GB Virus C and Hepatitis G Virus (GBV-C/HGV) are positive, single-stranded flaviviruses. GBV-C and HGV are independent isolates of the same virus. Transmission via the blood-borne route is the commonest mode, although vertical and sexual transmission is well documented. GBV-C/HGV is distributed globally; its prevalence in the general population is 10 fold higher in African countries than in non-African countries. High prevalences of GBV-C/HGV have been found in subjects with frequent parenteral exposure and in groups at high risk of exposure to blood and blood products. The clinical significan

In 49 patients with known Ebola virus disease outcomes during the ongoing outbreak in Sierra Leone, 13 were coinfected with the immunomodulatory pegivirus GB virus C (GBV-C). Fifty-three percent of these GBV-C(+) patients survived; in contrast, only 22% of GBV-C(-) patients survived. Both survival and GBV-C status were associated with age, with older patients having lower survival rates and intermediate-age patients (21 to 45 years) having the highest rate of GBV-C infection. Understanding the separate and combined effects of GBV-C and age on Ebola virus survival may lead to new treatment and

BACKGROUND: GB virus C (GBV-C) is an apathogenic virus that inhibits human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication in vitro. Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of GBV-C has been observed in multiple small studies. Our study examined the rate and correlates of MTCT of GBV-C in a large cohort of GBV-C-HIV-coinfected pregnant women in Thailand.
METHODS: Maternal delivery plasma specimens from 245 GBV-C-HIV-infected women and specimens from their infants at 4 or 6 months of age were tested for GBV-C RNA. Associations with MTCT of GBV-C were examined using logistic regression.
RESULTS: One hund

OBJECTIVE: Changes in the deduced amino acid sequence of the envelope 2 (E2) region of the GB virus C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) were analyzed to investigate whether or not the region contributes to persistent infection with the virus.
METHODS: Eight patients with acute hepatitis C and 1 patient with acute hepatitis of unknown etiology were included in the study. GBV-C/HGV RNA was detected in 6 patients, including the patient with hepatitis of unknown origin. The nucleotide sequence of the E2 region of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and GBV-C/HGV was determined by direct sequencing of polymerase

BACKGROUND: The hepatitis G virus (HGV) or GB virus C (GBV-C) is a new member of the Flaviviridae family. The virus is transmitted by transfusion of blood, infusion of some blood products, and by parenteral exposure to blood during intravenous drug use (IVDU) and haemodialysis. Transmission from mother to infant and by sexual contact has also been documented. Although the virus has been found in patients with acute and chronic hepatitis, evidence of disease association has not been forthcoming. The majority of patients carry the virus in the absence of liver enzyme abnormalities.

Sera from 77 patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) were tested for GB virus C (GBV-C) RNA, because they are prone to unexplained chronic hepatitis, and from 28 patients with X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) who have a similar primary antibody deficiency but are not prone to hepatitis. Eight CVID and 8 XLA patients were positive; 6 positive CVID and 3 XLA patients had abnormal liver enzymes, explained in 3 by either hepatitis B or C virus infection. Most patients tested had antibodies to the E2 antigen of GBV-C, apparently passively acquired from their immunoglobulin therapy. T

The association of the newly identified viruses, GB virus C (GBV-C) and TT virus (TTV), with autoimmune hepatitis remains to be elucidated. Sera from 20 Japanese patients with autoimmune hepatitis and 50 volunteer blood donors were assayed for GBV-C RNA, antibodies to the GBV-C second envelope protein (E2), and TTV DNA. GBV-C RNA was examined by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Anti-GBV-C E2 (a marker of past infection) was tested by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. TTV DNA was amplified by PCR using two different sets of primers: one derived from the original N22 se

