Reuse of explanted permanent pacemakers donated by funeral homes.

Poor patients in developing countries may not receive permanent pacemakers (PPMs) even as lifesaving measures because of their high cost. In this report we examined whether PPMs that were explanted and donated by funeral homes in the United States could be safely and effectively reused in indigent patients in India. With permission from the deceased patients' families, 121 PPMs were explanted and donated by funeral homes for reuse. These PPMs were sterilized and sent for implantation in needy and indigent patients at a charity hospital in Mumbai, India. From the pool of donated 121 PPMs, 53 (8

Tuberculosis risk in funeral home employees.

In order to estimate the risk of tuberculosis infection among employees in the funeral service industry, we conducted a risk-assessment study of a convenience sample of funeral home employees. Study participants completed a risk-assessment questionnaire and underwent tuberculin skin testing. Of 864 employees tested, 101 (11.7%) had a reactive tuberculin skin test. Reactivity to the tuberculin skin test was significantly associated with job category; funeral home employees with a present or past history of embalming deceased-human remains were twice as likely to be reactive as were non-embalmin

Assessment of formaldehyde exposures under contemporary embalming conditions in U.S. funeral homes.

The funeral service profession has used formaldehyde-containing embalming solutions for the preparation of decedents since the early 1900s. The available literature regarding funeral director exposure to formaldehyde largely consists of data collected prior to 2000, with most studies reporting task-length exposure concentrations rather than full-shift time-weighted average concentrations. As formaldehyde undergoes review in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) risk evaluation process, accurately characterizing long-term exposure potential in this profess

An observational study of safe and risky practices in funeral homes in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Funeral home personnel are at risk of exposure to infectious hazards. The high prevalence of infectious diseases in South Africa means that these workers and family members of deceased individuals are vulnerable to infection if proper safety measures and equipment are not used. OBJECTIVES: To collect observational information on funeral industry practices in order to assess the safety of handling corpses and exposure to risk that could result in disease transmission. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted across two locations from August to October 2015. Funeral homes in

Partnering with Black Funeral Home Directors to Reduce Mortality and Gun Violence.

For generations, Black Funeral Home Directors BFHDs have operated within the Black community, accumulating extensive knowledge of multiple family generations impacted by firearm-related deaths and possessing decades of neighborhood-level insights. BFHDs can be key allies in developing and implementing premature death and violence prevention efforts. The increasing incidence of chronic disease, suicide, and homicide related to gun violence among Black Americans, particularly in low-income neighborhoods, represents a significant public health threat and social justice issue. The Epidemiological

Evaluation of total VOC exposure and ventilation controls in funeral home preparation rooms: A case study from Grenada.

Funeral home (FH) preparation rooms pose potential occupational health hazards due to exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during embalming and autopsy procedures. This analytical observational study assessed indoor air quality (IAQ) hygiene conditions in all three funeral homes operating in Grenada using total volatile organic compound (TVOC) concentrations as an exposure indicator. Air sampling was conducted during 18 embalming and autopsy sessions between February and June 2025 using a GrayWolf AdvancedSense Pro monitor with a photoionization detector. Concurrent measuremen

The experiences on how living funerals impact the psychological well-being and sense of closure for terminally ill patients -Case report.

Terminally ill individuals often grapple with various psychological challenges as they face their mortality. While traditional funerals provide solace to the bereaved, living funerals have emerged as a distinct opportunity for both the patient and their loved ones to socially participate in the farewell. This case report highlights the impact on the psychological well-being and sense of closure for Ms. T, a Singaporean patient with terminal ovarian cancer, who hosted her own living funeral. Ms. T was receiving home hospice care. Her symptoms (including pain, discomfort, insomnia, nausea, fatig

Autopsy, thanatopraxy, cemeteries and crematoria as hotspots of toxic organic contaminants in the funeral industry continuum.

The occurrence and health risks of toxic organic contaminants (TOCs) in the funeral industry are relatively under-studied compared to other industries. An increasing body of literature reports TOCs including emerging contaminants in the funeral industry, but comprehensive reviews of the evidence are still lacking. Hence, evidence was analysed to address the proposition that, the funeral industry constitutes several hotspot reservoirs of a wide spectrum of TOCs posing ecological and human health risks. TOCs detected include embalming products, persistent organic pollutants, synthetic pesticides

Using Public Funeral and Obituary Listings to Identify Spikes in Excess Mortality in One Appalachian County.

INTRODUCTION: Delays (10-22 months) in availability of official state and county-level mortality data could have significant public health consequences. The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the need for health officials to access timely death data to identify unexpected increases in mortality in their communities. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine if funeral home listings and/or newspaper obituaries could help identify excess mortality on the local level, prior to the availability of official death records. METHODS: To calculate excess mortality, four years (2017-2020) of data

Banking brains: a pre-mortem "how to" guide to successful donation.

