Similar to the term algae, the term fungi does not refer to a monophyletic group, but instead refers to a polyphyletic group with shared traits that evolved due to ecological niche similarity. As such, fungi are eukaryotic organisms that generally take up nutrients from their surrounding environment by absorbing and transporting them into the cell for further use. This sets them apart from animals and protozoans, which take food up into their bodies for digestion, and from autotrophic plants and protists, which produce complex carbohydrates by absorbing and reducing carbon dioxide. However, so

Electrical activity of fungus Pleurotus ostreatus is characterised by slow (h) irregular waves of baseline potential drift and fast (min) action potential likes spikes of the electrical potential. An exposure of the myceliated substrate to a chloroform vapour lead to several fold decrease of the baseline potential waves and increase of their duration. The chloroform vapour also causes either complete cessation of spiking activity or substantial reduction of the spiking frequency. Removal of the chloroform vapour from the growth containers leads to a gradual restoration of the mycelium electric

Particularly in the area of hematology/oncology and intensive care medicine, infections due to resistant fungi are to be expected. Emergence of resistance in fungi is a less dynamic process than in bacteria; it can, however, have an equally important impact on treatment strategies. In the following article, the most important resistance patterns of yeasts and molds (Candida albicans , Aspergillus fumigatus, the order Mucorales and the genus Fusarium) will be presented and discussed. Their diagnosis mostly being based on blood cultures, resistance testing for yeasts is usually readily available

Dematiaceous fungi are responsible for a wide variety of infectious syndromes. They are often found in soil and generally distributed worldwide. This suggests that most if not all individuals are exposed to them, presumably from inhalation or trauma. In recent years, these fungi have been increasingly recognised as important pathogens. The spectrum of diseases they are associated with has also broadened and includes superficial and deep local infections, allergic disease, pneumonia, brain abscess and disseminated infection. For some infections in immunocompetent individuals, such as allergic f

Herbivores consume large quantities of cellulose and other plant cell wall (fibre) carbohydrates yet generally lack the enzymes to digest them. This has led to the evolution of specialized portions of the gut, such as the rumen and caecum, which contain large populations of digestive anaerobic microorganisms. Diverse bacteria and protists from this environment have been studied for over a hundred years but it is only recently that a significant population of highly specialized flagellate fungi have been identified. These fungi are important in fibre digestion. Their diversity, properties, acti

AIM: The aim of this work was to assessment the role of mould fungi and the allergy on fungi in chronic rhinosinusitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 30 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with or without polyposis who underwent endoscopic nose and sinuses procedures. Clinical and immunological workup was performed for atopy in all patients. We performed CT of the sinuses, skin-prick testing on 15 fungal allergens, total IgE and fungal-specific IgE levels, eosinophilia level. Specimens were sent for mycology and histopathologic analysis for identification of fungi.
RESULTS: Fungal cultur

The growing concern over the harmful effects of synthetic colorants on both the consumer and the environment has raised a strong interest in natural coloring alternatives. As a result the worldwide demand for colorants of natural origin is rapidly increasing in the food, cosmetic and textile sectors. Natural colorants have the capacity to be used for a variety of industrial applications, for instance, as dyes for textile and non-textile substrates such as leather, paper, within paints and coatings, in cosmetics, and in food additives. Currently, pigments and colorants produced through plants a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Production of melanin has been associated with virulence in diverse microorganisms. Melanization of fungi has been noted for many years in predominantly subcutaneous infections such as chromoblastomycosis and more recently most extensively studied in a yeast causing systemic infection, Cryptococcus neoformans. Pigmented fungi are increasingly important human pathogens and currently available antifungals are often sub-optimal for serious infections. This review focuses on recent publications on melanin in fungi with particular reference to the role of melanin in virulence, pr

