Testing the cranial evolutionary allometric 'rule' in Galliformes.

Recent comparative studies have indicated the existence of a common cranial evolutionary allometric (CREA) pattern in mammals and birds, in which smaller species have relatively smaller faces and bigger braincases than larger species. In these studies, cranial allometry was tested using a multivariate regression between shape (described using landmarks coordinates) and size (i.e. centroid size), after accounting for phylogenetic relatedness. Alternatively, cranial allometry can be determined by comparing the sizes of two anatomical parts using a bivariate regression analysis. In this analysis,

Ghrelin, not corticosterone, is associated with transitioning of phenotypic states in a migratory Galliform.

In both captive and free-living birds, the emergence of the migratory phenotype is signalled by rapid and marked increases in food intake and fuelling, as well as changes in amount of nocturnality or migratory restlessness. The metabolic hormone corticosterone and, as more recently suggested, the gut-derived hormone ghrelin have been suggested to play a role in mediating such phenomenal phenotypic flexibility given that they both regulate fuel metabolism and locomotion across vertebrate taxa. Here, using the Common quail (Coturnix coturnix) as our study species, we induced autumn migration fol

A quantitative morphological analysis of the inner ear of galliform birds.

The function of the inner ear is dependent on its physical structure and there is therefore a strong correspondence between inner ear morphology and hearing capabilities. In this study, we examine the morphology of the inner ear and use this relationship to predict the hearing range and sensitivities of species within the Order Galliformes (chicken, quail and allies). All galliforms share a similar inner ear morphology, which is characterized by gradients in hair cell morphology that are similar to other birds. Most galliforms did have an area of morphologically similar hair cells at the apica

Preliminary disease surveillance in west Texas quail (galliformes: odontophoridae) populations.

Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) occur throughout northwestern Texas and overall population numbers have been declining for the past 30 yr. This decline has been attributed to habitat loss associated with intensive agricultural practices. We propose that disease may be a contributing factor to decline. Our findings suggest that West Nile virus (WNV) infection may be common in wild quail populations on the Rolling Plains of northwestern Texas. Serum samples (n=301) from wild-caught Northern Bobwhite and Scaled Quail were collected during 2008-10 fro

Gastroenteric parasite of wild Galliformes in the Italian Alps: implication for conservation management.

This study provides insights about the diversity, prevalence and distribution of alpine wild galliformes gastrointestinal parasite community, trying to fill a gap in the scientific information currently available in scientific literature. The analysis included three host species: 77 rock partridge (Alectoris graeca saxatilis), 83 black grouse (Tetrao tetrix tetrix) and 26 rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta helveticus) shot during the hunting seasons 2008-2015. Parasites isolated were Ascaridia compar, Capillaria caudinflata and cestodes. The rock ptarmigan was free from gastrointestinal parasites, w

Macronutrient signals for adaptive modulation of intestinal digestive enzymes in two omnivorous Galliformes.

According to the adaptive modulation hypothesis, digestive enzyme activities are matched to their respective dietary substrate level so that ingested nutrients are not wasted in excreta due to insufficient digestive capacity, and so membrane space or expenditures building/maintaining the intestinal hydrolytic machinery are not wasted when substrate levels are low. We tested predictions in juvenile northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) and juvenile and adult domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) by feeding them on diets varying in starch, protein, and lipid composition for 7-9 d (bobw

Relative testis size is associated with vagina length but not sperm storage traits in Galliformes.

Post-copulatory sexual selection, comprised of sperm competition and cryptic female choice, is a powerful evolutionary force that can drive the rapid diversification of reproductive traits across taxa. In birds, the female reproductive tract provides the arena for post-copulatory sexual selection, yet we lack a comprehensive understanding of the female specific processes that shape the evolution of sexually selected traits. Here, we use a comparative approach to explore the relationships between female reproductive tract morphology, sperm competition intensity, and sperm traits across Gallifor

Accurate characterization of the IFITM locus using MiSeq and PacBio sequencing shows genetic variation in Galliformes.

BACKGROUND: Interferon inducible transmembrane (IFITM) proteins are effectors of the immune system widely characterized for their role in restricting infection by diverse enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. The chicken IFITM (chIFITM) genes are clustered on chromosome 5 and to date four genes have been annotated, namely chIFITM1, chIFITM3, chIFITM5 and chIFITM10. However, due to poor assembly of this locus in the Gallus Gallus v4 genome, accurate characterization has so far proven problematic. Recently, a new chicken reference genome assembly Gallus Gallus v5 was generated using Sanger, 454,

Capillariid nematodes in Brazilian turkeys, Meleagris gallopavo (Galliformes, Phasianidae): pathology induced by Baruscapillaria obsignata and Eucoleus annulatus (Trichinelloidea, Capillariidae).