We previously reported that Daudi cells, a Burkitt's lymphoma cell line, were capable of supporting productive infection of hepatitis C virus (HCV). During continual cultivation after HCV infection, the culture became resistant to interferons (IFNs). This resistant cell line, coded as H-903, was used as host cells for replication of GB virus C (GBV-C), also known as hepatitis G virus. GBV-C RNA was detected in the culture by reverse transcription-PCR for more than 130 days after inoculation, while it was detected for 44 days but not later in the parental IFN-sensitive Daudi cells. Among risk groups for GB virus C (GBV-C)/HGV infection, patients with haematological diseases are particularly exposed due to the combination of transfusional support and immunodeficiency status. To examine any association between GBV-C/HGV positivity and different malignancy potential of hematological diseases, we investigated two groups of patients, one with clonal stem cell disease with long latency period (myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative disease) and one with malignant haematological diseases (Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, acute leukemia, multiple myeloma). Multiple genotypes of GB virus C (GBV-C)-a non-pathogenic flavivirus-have been identified to date, although they are not uniformly distributed worldwide. It has also been suggested that GBV-C genotype may play a role in modulating HIV disease; however, the prevalence and genotype distribution of GBV-C has not been adequately studied in most countries. Among 408 HIV positive subjects in Germany, 97 (23.8%) had detectable GBV-C RNA. Based on sequencing of the 5' untranslated region (5'-UTR), the GBV-C genotypes were 1 (n=8; 8.2%), 2 (n=81; 83.5%), and 3 (n=2; 2.1%), as well as a unique genotype

Recently, hepatitis GB virus C (HGBV-C) has been recovered from patients with non-A-E hepatitis. However, it has been unclear whether HGBV-C may be related to the development of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) or not. In this study, we determined HGBV-C RNA in sera from alcoholic patients without markers for hepatitis C and B viruses to evaluate the role of HGBV-C in ALD. Serum samples were obtained from 68 patients with ALD and 40 nonalcoholic patients with chronic type C liver disease. HGBV-C RNA was detected in only 3 of 68 (4.4%) patients with ALD, in 2 of 27 patients with hepatic fibrosis,

BACKGROUND: The increasing drug resistance and limitations of conventional anti-herpes simplex virus (HSV) drugs highlight the urgent need for safer and more effective alternatives. Caesappanin C (CAP), derived from Caesalpinia sappan L., is recognized for its diverse biological properties, but its efficacy against HSV remains unexplored.
PURPOSE: To assess CAP's anti-HSV efficacy in vitro and in vivo, and to clarify its mechanisms.
METHODS: CAP's anti-HSV activity in vitro was assessed using western blot, immunofluorescence assay and plaque assay. The anti-HSV mechanisms of CAP were investi

A survey was conducted in a blood donor population of Central Brazil aiming to investigate the prevalence of GB virus C (GBV-C)/hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection and also to analyze the virus genotypes distribution. A total of 241 voluntary blood donors were interviewed at the State Blood Bank in Goiânia, State of Goiás, Brazil. Blood samples were collected and serum samples tested for GBV-C/HGV RNA by polymerase chain reaction. Genotypes were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Seventeen samples were GBV-C/HGV RNA-positive, resulting in a prevalence of 7.1%

OBJECTIVES: The more effective way of transmission of GB virus C (GBV-C) is parenteral, but sexual and vertical transmission seem to be the main way of spreading. We evaluated the prevalence and the effect of GBV-C infection on pregnant women, vertical transmission and viral effects on the newborn.
STUDY DESIGN: This study has consecutively enrolled 879 pregnant women. All patients had blood sampling to determine GBV-C RNA, serologic tests for chronic viral infections and seric tests of hepatic damage. The newborns from infected mothers had blood sampling to detect the presence of GBV-C at bi

GB virus C (GBV-C) infection is frequent in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) due to similar transmission routes of these viruses. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of infection and genotypic characteristics of GBV-C in this population. The presence of GBV-C RNA was determined in serum samples of 106 patients infected with HIV by reverse transcriptase-nested polymerase chain reaction. GBV-C genotypes were determined by direct sequencing. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs), hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV), alani
