[Botryomycosis caused by fusobacteria].

In the Anglo-American literature botrymycosis is described as a chronic cutaneous granulomatous reaction to bacterial infection, containing granules resembling the sulphur granules seen in actinomycosis. The diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are discussed with reference to a recently observed patient. Fusobacterium nucleatum was isolated as the bacterial cause of the pathologic disorder.

Clinicopathologic considerations of fusobacteria chorioamnionitis.

When sought by light microscopy in formalin-fixed tissue, fusobacteria are apparent in 7-18% of chorioamnionitis cases. Brown and Hopps bacterial staining characteristically visualizes their long, slender and filamentous forms. Fusobacteria-like organisms in placentae have previously been associated with prematurity. Our findings indicate that perinatal infection with fusobacteria may cause neonatal death from prematurity, rather than from sepsis. In a study of 586 placentae, 14 specimens with chorioamnionitis and fusobacteria-like organisms were found. On the five occasions when microbiologic

[Sepsis due to fusobacteria in a young adult].

Fusobacteria belong to the normal population of the pharyngeal mucosa as well as the mucosa of the upper airways and the gastrointestinal tract. Infections are comparatively rare. The most common causative organism is Fusobacterium necrophorum. A well-known infection caused by this germ is Lemierre's syndrome. In the presented case, a 19-year-old man (123 kg body weight, 186 cm body length) was found dead in his bed in the morning after having complained of muscular fatigue and vomiting the previous day. Autopsy was carried out only two days after death. At that time, the body showed marked pu

Severe Fusobacteria infections (Lemierre syndrome) in two boys.

UNLABELLED: Abscess formation is a rare cause of febrile illness in childhood but always has to be considered in such clinical presentations. Belonging to the resident flora of the oropharyngeal region, Fusobacteria are known to cause local infections; from here they may extend to other sites via the bloodstream or are aspirated into the lung (Lemierre disease). We report on two boys with Lemierre disease due to infection by Fusobacteria in monoculture causing two different clinical phenotypes. Case 1 presented with a large subphrenic abscess and pneumonic infiltration of the right middle lobe

Acute Appendicitis in Children Is Associated With a Local Expansion of Fusobacteria.

BACKGROUND: Lumenal obstruction has typically been regarded as the cause of acute appendicitis (AA). Recent evidence including data from "antibiotics first" trials suggests that this disease may result from invasion of the appendix by specific pathogens. Small studies have identified an abundance of bacteria from the genus Fusobacterium in appendixes from patients with AA. We aimed to validate these findings in a larger cohort of children with appendicitis in addition to profiling the appendiceal microbiota in a population of children without appendicitis. METHODS: Appendix swabs were collect

Halitosis vaccines targeting FomA, a biofilm-bridging protein of fusobacteria nucleatum.

Halitosis (bad breath) is estimated to influence more than half of the world's population with varying degree of intensity. More than 85% of halitosis originates from oral bacterial infections. Foul-smelling breath mainly results from bacterial production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. To date, major treatments for elimination of oral malodor include periodontal therapy combined with antibiotics or antimicrobial agents, and mechanical approaches including tooth and tongue cleaning. These treatments may transiently reduce VSCs but carry risks

Cellular fatty acid and soluble protein profiles of oral fusobacteria.

We compared the cellular fatty acid and protein content of 43 strains of oral fusobacteria isolated from patients with chronic gingivitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, and juvenile and adult periodontitis, as well as from the stump-tailed macaque, to that of eight reference strains of oral and non-oral Fusobacterium species. A gas-liquid chromatographic examination of trimethylsilyl derivatives of the fatty acid methyl esters revealed n14:0, 3-OH-14:0, n16:0, 16:1, 3-OH-16:0, n18:0, and 18:1 in each of the 51 study strains, and a variable occurrence of 14 other fatty acids. The stimulatory effect of fusobacteria on dendritic cells under aerobic or anaerobic conditions.

Fusobacteria have been suspected to be pathobionts of colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. However, the immunomodulatory properties that affect these inflammatory reactions in dendritic cells (DCs) under anaerobic and aerobic conditions have not yet been characterized. We directly assessed the stimulatory effects of anaerobic commensal bacteria, including fusobacteria, on a human DC line through coculture under aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, stimulation of the DC line with all live commensal bacteria examined, except the probiotic Lactobacillus

Acute appendicitis in children is associated with an abundance of bacteria from the phylum Fusobacteria.

