A case of meningitis secondary to acute suppurative otitis media in a previously healthy child is reported. The only organism isolated from blood after aerobic and prolonged anaerobic culture was identified as Fusobacterium necrophorum. Complete recovery followed treatment with surgery and prolonged antibiotic therapy. The role of anaerobes in the development of meningitis, the isolation and identification of Fusobacterium necrophorum, the clinical presentations of F. necrophorum infection and the choice of antibiotics in the treatment of these infections are discussed.

Liver abscesses are of major economic importance to the cattle industry. These are mainly associated with the presence of Fusobacterium necrophorum, a non-spore forming and Gram-negative anaerobe. There are two main subspecies, F. necrophorum subspecies necrophorum and subsp. funduliforme, and they differ molecularly, morphologically, biochemically and in virulence. Previous studies have shown that the outer membrane proteins (OMP) of F. necrophorum subsp. necrophorum are important for its successful binding to immobilized bovine adrenal gland capillary endothelial (EJG) cells. In this study,

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacillus that can be a primary pathogen causing either localised abscesses and throat infections or systemic life-threatening disease. Systemic infections due to F. necrophorum are referred to as either Lemierre's disease/syndrome, post-anginal sepsis or necrobacillosis, but in the context of this mini-review, all are included under the umbrella term of 'invasive F. necrophorum disease' (IFND). Although IFND has been well documented for over a century, it is quite a rare condition and modern-day clinicians of various medical disciplines ar

In a 9 month-old infant admitted to hospital for a fever with chilles, anaerobic blood cultures isolated Fusobacterium necrophorum. On the 5th day of intravenous treatment with amoxicillin and metronidazole clinical signs of mastoiditis, the likely source of the sepsis, became apparent. Septicemias with Fusobacterium necrophorum are usually observed in teenagers and young adults during an acute bout of tonsilitis. This type of infection is exceptional in infants and requires a careful search for a primary focus in facial cavities and in the base of the skull.

We have described the case of a 23-month-old female child in whom Fusobacterium sepsis progressed to cerebral infarction despite therapy with intravenous chloramphenicol and ampicillin. Some clinical improvement was noted upon addition of metronidazole to the treatment regimen. The child survived, but has severe neurologic sequelae. Physicians should suspect anaerobic infection in children who have signs of severe neurologic infection and in whom cultures are negative for aerobes. In selected cases, early treatment with metronidazole may be helpful.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a rare infection most notable for causing Lemierre's syndrome. This consists of a primary oropharyngeal infection and septic thrombophlebitis, and one or more metastatic focus. Prior to the widespread use of antibiotics, Lemierre's syndrome commonly followed a rapidly progressing course, with a high mortality. We describe a case of a previously well 18-month-old boy who presented to the emergency department with a 3-week history of progressive, right-sided, painful neck swelling and systemic sepsis. He was initially treated conservatively with intravenous antibioti

Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia developed in five patients after an oropharyngeal infection. Four patients had sore throat or neck pain, and two had findings of jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis. Metastatic abscesses, including embolic pneumonia, empyema, septic arthritis, and osteomyelitis, also occurred. Four patients recovered and one died. Proper treatment requires recognition of the oropharyngeal source of the septicemia and its differentiation from endocarditis. Antibiotic therapy should be prolonged, and metastatic abscesses drained.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that is the causative agent of the invasive disease Lemierre's syndrome. In addition, it is also associated with peritonsillar abscess formation and otitis media in small children. Recent research has shown that F. necrophorum may be involved in pharyngotonsillitis especially in adolescent and young adults and that it may be the second most common bacterial cause of pharyngotonsillitis after Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A streptococci). Peritonsillar abscesses and Lemierre's syndrome due to F. necrophorum are also found in this

A 19-year-old male presented to the emergency department with progressive right eye proptosis and was subsequently diagnosed with bacterial orbital cellulitis and acute on chronic allergic fungal sinusitis. He experienced brief symptomatic improvement after endoscopic sinus surgery, initiation of antibiotics, and steroid treatment; however, he re-presented five days after discharge with significantly worsened symptoms and no light perception in the right eye. Cultures resulted in Aspergillus and Fusobacterium necrophorum, a rare, aggressive etiology of bacterial orbital cellulitis. He develope

Fusobacterium necrophorum is implicated as an aetiological agent in a variety of necrotic diseases, such as Lemièrre's syndrome (LS) in humans. LS was initially described as septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein secondary to an acute oropharyngeal infection. Other primary sources of infection include parotitis, otitis media, sinusitis, odontogenic infection and mastoiditis. In the pre-antibiotic era LS carried a high mortality. This has been reduced as a result of the widespread use of antibiotics, but there is still a definite morbidity and mortality associated with infection w

Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by acute pharyngotonsillitis with secondary thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein which is complicated by multiple metastatic foci of infections. This syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum in healthy young persons and is extremely rare in occurrence. A pre-school child with Lemierre's syndrome is reported. The diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are emphasized in order to sensitize physicians to this uncommon condition.

A 23 year old woman died within six hours of admission from acute disseminated intravascular coagulation. Fusobacterium necrophorum, a Gram negative anaerobic organism, was isolated as a single pathogen from the blood cultures. This association has not previously been reported.

A 62-year-old African American man with a history of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the right hip joint presented with severe right hip pain, dyspnea, fever, tachycardia, and hypertension. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed bilateral airspace opacities with a mild tree-in-bud nodularity in the left lower lobe. Ultrasonography of the lower extremities revealed a deep venous thrombus (DVT) in the right deep veins. Blood cultures grew Fusobacterium necrophorum. CT and magnetic resonance imaging showed right hip joint destruction and septic arthritis. The patient had a complicated hospital course l

We report the case of an 18-year-old woman who was referred to our outpatient clinic because of a 2-week history of sore throat, high fever, and neck tenderness unresponsive to a 7-day amoxicillin/clavulanic acid course. Infectious mononucleosis was initially suspected, but an extremely high value of procalcitonin and clinical deterioration suggested a bacterial sepsis, prompting the patient admission to our internal medicine ward. Blood cultures were positive for Fusobacterium necrophorum. CT scan detected a parapharyngeal abscess, a right internal jugular vein thrombosis, and multiple bilate

Fusobacterium necrophorum plays a role in non-GAS-tonsillitis in adolescents and probably also in small children with recurrent otitis media. Anaerobic culture on selective anaerobic media is recommended to detect F. necrophorum and treat such patients. Denmark sees at least 20 annual cases of Lemierre's syndrome with a mortality reaching 9%. Early suspicion of Lemierre's syndrome in adolescents with non-GAS-tonsillitis, who develop septicaemia, pulmonary symptoms and unilateral swelling on the neck, is mandatory to lower morbidity and mortality.

The authors have observed a case of Fusobacterium necrophorum associate with Actinomyces odontolyticus septicemia, which appears to be the first case reported. In a 19 year old man, 15 blood cultures allowed to isolate both germs. Clinical manifestations were: acute-like abdomen, encephalitis, myocarditis and pleural effusion. Treatment with amoxicillin and metronidazole was successful.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is an important pathogen associated with several infectious diseases in cattle. However, recent sequencing-based studies reported that F. necrophorum may be positively associated with pregnancy in beef cows and that Fusobacterium is highly abundant in bull seminal microbiota with potential involvement in reproductive health and fertility. Here, we performed a comprehensive screening to (i) determine the prevalence of Fusobacterium necrophorum (subspecies necrophorum [FNN] and funduliforme [FNF]) and Fusobacterium varium (FV) in the reproductive microbiota of cattle an