A review of the brain banking literature reveals a primary focus either on the factors that influence the decision to become a future donor or on the brain tissue processing that takes place after the individual has died (i.e., the front-end or back-end processes). What has not been sufficiently detailed, however, is the complex and involved process that takes place after this decision to become a future donor is made yet before post-mortem processing occurs (i.e., the large middle-ground). This generally represents a period of many years during which the brain bank is actively engaged with do

Potential health hazards for students exposed to formaldehyde in the gross anatomy laboratory.

Formaldehyde, which has been a well-established preservative for cadavers in the anatomy laboratory for years, has an odor that many anatomy students find unpleasant. Anatomy faculty and students, embalmers in funeral homes, histopathology laboratory workers, and other biological researchers are continually exposed to the toxic vapors of formaldehyde. The immediate effects of that agent are nausea, headache, and ocular irritation that causes tear overflow and a burning sensation in the throat. Long-term exposure to formaldehyde can cause contact dermatitis, congenital defects, and cancer. This

The final discharge: Quantifying contaminants in embalming process effluents discharged to sewers in ontario, Canada.

The process of embalming human remains as part of the funeral home industry, entails replacing blood with embalming fluid. Typically the unused/excess fluids are disposed of directly to the sewershed or septic system. The presence of select contaminants in sewer discharges from 8 funeral homes (facilities) in York Region, Ontario during active embalming processes was studied. A wide range of contaminants including embalming fluids (formaldehyde and triclosan); metals, conventional parameters, persistent organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, and polychlorinated byphe

Predicting the combined effects of case isolation, safe funeral practices, and contact tracing during Ebola virus disease outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: The recent outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Uganda and the Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Ghana reflect a persisting threat of Filoviridae to the global health community. Characteristic of Filoviridae are not just their high case fatality rates, but also that corpses are highly contagious and prone to cause infections in the absence of appropriate precautions. Vaccines against the most virulent Ebolavirus species, the Zaire ebolavirus (ZEBOV) are approved. However, there exists no approved vaccine or treatment against the Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV) which causes the current ou

Three days for weeping: dreams, emotions, and death in the Peruvian Amazon.

Funeral customs and beliefs about the dead among the Matsigenka of Peru reflect great anxiety over the contagion of death and the power of the dead over the living. In this article, these beliefs and practices are interpreted in light of a native theory about emotion. For the Matsigenka, excessive displays of emotion, especially grief, anger, and aggressive sexuality, cause a vicious cycle of unhappiness, social disruption, illness, and death. Moving beyond a culturally particular, symbolic-interpretive perspective, the author also draws on personal experiences both in the field and at home to

The necessity of strengthening the cooperation between tissue banks and organ transplant organizations at national, regional, and international levels.

The donation of tissues and organs increases significantly when tissue banks and organ transplant organizations work together in the procurement of organs and tissues at donor sources (hospitals, coroners system, organ procurement agencies, and funeral homes, among others). To achieve this important goal, national competent health authorities should considered the establishment of a mechanism that promote the widest possible cooperation between tissue banks and organ transplant organizations with hospitals, research medical institutions, universities, and other medical institutions and facilit

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Related to Ebola Virus Disease at the End of a National Epidemic - Guinea, August 2015.

Health communication and social mobilization efforts to improve the public's knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding Ebola virus disease (Ebola) were important in controlling the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in Guinea (1), which resulted in 3,814 reported Ebola cases and 2,544 deaths.* Most Ebola cases in Guinea resulted from the washing and touching of persons and corpses infected with Ebola without adequate infection control precautions at home, at funerals, and in health facilities (2,3). As the 18-month epidemic waned in August 2015, Ebola KAP were assessed in a survey among reside

Measurement of nanoparticle exposure in crematoriums and estimation of respiratory deposition of the nanoparticles by number and size distribution.

OBJECTIVES: Nanoparticles (NPs), including hazardous substances, are generated in crematoriums due to the high temperatures during the combustion process. NPs are reported to greatly impact animals' health by reaching the alveoli and being carried to the entire body through the blood stream. However, studies in crematoriums have yet to assess workers' exposure to the generated NPs. The purpose of this study is to assess workers' exposure to NPs released in crematoriums. METHODS: Field surveys were conducted in three crematoriums with an emphasis on cremation, bone rearrangement and cleaning p

Caring for Patients With Injection Drug Use-Associated Infective Endocarditis at the End of Life: A Modified Photo-Elicitation Phenomenological Study.

Admissions for patients with injection drug use-associated infective endocarditis are increasing. Injection drug use-associated infective endocarditis is a serious and often fatal cardiac infection. Nurses are often frustrated when caring for these patients because these care assignments are physically and emotionally demanding. Nurses feel helpless, as they disposition young patients to a funeral homes, morgue, or hospice, or send them home to die, and yet a dearth of information regarding end-of-life care for injection drug use-associated infective endocarditis patients remains. This study e
