Multi-agent game theory for precision psychiatry.

Psychiatry has learned to measure and map the brain in exquisite detail, yet it still lacks a theory of what happens between minds. Most current frameworks treat cognition as an individual process, studied through static and non-interactive tasks, creating a fundamental mismatch with real-world social behavior, which is dynamic and reciprocal. In restricted psychiatric conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia with social phenotypes, core symptoms emerge most clearly during interaction. Here I argue that these differences are better understood as failures of coordinat

John Nash, game theory, and the schizophrenic brain.

This article focuses on John Nash, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994, and subject of the Award winning 2001 film A Beautiful Mind, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1958 at the age of 29. After presenting an account of the emergence, course, and eventual remission of his illness, the article argues for the relevance of his contribution to game theory, known as the Nash equilibrium, for which he received the Nobel Prize, to research studies of the schizophrenic brain and how it deviates from the normal brain. The case is made that the Nash equilibrium is descripti

MODELING AND SIMULATING CHOLERA TRANSMISSION DYNAMICS WITH EVOLUTIONARY GAME THEORY.

Cholera, a highly debilitating gastrointestinal disease caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, continues to be a significant public health issue in many countries and regions around the globe. Conventional epidemiological models often fail to adequately account for the strategic connections between individuals and how these interactions influence disease spread. This paper examines cholera dynamics using evolutionary game theory and proposes a novel paradigm for analyzing the impact of human behavior and strategic decision-making on cholera transmission. The model incorporates the evolutionar

Molecular game theory for a toxin-dominant food chain model.

Animal toxins that are used to subdue prey and deter predators act as the key drivers in natural food chains and ecosystems. However, the predators of venomous animals may exploit feeding adaptation strategies to overcome toxins their prey produce. Much remains unknown about the genetic and molecular game process in the toxin-dominant food chain model. Here, we show an evolutionary strategy in different trophic levels of scorpion-eating amphibians, scorpions and insects, representing each predation relationship in habitats dominated by the paralytic toxins of scorpions. For scorpions preying o

A Theory-Driven Game-Based Assessment of Collaborative Problem-Solving.

Collaborative problem-solving (CPS) is an essential 21st-century competency, yet its valid and ecologically sound assessment remains challenging due to inconsistent frameworks, poorly aligned task design, and over-reliance on behavior frequency counting in scoring. This study developed and provided empirical support for a theory-driven game-based CPS assessment embedded in a real-time strategy game, using a customized Collaborative Siege Task with asymmetric roles and ill-structured problems, to elicit more realistic collaborative interactions. Based on a validated three-facet CPS framework fr

Optimizing adaptive cancer therapy: dynamic programming and evolutionary game theory.

Recent clinical trials have shown that adaptive drug therapies can be more efficient than a standard cancer treatment based on a continuous use of maximum tolerated doses (MTD). The adaptive therapy paradigm is not based on a preset schedule; instead, the doses are administered based on the current state of tumour. But the adaptive treatment policies examined so far have been largely ad hoc. We propose a method for systematically optimizing adaptive policies based on an evolutionary game theory model of cancer dynamics. Given a set of treatment objectives, we use the framework of dynamic progr

The ecology of cancer from an evolutionary game theory perspective.

The accumulation of somatic mutations, to which the cellular genome is permanently exposed, often leads to cancer. Analysis of any tumour shows that, besides the malignant cells, one finds other 'supporting' cells such as fibroblasts, immune cells of various types and even blood vessels. Together, these cells generate the microenvironment that enables the malignant cell population to grow and ultimately lead to disease. Therefore, understanding the dynamics of tumour growth and response to therapy is incomplete unless the interactions between the malignant cells and normal cells are investigat

Rules of social exchange: game theory, individual differences and psychopathology.

Human social interaction is rarely guided by pure reason. Instead, in situation in which humans have the option to cooperate, to defect, or to punish non-cooperative behavior of another person, they quite uniformly tend to reciprocate "good" deeds, reject unfair proposals, and try to enforce obedience to social rules and norms in non-cooperative individuals ("free-riders"), even if the punishment incurs costs to the punisher. Abundant research using various game theoretical approaches has examined these apparently irrational human behaviors. This article reviews the evolutionary rationale of h

The potential use of game theory in decision-making in CHD.

Background: Congenital cardiac care involves multiple stakeholders including patients and their families, surgeons, cardiologists, anaesthetists, the wider multidisciplinary team, healthcare providers, and manufacturers, all of whom are involved in the decision-making process to some degree. Game theory utilises human behaviour to address the dynamics involved in a decision and what the best payoff is depending on the decision of other players. Aim: By presenting these interactions as a strategic game, this paper aims to provide a descriptive analysis on the utility and effectiveness of game t

Insights from epidemiological game theory into gender-specific vaccination against rubella.

