizophrenic symptoms: functional neuroimaging].

Despite heterogeneous phenotype, lack of pathognomonic symptoms and great variability of symptoms during the course of the illness, functional neuroimaging studies have showed specific patterns of activation associated to particular schizophrenic symptoms or symptom dimensions. Negative symptoms have been associated to hypofrontality; auditory hallucinations seem to be related to abnormalities in brain regions involved in language and, reality distortion dimension has been associated to left temporal lobe impairments.

Neuroimaging and functional outcome of neonatal leukomalacia.

Leukomalacia is a major cause of neurological impairment in the high-risk newborn. It can be identified during the early postnatal period by means of ultrasound (US) imaging of the brain, through the anterior fontanel. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) permits an optimal differentiation of brain tissue and of its abnormalities, without resorting to ionizing radiation or intravenous contrast. It is particularly appropriate for following the evolution of leukomalacia, after fontanel closure. Ninety-five fullterm and preterm infants with cystic and non-cystic leukomalacia, documented by US, were c
