Human infections with Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacillus that can be a primary pathogen causing either localised abscesses and throat infections or systemic life-threatening disease. Systemic infections due to F. necrophorum are referred to as either Lemierre's disease/syndrome, post-anginal sepsis or necrobacillosis, but in the context of this mini-review, all are included under the umbrella term of 'invasive F. necrophorum disease' (IFND). Although IFND has been well documented for over a century, it is quite a rare condition and modern-day clinicians of various medical disciplines ar

Fusobacterium necrophorum oral infections - A need for guidance.

F. necrophorum, a gram-negative obligate anaerobe, causes pharyngotonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess and the Lemierre Syndrome as well as other significant infections. Clinical information on this bacterium has increased dramatically over the past 20 years, yet no standard guidance exists for treating these infections. While data support F. necrophorum as a cause of pharyngotonsillitis, no consensus exists on the clinical importance of these findings especially in the 15-30 age group. Similarly, recent data find this bacterium the most frequent and most likely to recur in peritonsillar abscess

Clonality of Fusobacterium nucleatum in root canal infections.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a gram-negative non-spore-forming, non-motile, obligate anaerobic rod that is normally isolated from the oral cavity. Several studies have reported a significant heterogeneity within the F. nucleatum species. The aim of the present study was to analyze the clonal diversity of F. nucleatum strains isolated from intracanal infections and to evaluate the presence of Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC)-like sequences in the genome of F. nucleatum. Samples were collected from 13 single-root teeth from adult patients, all having carious lesions, necrotic

Fusobacterium necrophorum infections in England and Wales 1990-2000.

In response to a marked increase in both the number of Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteraemia reports to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre and the number of F. necrophorum isolates referred to the PHLS Anaerobe Reference Unit in 1999, the data from both sources on F. necrophorum infections were reviewed for the decade 1990-2000. There were 208 reports of F. necrophorum bacteraemia (average 19/year; range 14-34/year) with a peak in incidence in the late winter months; 68% were from male patients and the peak age range was 16-23 years. Of 205 referred isolates of F. necrophorum, 1

Pulmonary and thoracic infection by Fusobacterium nucleatum.

INTRODUCTION: Fusobacterium nucleatum is an anaerobic bacillus that is part of the oral microbiota and dental pla que. This can cause local and potentially remote infections, which are exceptional in pediatrics. Ob jective: To present the case of a patient with lung injury with chest wall invasion by Fusobacterium nucleatum. CLINICAL CASE: An 11-year-old female immunocompetent patient who consulted due to a two-week history of cough, night sweats, without fever or weight loss, and increased volume at the left spleen thoracic level. There was no history of chest wall trauma or travel outside t

Localised Fusobacterium necrophorum infections: a prospective laboratory-based Danish study.

During a 3-year prospective laboratory-based study in Denmark from 1998 to 2001, all patients who were diagnosed with localised Fusobacterium necrophorum infections were registered with the purpose of describing the variety of localised infections caused by F. necrophorum, especially in the head. We found 267 patients, most of them previously healthy, with localised F. necrophorum infections in the head and neck. In children, F. necrophorum caused otitis media and solitary abscess formation in cervical lymphadenitis. In adolescents, F. necrophorum was found in 21% of peritonsillar abscesses. W

Vaccine Design against Fusobacterium nucleatum FadA Protein in Periodontal Infections.

Objectives: A common inflammatory condition affecting oral health is periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss if not treated early, as it destroys the supporting structures of the teeth. Fusobacterium nucleatum is an orange-pigmented bacterium commonly referred to as "the bridging species" between early and late colonizers in the oral microbiota, and it is associated with the progression of periodontal disease. This study aimed to develop an effective and precise multi-epitope vaccine against F. nucleatum, as there is currently no approved vaccine for periodontal disease. Materials and Meth

Fusobacterium nucleatum infections: clinical spectrum and bacteriological features of 78 cases.