The pathology induced in turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) by two capillariid nematodes, Baruscapillaria obsignata and Eucoleus annulatus is described together with data on prevalences, mean infection and range of worm burdens. B. obsignata occurred with a prevalence of 72.5% in the 40 examined hosts in a range of 2-461 nematodes and a mean intensity of 68.6, whereas E. annulatus was present in 2.5% of the animals, with a total amount of five recovered parasites. Gross lesions were not observed in the parasitized birds. Lesions due to B. obsignata mainly consisted of the thickening of intestinal v

Sequencing of the core MHC region of black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and comparative genomics of the galliform MHC.

BACKGROUND: The MHC, which is regarded as the most polymorphic region in the genomes of jawed vertebrates, plays a central role in the immune system by encoding various proteins involved in the immune response. The chicken MHC-B genomic region has a highly streamlined gene content compared to mammalian MHCs. Its core region includes genes encoding Class I and Class IIB molecules but is only ~92Kb in length. Sequences of other galliform MHCs show varying degrees of similarity as that of chicken. The black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) is a wild galliform bird species which is an important model in con

Nasal conchae function as aerodynamic baffles: Experimental computational fluid dynamic analysis in a turkey nose (Aves: Galliformes).

We tested the aerodynamic function of nasal conchae in birds using CT data from an adult male wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) to construct 3D models of its nasal passage. A series of digital "turbinectomies" were performed on these models and computational fluid dynamic analyses were performed to simulate resting inspiration. Models with turbinates removed were compared to the original, unmodified control airway. Results revealed that the four conchae found in turkeys, along with the crista nasalis, alter the flow of inspired air in ways that can be considered baffle-like. However, these baf

Study of GABAA receptors on the sleep-like behavior in Coturnix japonica (Temminck Schlegel, 1849) (Galliformes: Aves).

The present study was carried out to investigate the influence of GABAA signaling on sleep-like behaviors through systemic administration of bicuculline and picrotoxin (GABAA antagonists) and thiopental (an allosterical modulator). A thiopental (20 mg/kg) injection increased the eye closure frequency compared to the control group. The birds quickly became sleepy with a low frequency of early behavioral stages, such as rapid oral movement (ROM), feather ruffling and blinking. A bicuculline administration (1 and 4 mg/kg) did not modify the frequency of feather ruffling, ROM, eye closure or blink

Semen collection and artificial insemination in the common piping guan (Pipile cumanensis cumanensis): potential applications for Cracidae (Aves: Galliformes).

The common piping guan (Pipile cumanensis cumanensis) is serving as a model for assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) in Cracidae (Aves: Galliformes). Manual collection methods used in domestic birds and other exotics were modified to optimize quality and quantity of fresh semen samples. In addition, a method to subjectively assess semen quality on the basis of its color, clarity, and consistency was developed to serve as a tool when laboratory equipment is not available. In a species where only two eggs per clutch is typical, predictability of the date of the first egg is critical to ensure

Storage time and temperature of filter paper strips affect anti-West Nile virus antibody detection in 2 galliform species.

The effects of filter paper strip (FPS) storage time and temperature on antibody detection are poorly understood despite widespread use in wildlife research. We collected sera and FPSs from 23 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) and 20 northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) experimentally infected with West Nile virus (WNV) to compare FPS storage methods with WNV plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) sensitivity. FPS storage methods included: immediate elution after drying, and storage at -20°C for 3 mo, -20°C for 6 mo, room temperature (RT) for 3 mo, and RT for 6 mo prior to elution. F

Haemoproteus paraortalidum in wild Dusky-legged Guans Penelope obscura (Galliformes: Cracidae) admitted to a Brazilian rehabilitation center: Morphological insights into blood and tissue stages.

Haemosporidians are globally distributed parasites that exhibit high diversity and prevalence in Neotropical wild bird populations. Although long-term host-parasite coevolution often results in mild infections, disease outcomes may differ in naïve hosts, particularly in captive or managed environments where opportunities for pathogen spillover are increased. Haemoproteus (Parahaemoproteus) paraortalidum was originally described infecting captive-born Black-fronted Piping-Guans (Aburria jacutinga), an endangered cracid species maintained in a Brazilian wildlife rehabilitation centre. Hitherto, the chewing louse genus Goniodes Nitzsch, 1818 (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Goniodidae) has been the repository of many morphologically different species, which have been placed in separate groups by some authors. The morphological variation among species of Goniodes is so extensive that no characters can unequivocally separate it from closely related genera within the Goniodidae, in particular Goniocotes Burmeister, 1838. Based on a thorough examination of many species, especially the type species of related genera, we propose to divide Goniodes into thirty-one smaller, morphologicall
