Serum chemistry and antibodies against pathogens in antarctic fur seals, Weddell seals, crabeater seals, and Ross seals.

Information on health parameters, such as antibody prevalences and serum chemistry that can reveal exposure to pathogens, disease, and abnormal physiologic conditions, is scarce for Antarctic seal species. Serum samples from Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella, n=88) from Bouvetøya (2000-2001 and 2001-2002), and from Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii, n=20), Ross seals (Ommatophoca rossii, n=20), and crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophagus, n=9) from the pack-ice off Queen Maud Land, Antarctica (2001) were analyzed for enzyme activity, and concentrations of protein, metabolites, min

Epizootiology of Brucella infection in Australian fur seals.

Novel members of the bacterial genus Brucella have recently emerged as pathogens of various marine mammal species and as potential zoonotic agents. We investigated the epizootiology of Brucella infection in Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) by establishing demographic and temporal variations in antibody prevalence, attempting isolation of the causative agent, and determining whether this potential pathogen is involved in frequent abortions observed in this pinniped species. Two competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (cELISAs), an indirect ELISA, and a fluorescence

Population Genetics and Phylogeography of Galapagos Fur Seals.

Pinnipeds found across islands provide an ideal opportunity to examine the evolutionary process of population subdivision affected by several mechanisms. Here, we report the genetic consequences of the geographic distribution of rookeries in Galapagos fur seals (GFS: Arctocephalus galapagoensis) in creating population structure. We show that rookeries across four islands (nine rookeries) are genetically structured into the following major groups: 1) a western cluster of individuals from Fernandina; 2) a central group from north and east Isabela, Santiago, and Pinta; and possibly, 3) a third cl

Naturally-occurring leptospirosis in northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus).

A 4-year study of Northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) leptospirosis in the Bering Sea has shown that in newborn pups Leptospira pomona is associated with a multiple hemorrhage syndrome. Adults may develop an interstitial nephritis and shed organisms in the urine. The hed prevalence, based on microscopic slide agglutination tests, ranged between 7.0% and 15.4% for adult females and 3-4 year old bachelor bulls, whereas nursing pups averaging 4 months of age had a prevalence of 2%. These results are used to conclude that leptospirosis is not acquired primarily on the breeding rookeries but ra

Emergence of Rabies in Cape Fur Seals, South Africa.

Rabies was diagnosed in Cape fur seals by using direct fluorescent antibody testing in South Africa, 2024. We investigated the origin of rabies virus in this species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed virus introduction from jackals into seals, followed by sustained viral transmission within the seal population and spillover into a domestic dog.

Myeloid and histiocytic sarcomas in subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis, Brazil.

Histopathological and immunohistochemical methods were used to diagnose round cell tumors in 2 subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis with marked anemia. Although wild-born, both individuals were placed under human care while juveniles in a Brazilian aquarium. Both pinnipeds were PCR tested for herpesvirus, and 1 was infected with otariid gammaherpesvirus 5 (OtHV-5), previously described in a subantarctic fur seal stranded in Brazil. Although some gammaherpesviruses can cause sarcomas and other neoplasms, it was not possible to definitively associate OtHV-5 with the neoplasm. To our k

Biological and Physical Environmental Drivers of Diet Variation in Northern Fur Seals.

The eastern Bering is a productive high-latitude ecosystem characterized by high interannual variability in physical environmental conditions that impact biological communities. We investigated how the diet composition of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) breeding on the Pribilof Islands was influenced by this variation, focusing on water temperatures (surface and bottom) and an index of walleye pollock abundance within foraging areas. We also explored whether interannual variation in diet composition influenced fur seal pup mortality rates or body mass. The frequency of occurrence (FO)

Coxiella burnetii in northern fur seals and Steller sea lions of Alaska.

Coxiella burnetii, a zoonotic bacterium, has recently been identified in several marine mammal species on the Pacific Coast of North America, but little is known about the epidemiology, transmission, and pathogenesis in these species. We tested sera archived from northern fur seals (NFS, Callorhinus ursinus; n=236) and Steller sea lions (SSL, Eumetopias jubatus; n=72) sampled in Alaska for C. burnetii antibodies, and vaginal swabs from NFS (n=40) for C. burnetii by qPCR. The antibody prevalence in NFS samples from 2009 and 2011 (69%) was significantly higher than in 1994 (49%). The antibody pr

Mechanisms of deaths in captive juvenile New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri).

