First description of demodicosis in 12 galagos (Galago senegalensis).

Twelve Galago senegalensis from the Moscow Zoo were presented with papular to nodular (2-11 mm) lesions on the pinnae, containing a white, waxy material. Microscopic examination revealed large numbers of mites consistent with the morphology of Demodex spp. mites. Nine animals were treated with ivermectin, 600 μg/kg/day topically, orally or subcutaneously for 3-10 months, while one remained untreated. All the treated animals achieved clinical remission. The control animal was still affected and died 11 months later due to pneumonia and possible eosinophilic leukaemia. No adverse effects were no

Interhemispheric connections in neonatal owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) and galagos (Galago crassicaudatus).

Interhemispheric connections were studied by injecting a mixture of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) into multiple sites in dorsolateral occipital and parietal cortex of one cerebral hemisphere of three galagos (Galago crassicaudatus) and two owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) within seven days of birth. Cortex was either separated from the rest of the brain, flattened and cut parallel to the surface to aid reconstructing surface-view patterns of labeled neurons and processes, or cut in standard coronal or parasagittal planes t

Developmental milestones in captive Galago moholi.

Systems of the body develop in a modular manner. For example, neural development in primates is generally rapid, whereas dental development varies much more. In the present study, we examined development of the skull, teeth, and postcrania in a highly specialized leaping primate, Galago moholi. Eighteen specimens ranging from birth to adult were studied. Bones, teeth, and the cranial cavity (i.e., endocast) were reconstructed with Amira software based on microCT cross-referenced to histology. Amira was also used to compute endocast volume (as a proxy for brain size). Reconstructions of the wri

Strain in the galago facial skull.

Little experimental work has been directed at understanding the distribution of stresses along the facial skull during routine masticatory behaviors. Such information is important for understanding the functional significance of the mammalian circumorbital region. In this study, bone strain was recorded along the dorsal interorbit, postorbital bar, and mandibular corpus in Otolemur garnettii and O. crassicaudatus (greater galagos) during molar chewing and biting. We determined principal-strain magnitudes and directions, compared peak shear-strain magnitudes between various regions of the face,

Effects of testosterone on the sternal cutaneous glands and genitalia of the male greater galago (Galago crassicaudatus crassicaudatus).

Adult male and some female Galago crassicaudatus have a sparsely haired sternal gland which is used in scent marking displays. In both sexes, the skin in the sternal area contains many large sebaceous and apocrine glands. The sebaceous glands are largest in males and are dependent upon testicular androgens. Spines on the glans penis are also androgen dependent; their possible behavioural functions are discussed.

The pulvinar nucleus of Galago senegalensis.

The present study was undertaken to analyze the connections of the pulvinar nucleus in a prosimian. The experiments, which rely on the Fink-Heimer ('67) method for staining degenerating axons and their terminals, fall into two parts: first, the tracing of ascending tectal projections to the caudal thalamus and second, the tracing of projections from this thalamic target to the cortex. Large lesions of the superior colliculus resulted in dense degeneration in the caudal half of the inferior subdivision of the pulvinar complex. This pathway could be identified when the lesion was restricted to t

The thermoreculatory responses of the galago (Galago crassicaudatus), the baboon (Papio cynocephalus) and the chimpanzee (Pan stayrus) to heat stress.

1. The thermoregulatory response of the galago, the baboon and the chimpanzee were studied on exposure to dry bulb temperatures of up to 40 degrees C in a temperature controlled room. 2. Heat exposure caused an elevation in the respiratory frequency of all three species. The increase in the galago was significantly greater than that in the baboon and the chimpanzee. 3. Heat exposure also caused an increase in the cutaneous moisture loss of the baboon and the chimpanzee but not in the galago. 4. Rectal temperatures always rose on heat exposure but the animals never become hypethermic. 5. Sweat

Tumors in dwarf galagos (Galagoides demidovii).

Three spontaneously occurring tumors are described in dwarf galagos. One tumor was a subcutaneous fibrous histiocytoma in the left inguinal area of an adult male; the other two were bile duct carcinomas in a seven-year-old male and a four-year-old female. Both bile duct carcinomas had remarkable invasive and metastasizing capacities.

Interhemispheric connections of visual cortex of owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus), marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), and galagos (Galago crassicaudatus).

Interhemispheric connections of visual cortex were studied in owl monkeys, marmosets, and galagos after multiple injections of horseradish peroxidase into one cerebral hemisphere. Areal patterns of connections were revealed in sections of cortex that was flattened and cut parallel to the surface. Results were related to the locations of known visual areas, especially in owl monkeys, in which more visual areas have been established. The connection patterns in owl monkeys and marmosets are very similar, suggesting that the organization of visual cortex differs little in these two New World simia

Sex determination of the lesser bushbaby (Galago senegalensis).

The gross anatomy of the external genitalia of newborn to adult lesser Galago was described. The penis is perpendicular to the body wall at birth and by about 8 wk of age the testes have descended into the scrotum. In the adult male the testes are permanently descended, the scrotum sessile, the penis is oriented obliquely rostral, and the genitalia are covered by luxuriant pelage. In the young female, the clitoris is also perpendicular to the body wall and the labia and vaginal orifice, although not obvious, are located at its caudal base. In the adult female, the clitoris remains perpendicula

The chemo- and somatotopic architecture of the Galago cuneate and gracile nuclei.