BACKGROUND: Although luminal obstruction has traditionally been viewed as the underlying cause of appendicitis, recent evidence has suggested that the disease may result directly from invasion by specific pathogens, e.g. Fusobacterium nucleatum. The purpose of this study was to survey microbial communities within pediatric appendectomy specimens using a culture-independent approach. METHODS: We performed 16S ribosomal gene sequence analysis to profile the microbiota present within luminal fluid obtained from 22 pediatric appendectomy specimens. These included 10 simple appendicitis cases, 5 p

Three cases of perioral dermatitis related to fusobacteria treated with β-lactam antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: The oral tetracyclines, especially minocycline hydrochloride, are often used as an effective treatment for perioral dermatitis; however, they are sometimes difficult to use, especially in children, because of the side effects. OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of β-lactam antibiotics was evaluated in three cases of perioral dermatitis. METHODS: Three Japanese patients with perioral dermatitis were treated with cefcapene pivoxil hydrochloride hydrate per os 100-300 mg/day. They were one girl (aged 10 years) and two adult women (aged 32 and 37 years respectively). One of the adult patie

Gut Microbiota Alteration is Characterized by a Proteobacteria and Fusobacteria Bloom in Kwashiorkor and a Bacteroidetes Paucity in Marasmus.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Kwashiorkor and marasmus are considered to be two different clinical diseases resulting from severe malnutrition, but this distinction has been questioned. In a previous study comparing children with kwashiorkor and healthy children from Niger and Senegal, we found a dramatic gut microbiota alteration with a predominant depletion of anaerobes and enrichment in Proteobacteria and Fusobacteria in kwashiorkor. However, it remained unknown whether this association was related to malnutrition or was a specific feature of kwashiorkor. In this continuation study, we added 7 new marasmus subjects and

Antibody Responses to 11 Fusobacterium Proteins and Colorectal Cancer-Specific and Overall Survival in the EPIC Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Although there is evidence that Fusobacterium spp. in colon tissue is associated with prognosis, less is known about the association between antibody response to antigens expressed by fusobacteria and colorectal cancer-specific mortality. METHODS: Antibody responses to 11 Fusobacterium nucleatum (ATCC 25586) antigens were measured in prediagnostic blood for 471 incident colorectal cancer cases (median time to diagnosis = 3.4 years), among whom 188 colorectal cancer-specific deaths and 250 total deaths were confirmed over a median follow-up of 9.2 years in the European Prospective

[Etiology of perioral dermatitis].

The studies of Röckl und Schubert supported the theory that fusobacteria are often found in perioral dermatitis. When we characterize perioral dermatitis as fusobacteriosis, we do not have any doubt that fluorinated corticosteroids represent a very important pathogenetic factor. Corticoids enable opportune fusobacteria to become pathogenic. In our opinion without these bacteria the beginning of the perioral dermatitis seems impossible. Other supporting causes, which are relevant to sex distribution (oral contraceptives, moisturizing creams) are described.

Isolation and Characterization of Fusobacterium nucleatum Subspecies from Oral Clinical Specimens.

The identification and quantification of Fusobacterium nucleatum subspecies is of paramount importance to researchers investigating fusobacterial composition in clinical specimens of human health and disease. Here, we present two validated methods to identify and/or quantify oral fusobacteria present within clinical specimens. Importantly, both approaches can unambiguously distinguish the four F. nucleatum subspecies and Fusobacterium periodonticum. The first method is a convenient PCR-based approach used for rapid genotyping of individual fusobacterial colonies and mixed cultures. The second

Dynamics of the microbiota found in the vaginas of dairy cows during the transition period: Associations with uterine diseases and reproductive outcome.

We investigated the microbiota found in the vaginas of Holstein dairy cows during the transition period and described the differences in bacterial composition and total bacterial load (TBL) associated with disease and fertility. Vaginal swabs were collected at -7, 0, 3, and 7 d relative to parturition from 111 dairy cows housed on a commercial dairy farm near Ithaca, New York. Microbiota were characterized by next-generation DNA sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene, and TBL was determined by real-time quantitative PCR. We applied repeated-measures ANOVA to evaluate the associations of ute