Juvenile seals are sometimes encountered in waters around South Australia with injuries and/or diseases that require veterinary treatment. Two cases are reported where apparently stable animals died soon after being rescued due to quite disparate conditions. In Case 1 a juvenile male New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) was found unexpectedly dead in its enclosure. A necropsy examination revealed an emaciated juvenile male with no injuries. The intestine was filled throughout its length with melena stool that was due to heavy infestation of the stomach with roundworms with adjacent ga

Maternal-Pup Mercury Relationship in South American Sea Lions and Fur Seals.

Mercury (Hg) is a non-essential, globally distributed toxic metal that bioaccumulates in aquatic organisms and biomagnifies across trophic levels, posing a threat to top predators such as marine mammals. Our aim was to evaluate total mercury (THg) relationships in mother-pup pairs of two pinniped species, South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) and South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis), from Isla de Lobos, Uruguay. We quantified THg in maternal hair and pup lanugo from 11 O. flavescens and 46 A. australis mother-pup pairs. THg concentrations were significantly higher in O. fl

Habitat selection and influence on hunting success in female Australian fur seals.

Determining the factors influencing habitat selection and hunting success in top predators is crucial for understanding how these species may respond to environmental changes. For marine top predators, such factors have been documented in pelagic foragers, with habitat use and hunting success being linked to chlorophyll-a concentrations, sea surface temperature and light conditions. In contrast, little is known about the determinants of benthic marine predators. The Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) is a benthic-diving forager that has a breeding and foraging distribution

Fur Seals Suppress REM Sleep for Very Long Periods without Subsequent Rebound.

Virtually all land mammals and birds have two sleep states: slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep [1, 2]. After deprivation of REM sleep by repeated awakenings, mammals increase REM sleep time [3], supporting the idea that REM sleep is homeostatically regulated. Some evidence suggests that periods of REM sleep deprivation for a week or more cause physiological dysfunction and eventual death [4, 5]. However, separating the effects of REM sleep loss from the stress of repeated awakening is difficult [2, 6]. The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is a semiaquatic mammal [7

Mass mortality of adult male subantarctic fur seals: are alien mice the culprits?

BACKGROUND: Mass mortalities of marine mammals due to infectious agents are increasingly reported. However, in contrast to previous die-offs, which were indiscriminate with respect to sex and age, here we report a land-based mass mortality of Subantarctic fur seals with apparent exclusivity to adult males. An infectious agent with a male-predilection is the most plausible explanation for this die-off. Although pathogens with gender-biased transmission and pathologies are unusual, rodents are known sources of male-biased infectious agents and the invasive Mus musculus house mouse, occurs in sea

Aquatic and terrestrial heart rates in fur seals: evidence for delayed metabolic processing.

A seal's heart rate is affected by their physiological adaptation to aquatic and terrestrial environments. At-sea, heart rate during dive bouts cycles between bradycardia during dives and tachycardia for oxygen replenishment on the sea-surface. While onshore, heart rate reflects apnoea and eupnoea. Intriguingly, complete sea-and-onshore heart rate traces and any relationship between sea and subsequent onshore heart rate, including any immediate or delayed physiological adaptation, remain unexamined. In this study, sea-and-onshore heart rate traces from female Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusi

Subcutaneous merocercoids of Clistobothrium sp. in two Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus).

Fur seals represent intermediate hosts of the cestode Clistobothrium. Large sharks are definitive hosts for these parasites. Two female, 25- and 27-year-old fur seals, caught in the 1980s at the South African coast, were examined pathomorphologically. Both animals showed multifocal, up to 1 cm in diameter large cavities of the thoracic and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue containing intraluminal metacestodes of tapeworms, which were surrounded by a locally extensive, pyogranulomatous panniculitis. The metacestodes (merocercoids) of one fur seal were isolated from the subcutaneous adipose

Activity Budgets of Captive Cape Fur Seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) Under a Training Regime.

Ethograms and time budgets are crucial for the behavioral assessment of nonhuman animals in zoos, and they serve as references for welfare research. This study was conducted to obtain detailed time budgets of trained Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) in captivity, to evaluate variations of these patterns, and to determine whether abnormal behaviors had been displayed. Behavioral data for 3 Cape fur seals in the Wroclaw Zoo were collected, and more than 300 observation hours (during a 12-month period) per individual were analyzed. The studied animals exhibited a diversified repertoire of

Molecular Detection of Circovirus and Adenovirus in Feces of Fur Seals (Arctocephalus spp.).

In some regions, little is known about exposure to viruses in coastal marine mammals. The present study aimed to detect viral RNA or DNA in 23 free-ranging fur seals on the northern coastline of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect nucleic acids of circoviruses, adenoviruses, morbilliviruses, vesiviruses, and coronaviruses in the feces from twenty-one South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) and two Subantarctic fur seals (A. tropicalis). Adenovirus DNA fragments were detected in two South American fur seals; nucleotide sequences of these frag