Rubella is a highly contagious childhood disease that causes relatively mild symptoms. However, rubella can result in severe congenital defects, known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), if transmitted from a mother to a fetus. Consequently, women have higher incentive to vaccinate against rubella than men do. Within the population vaccination reduces transmission but also increases the average age of infection and possibly the risk of CRS among unvaccinated females. To evaluate how the balance among these factors results in optimal coverage of vaccination, we developed a game theoretic age-

Chemical Game Theory: Linking Metabolite Diversity, Biosynthetic Architecture, and Realized Payoffs.

Plant chemodiversity is generally evaluated through metabolite richness, relative abundance, compositional dissimilarity, and biosynthetic organization. However, these descriptors characterize chemical states without explicitly identifying which metabolites, chemical classes, or biosynthetic pathways gain or lose relative representation during transitions between states. Here, we introduce Chemical Game Theory as an operational analogy inspired by the relative-performance principle of replicator dynamics. Metabolites are treated as elementary chemical strategies, biosynthetic pathways constitu

Evolutionary game theory and social learning can determine how vaccine scares unfold.

Immunization programs have often been impeded by vaccine scares, as evidenced by the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) autism vaccine scare in Britain. A "free rider" effect may be partly responsible: vaccine-generated herd immunity can reduce disease incidence to such low levels that real or imagined vaccine risks appear large in comparison, causing individuals to cease vaccinating. This implies a feedback loop between disease prevalence and strategic individual vaccinating behavior. Here, we analyze a model based on evolutionary game theory that captures this feedback in the context of vaccine sca

Integrated Scheduling Algorithm Based on Matching Game Theory in LEO Satellite Networks.

As an indispensable component of space-terrestrial integrated networks, low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks are capable of providing flexible access and low delay communication services for emerging time-sensitive traffic. However, the inconsistent transmission rates between intra-satellite wired links and inter-satellite wireless links will undoubtedly result in unstable delay at the satellites. This disparity poses a challenge to ensuring deterministic communication for time-sensitive traffic. Aiming at this problem, we put forward an integrated scheduling algorithm based on matching ga

Cooperation, Defection, and Collapse: A Multiscale Game Theory Framework for Emphysema Progression.

In the current paper, pulmonary emphysema is hypothesized to emerge from a nonlinear breakdown of cooperation across two tightly coupled systems: the extracellular matrix (ECM) crosslink network and the cellular populations responsible for its maintenance. To formalize this concept, we construct a game-theoretic model that unifies the mechanical failure, inflammatory changes, and percolation-driven tissue collapse that are recognized features of the disease. At the ECM level, elastin and collagen crosslinks are modeled as players in an iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, where cooperation corresponds

Game Theory-Based Adaptive Human-Machine Joint Learning for Online MI-BCI Decoding.

Motor imagery based brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) has been extensively researched for neurorehabilitation and motor assistance, while the performance of previous MI-BCI systems for online decoding motor intentions is still not satisfactory. Therefore, a game theory-based adaptive human-machine joint (AHMJ) learning method integrating subject learning and decoder updating was proposed for MI-BCI decoding, by which multi-class MI for unilateral upper limb can be successfully decoded online. On the one hand, a novel MI training method was proposed to facilitate subjects' learning to generate

Selection of sustainable municipal water reuse applications by multi-stakeholders using game theory.

Globally the trend of water reuse has been increasing. The public perception and government regulations are supportive for reclaimed water use in Canada. Reclaimed water can be used in variety of applications that may have different performance in economic, environmental and social dimensions for various stakeholders, indicating decision on water reuse selection is complex. This research proposes a multi-criteria multi-decision-makers framework combining multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) and game theory for a selection of a sustainable water reuse application. The proposed framework is ap

Game theory of pre-emptive vaccination before bioterrorism or accidental release of smallpox.

Smallpox was eradicated in the 1970s, but new outbreaks could be seeded by bioterrorism or accidental release. Substantial vaccine-induced morbidity and mortality make pre-emptive mass vaccination controversial, and if vaccination is voluntary, then there is a conflict between self- and group interests. This conflict can be framed as a tragedy of the commons, in which herd immunity plays the role of the commons, and free-riding (i.e. not vaccinating pre-emptively) is analogous to exploiting the commons. This game has been analysed previously for a particular post-outbreak vaccination scenario.

The use and effect of video game design theory in the creation of game-based systems for upper limb stroke rehabilitation.

Upper limb exercise is often neglected during post-stroke rehabilitation. Video games have been shown to be useful in providing environments in which patients can practise repetitive, functionally meaningful movements, and in inducing neuroplasticity. The design of video games is often focused upon a number of fundamental principles, such as reward, goals, challenge and the concept of meaningful play, and these same principles are important in the design of games for rehabilitation. Further to this, there have been several attempts for the strengthening of the relationship between commercial g

NEV battery recycling innovation strategy considering pro-social behavior from the game theory perspective.

Technological innovation serves as the core driving force for achieving sustainable and circular transportation systems. However, during the recycling process, consumers' pro-social behavior such as willingness to return used batteries and support green initiatives, directly influences recycling rates and incentivizes recyclers to adopt advanced technologies. To explore this dynamic, this paper constructs a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) decision-making game model involving new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturers, recyclers, and consumers, with a focus on power battery recycling. The study aim