Most studies on the human gut microbiome have focused on the bacterial fraction rather than fungal biomics, which as resulted in an incomplete understanding of the fungal microbiome. Recent advances in microbiota detection and next-generation sequencing technology have boosted an increase in research on fungi. Symbiotic fungi have become increasingly influential in health and disease and modulate various physiologic functions within the host. Fungal infections can result in high morbidity and mortality rates and are life-threatening in some immunocompromised patients. In addition to bacterial

Light is essential for life as it provides the energy for the growth of plants and photosynthetic microorganisms. Plants use the energy from light to fix carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, and their photosynthetic apparatus includes sensory systems that optimize light detection. For example, light is a signal that regulates plant growth and promotes the development and orientation of leaves so that they can optimize the capture of the light energy for photosynthesis. Light is also an environmental signal that is used by non-photosynthetic organisms for their orientation, to obtain food and cap

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections of the central nervous system (FIs-CNS) have become significantly more common over the past 2 decades. Invasion of the CNS largely depends on the immune status of the host and the virulence of the fungal strain. Infections with fungi cause a significant morbidity in immunocompromised hosts, and the involvement of the CNS may lead to fatal consequences.
METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five articles on fungal neuroinfection in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases were selected for review using the following search words: "fungi and CNS mycoses", CNS funga

Fungi must meet four criteria to infect humans: growth at human body temperatures, circumvention or penetration of surface barriers, lysis and absorption of tissue, and resistance to immune defenses, including elevated body temperatures. Morphogenesis between small round, detachable cells and long, connected cells is the mechanism by which fungi solve problems of locomotion around or through host barriers. Secretion of lytic enzymes, and uptake systems for the released nutrients, are necessary if a fungus is to nutritionally utilize human tissue. Last, the potent human immune system evolved in

Among fungal toxins causing organ damage in the human body, amatoxins and orellanine remain exceptional. Amatoxins, a group of bicyclic octapeptides occurring in some Amanita, Galerina and Lepiota species, induce deficient protein synthesis resulting in cell death, but might also exert toxicity through inducing apoptosis. Target organs are intestinal mucosa, liver and kidneys. Poisoning will result in dehydration and electrolyte derangement, liver necrosis and possibly kidney damage. In established poisoning the mainstay of treatment is optimum symptomatic and supportive care. No specific trea

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, itching, inflammatory skin disease which is associated with asthma and/or hay fever and a familial occurrence of these conditions. Genetic factors are important in the development of AD, but the exact hereditary pathway is still unknown. Dry skin and the weakened barrier function in patients with AD is very important for the patient's reactions to irritants and other external trigger factors including microorganisms. The standard treatments are topical corticosteroids, topical immunomodulating agents, and emollients. If AD cannot be controlled by this type

Since many years so-called pathogenicity or virulence factors of pathogenic bacteria have been studied intensively. Whereas these factors are produced especially by obligate but also facultative pathogenic bacteria, their presence and function in pathogenic fungi is still a matter of debate. In this minireview we summarize some data about possible pathogenicity factors of Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans. The production of adhesins, proteases and capsules contributes to the virulence of these fungi. As fungal infections usually affect immunocompromised patien

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection of immunosuppressed patients. We describe here 5 cases of mucormycosis: three with facial and eye involvement, one with lung involvement and one affecting skin and joints. All five patients had underlying diseases: diabetes, leukemia, lymphoma, neoplasia and AIDS. Four patients were treated with amphotericin B and also with surgical debridement. Infection could be controlled only in two patients. Both survived but with major sequelae. In two additional patients, death was directly related to the infection and the remaining patient was lost

As most of the pathogenic fungi, opportunistic fungi have a saprophytic life in the soil. The knowledge of their life in natural conditions may allow to avoid their proliferation in the vicinity of man. Examples of ecology were taken among Aspergilli and mycetoma-inducing fungi. The ecology of these fungi was studied in Senegal-Mauritania where mycetoma is fairly frequent and well studied. Cultures of L. senegalensis and L. tompkinsii were very often isolated from dry thorns of acacias or other thorn trees. M. mycetomi, the most frequent mycetoma-inducing fungus, was very difficult to culture