PURPOSE: Few series describe the clinical spectrum of Fusobacterium spp. infections. Among them, fewer discuss F. nucleatum, even though there are many clinical cases. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study over 8 years (from 2007 to 2014) in Limoges University Hospital, France, to assess clinical and bacteriological aspects of infections due to F. nucleatum. RESULTS: Eighty-one patients with F. nucleatum positive cultures were included in this study, irrespective of sample origin. Abscesses (n = 43), bacteraemia (n = 18) and bone infections (n = 8) were the most common types of infecti

Infective Endocarditis by Fusobacterium Species-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium species are anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli that are part of the normal oropharyngeal and gastrointestinal flora. Although rare, they can cause infective endocarditis (IE), a severe condition with high morbidity. The clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and outcomes of IE caused by Fusobacterium spp. remain incompletely defined. This systematic review aimed to synthesize available data on Fusobacterium IE and compare its features with IE caused by other pathogens. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Libr

Left Atrial Myxoma Infected With Fusobacterium Nucleatum.

Cardiac myxomas are the most common primary cardiac tumours in adults. Clinical presentation is variable, with few cases of infected myxomas reported in the literature. We describe a rare case of a 63-year-old patient who presented with splenic abscesses and a left atrial mass suggestive of emboligen myxoma. The patient underwent a successful emergency sur- gical excision of the atrial mass followed by splenectomy. Blood cultures were positive for Fusobacterium nucleatum, whereas the histopathological examination of the excised mass confirmed the presence of a myxoma with a marked inflammatory

Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia following oropharyngeal infection.

Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia developed in five patients after an oropharyngeal infection. Four patients had sore throat or neck pain, and two had findings of jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis. Metastatic abscesses, including embolic pneumonia, empyema, septic arthritis, and osteomyelitis, also occurred. Four patients recovered and one died. Proper treatment requires recognition of the oropharyngeal source of the septicemia and its differentiation from endocarditis. Antibiotic therapy should be prolonged, and metastatic abscesses drained.

Fusobacterium necrophorum associated with pelvic infections: A case series and literature review.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a gram-negative anaerobic bacillus most commonly implicated in oropharyngeal infections and their subsequent complications, including septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, or Lemierre syndrome. However, limited case reports document evidence of pelvic infections associated with Fusobacterium as well, such as pelvic peritonitis and pelvic septic vein thrombophlebitis. In this case series, we discuss two occurrences of Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia from a presumed gynecologic source and present a literature review of other reported cases of Fus

Clinical spectrum of bacteraemic Fusobacterium infections: from septic shock to nosocomial bacteraemia.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium species are anaerobic bacteria that relatively rarely cause sepsis with a variable clinical presentation. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 52 consecutive patients who had Fusobacterium bacteraemia over a 10-y period. RESULTS: The clinical pictures could be classified into 4 groups: (1) patients who had Lemierre's syndrome with Fusobacterium necrophorum sepsis and internal jugular vein thrombosis, n = 5 (10%); (2) previously healthy patients who had F. necrophorum sepsis without any signs of macroscopic vascular thrombosis (but 5 of them had abscesses), n = 14 (27

[Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges of Otogenic Fusobacterium Necrophorum Infections: A Case Report].

Acute mastoiditis is an infectious complication of acute otitis media, potentially leading to life-threatening extracranial and intracranial sequelae. In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the epidemiology of causative pathogens, with an increasing incidence of less common bacteria. This article presents the case of a 1.5-year-old child diagnosed with acute mastoiditis and additional complications, who failed to respond to empirical antibiotic therapy and had persistently negative cultures. Only through the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing was the causative organi

Species-specific clinical differences in Fusobacterium infections: association with malignancy and prognosis.

We retrospectively analyzed 300 Fusobacterium infections over 10 years. F. necrophorum caused head and neck infections in younger patients, whereas F. nucleatum was isolated from multiple anatomical sites. F. varium and F. mortiferum were associated with intra-abdominal malignancy, and F. mortiferum showed higher bacteremia rates and poorer prognosis.

Epidemiology and Clinical Outcomes of Fusobacterium Infections: A Six-Year Retrospective Study.

Background and Objectives: Anaerobic bacteria like Fusobacterium can lead to severe and life-threatening infections. The inherent complexities in the isolation of these bacteria may result in diagnostic and therapeutic delays, thereby escalating both morbidity and mortality rates. We aimed to examine data from patients with infections due to Fusobacterium to gain insights into the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of patients with these infections.