The pattern of peripheral nerve inputs into the dorsal column nuclei, cuneate and gracile, was investigated in the prosimian Galago garnetti. The major findings were, that there is a greater segregation of the inputs from the fingers/hand within the cuneate compared with input form the toes/foot within the gracile. In both nuclei, cell clusters can be identified as cytochrome oxidase dense blotches, reactive also for the activity-dependent enzyme nitric oxide synthase. In the cuneate, cell clusters were apparent as six main cytochrome oxidase/nitric oxide synthase-reactive ovals arranged in a

Surface morphology of the ciliary apparatus in the eye of Galago senegalensis.

The folded portion of the ciliary body (pars plicata) in Galago senegalensis consists of a series of processes extending from the flat region (pars plana) over the posterior half of the ciliary muscle to the posterior surface of the iris near the limbus. Each process has an anterior portion (iridial process) that is distinguished by its surface morphology from a posterior portion (ciliary process). Iridial processes attach to the iris and are devoid of zonular fibers, while ciliary processes, although continuous with iridial processes, are covered completely with fibers. The transition from on

The postnatal development of retinal projections in strepsirrhine galagos (Otolemur garnettii).

Here, we describe the postnatal development of retinal projections in galagos. Galagos are of special interest as they represent the understudied strepsirrhine branch (galagos, pottos, lorises, and lemurs) of the primate radiations. The projections of both eyes were revealed in each galago by injecting red or green cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) tracers into different eyes of galagos ranging from postnatal day 5 to adult. In the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers were clearly labeled and identified by having inputs from the ipsilateral

Digestive strategy of the south-east African lesser bushbaby, Galago moholi.

Galago moholi is a small nocturnal primate, which has a specialised diet of Acacia exudate and insects. Both exudate and insect exoskeletons contain beta-linked polysaccharides that can be used as an energy source by mammals via microbial fermentation. The morphology of the gastro-intestinal tract of G. moholi suggests that the complex, elongate caecum, proximal colon and ansa coli are most likely to be the fermentation compartment. The results of a digesta marker study showed that there was selective retention of the fluid phase of the digesta, a pattern commonly seen in small caecum-fermenti

Somatosensory projections of cerebellar granule cell layer of giant bushbaby, Galago crassicaudatus.

Recent neurophysiological studies of the granule cell (GC) layer in opossums and rats revealed extensive somatosensory projections to the cerebellar hemispheres and caudal vermis. These projections are organized as asomatotopic mosaics that are species-specific. To determine whether similar projections exist in a primate with a relatively small and simple cerebellum, we explored the GC layer of exposed folial crowns of anterior and posterior lobe cerebellar cortex of anesthetized giant galagos using juxtathreshold natural stimulation of mechanoreceptors and in-depth microelectrode micromapping

Second somatic sensory cortical area (SII) in a prosimian primate, Galago crassicaudatus.

The cortex adjacent to and along the upper bank of the lateral sulcus (UB-LS) of a prosimian primate, Galago crassicaudatus, was explored to determine the topographical representation of low-threshold cutaneous inputs to this region. The somatic sensory projections to this cortex were considered homologous to those defined in other species as the second somatosensory cortical area (SII). Multiple and single neuron recordings were obtained with tungsten microelectrodes in animals anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital or ketamine hydrochloride; receptive fields were determined by means of manua

Secondary vestibulocerebellar projections to flocculonodular lobe in a prosimian primate, Galago senegalensis.

The organization of vestibulocerebellar projections to the flocculonodular and adjacent cortices were studied in Galago using horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Implants of HRP pellets or injections (0.14-0.95 microliter) were placed in floccular, parafloccular, nodular, and uvular cortices. Following survival times of 18-25 hours animals were killed via transcardiac perfusion of heparinized saline followed by a buffered solution of paraformaldehyde and glutaraldehyde. Tissues were processed using DAB as the chromogen. Consequent to floccular implants HRP-positive cells are found bilaterally in med

Cortical projections to the superior colliculus in prosimian galagos (Otolemur garnetti).

The superior colliculus (SC) is a key structure within the extrageniculate pathway of visual information to cortex and is highly involved in visuomotor functions. Previous studies in anthropoid primates have shown that superficial layers of the SC receive direct inputs from various visual cortical areas such as V1, V2, and middle temporal (MT), while deeper layers receive direct inputs from visuomotor cortical areas within the posterior parietal cortex and the frontal eye fields. Very little is known, however, about the corticotectal projections in prosimian primates. In the current study we i

Projections from the superior colliculus and the neocortex to the pulvinar nucleus in Galago.

We have studied the projections from the superior colliculus and the neocortex to the pulvinar nucleus in Galago senegalensis by using the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Injections of various parts of the pulvinar complex, both the inferior and superior divisions, both the tectorecipient zone and the nontectorecipient zone as defined by Glendenning et. al. ('75), produce labeled cells in the lower tier of stratum griseum superficiale. The distribution of labeled cells in the superior colliculus varies with the locus of the injection, indicating a retinotopic projection s
