Developing critical thinking skills through gamification.

Misinformation as well as the proliferation of fake news has been a problem during COVID-19 pandemic. This has affected many vulnerable communities in Brazil. The ability to understand and sort out pieces of reliable information and fake news has become a fundamental cognitive skill. In this study we report on the development of a serious game (a card-based role-playing game) using Brazilian folk heroes aimed to develop critical thinking skills to empower vulnerable communities affected by misinformation and fake news. Four groups located in the city of Goiânia (Brazil) participated in this re

Gamification for Family Engagement in Lifestyle Interventions: A Systematic Review.

The majority of chronic conditions that plague the USA are modifiable by lifestyle change. Lifestyle interventions that incorporate family members for social support and that use game design elements to engage family members have the potential to improve upon traditional interventions, which have largely been unsustainable. Determining the populations where family member support in a lifestyle intervention are present and the extent of gamification of lifestyle intervention components that engage these family members is an important and underexplored area of work. A systematic review of lifest

Collaborative intelligence and gamification for on-line malaria species differentiation.

BACKGROUND: Current World Health Organization recommendations for the management of malaria include the need for a parasitological confirmation prior to triggering appropriate treatment. The use of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria has contributed to a better infection recognition and a more targeted treatment. Nevertheless, low-density infections and parasites that fail to produce HRP2 can cause false-negative RDT results. Microscopy has traditionally been the methodology most commonly used to quantify malaria and characterize the infecting species, but the wider use of this technique

Confucian values and continuance intention in leaderboard-based health gamification.

OBJECTIVE: Although gamification has been shown to enhance user motivation and engagement, its effects may vary across cultural contexts. This study examines how Confucian values shape users' continuance intention in leaderboard-based health gamification through positive and negative psychological pathways. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of 300 WeChat Run users and analyzed the data using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Drawing on the Confucian values perspective and the dedication-constraint model, we conceptualized self-cultivation as an enabling Confuc

A pilot randomized clinical trial of gamification to increase medication adherence.

INTRODUCTION: Medication nonadherence is a key contributor to poor control of cardiovascular risk factors, but most interventions shown to increase adherence are labor-intensive and have not been implemented widely. Gamification interventions informed by behavioral economic theory increase physical activity with minimal cost and personnel requirements. We tested the feasibility of a gamification intervention to increase medication adherence among patients at risk of cardiovascular disease with a history of medication nonadherence. METHODS: Patients seen in a single primary care clinic who wer

Gamification strategies that promote leisure participation in children and youth with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Participation in leisure activities is important for childhood development; however, youth with disabilities (YWD) experience participation limitations due to various barriers, including a lack of information about available adaptive and inclusive leisure activities. The Jooay mobile app, addresses this barrier by providing YWD, parents, and clinicians with information about adaptive and leisure activities in their neighborhoods across Canada. Game-like features, known as gamification, can enhance user engagement with mobile technologies and support health behavior change. OBJECTI

What's the Point?: A Review of Reward Systems Implemented in Gamification Interventions.

Rewards are commonly used in interventions to change behavior, but they can inhibit development of intrinsic motivation, which is associated with long-term behavior maintenance. Gamification is a novel intervention strategy that may target intrinsic motivation through fun and enjoyment. Before the effects of gamified interventions on motivation can be determined, there must be an understanding of how gamified interventions operationalize rewards, such as point systems. The purpose of this review is to determine the prevalence of different reward types, specifically point systems, within gamifi
