The pelvic ganglia provide the majority of the autonomic nerve supply to reproductive organs, urinary bladder, and lower bowel. Of all autonomic ganglia, they are probably the least understood because in many species their anatomy is particularly complex. Furthermore, they are unusual autonomic ganglia in many ways, including their connections, structure, chemistry, and hormone sensitivity. This review will compare and contrast the normal structure and function of pelvic ganglia with other types of autonomic ganglia (sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric). Two aspects of plasticity in the

Investigation into reports of pain treatment for abdominal cancer and abdominal pain syndromes revealed the lack of human studies on some of the abdominal sympathetic ganglia. Recent studies on renal artery denervation therapy as treatment for resistant hypertension has made the aorticorenal ganglia of particular importance. The aim of this study was to investigate the location, morphology, interconnections, and histological nature of aorticorenal ganglia. We dissected nine abdominal cavities and harvested 37 aorticorenal ganglia. Hematoxylin and Eosin, and Masson's staining techniques were us

Basal ganglia calcification (BGC) is now being diagnosed with increasing frequency with widespread application of computed tomography (CT) in clinical practice and is no more considered a rarity. During the period 1987 to 1995, 42 patients were noted to have BGC and it constituted 0.93% of all CT scan of brain carried out during the relevant period. These patients presented with diverse neurological and endocrine disorders i.e., epilepsy (22 patients), mental retardation (five patients), extra-pyramidal syndromes (five patients), abnormal behaviour (three patients), stroke (two patients), rais

This review presents state-of-the-art knowledge about the roles of the basal ganglia (BG) in action-selection, cognition, and motivation, and how this knowledge has been used to improve deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Such pathological conditions include Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Tourette syndrome, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The first section presents evidence supporting current hypotheses of how the cortico-BG circuitry works to select motor and emotional actions, and how defects in this circuitry can cause

The basal ganglia are an evolutionarily conserved neural circuit best known for the selection and sequencing of voluntary movement. Increasing evidence, however, indicates that these structures also play an important role in regulating pathological brain states, including seizures. Early pharmacological and lesion studies demonstrated that manipulation of basal ganglia output nuclei, particularly the substantia nigra pars reticulata, profoundly alters seizure susceptibility across multiple experimental models. Subsequent work expanded this view, revealing that several basal ganglia structures,

Ever since Liepmann's original descriptions at the beginning of the century apraxia has usually been attributed to damage confined to the cerebral cortex and/or cortico-cortical connecting pathways. However, there have been suggestions that apraxia can be due to deep subcortical lesions, which raises the question as to whether damage to the basal ganglia or thalamus can cause apraxia. We therefore analysed 82 cases of such 'deep' apraxias reported in the literature. These reports consisted of a small number (n=9) of cases studied neuropathologically, and a much larger group (n=73) in which CT

When viewed as a whole, these basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical circuits appear to play a modulating role in a wide range of behaviors. At the cortical level, given convergence upon specified regions within the frontal lobes, the behaviors in question would be those dependent upon SMA, premotor, frontal eye fields, dorsolateral, and orbitofrontal outflow targets. Broadly speaking, processes such as the generation, maintenance, switching, and blending of motor, mental, or emotional sets would be involved. Accordingly, in basal ganglia disease, the planning and the execution of the above behavioral

The purpose of this article is to review the English language medical literature involving intraosseous ganglia and to report the rare finding of a histologically proven intraosseous ganglion found in the calcaneus. Intraosseous ganglia are rare lesions of bone seen in the metaphyses or epiphyses of long bones. The lesion is more common in the lower extremity; however, very few have been reported in the foot. The lesion is usually in close proximity to a joint, but rarely has any communication with it. The intact intraosseous ganglion is smooth and round in shape, with an opalescent color indi

The generation and learning of movements involves interactions among specific neuronal populations within and across brain regions. Important among these regions, for movement among other functions, are the basal ganglia, a set of evolutionarily conserved interconnected deep-brain nuclei. This is strikingly illustrated by how their pathological dysfunction in Parkinson's disease deeply impacts the ability to move. The basal ganglia control the production of different movements through dedicated circuits. These span multiple brain nuclei with complex but highly organized entry and exit routes,

The basal ganglia are deep nuclei in the brain that include the caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, and substantia nigra. Pathological processes involving the basal ganglia often result in disorders of movement and behavior. A number of different autoimmune disorders predominantly involve the basal ganglia and can result in movement and psychiatric disorders. The classic basal ganglia autoimmune disorder is Sydenham chorea, a poststreptococcal neuropsychiatric disorder. Resurgence in the interest in Sydenham chorea is the result of the descriptions of other poststreptococcal neuropsychiatric di

An intraosseous ganglion is a relatively uncommon, benign cystic lesion that occurs in young and middle-aged adults. Bilateral and symmetrical lesions of the wrist are rare. Intraosseous ganglia of the carpal bones are uncommon causes of chronic wrist pain. Isolated cases of intraosseous ganglion have been reported most commonly in the lunate and scaphoid. The lunate was most frequently affected, followed by the capitate, scaphoid, and triquetrum bones. Radiolucent lesions in the carpal bones are not uncommon and are often seen incidentally in asymptomatic patients. The differential diagnosis

Basal ganglia are subcortical structures specialized at very early age, functionally different according to the right or left side. They are part of complex distributed network composed by parallel segregated loops where specific information are processed and open loops where different information are integrated. These loops are connected to specialized cortical areas thus entering into distributed processing of higher order cognitive functions and behaviours. Lesion or malfunction of basal ganglia nuclei cause deficits in different neuropsychological functions and neurobehavioural diseases, s

This report documents the treatment of 33 foot and ankle ganglia. The average patient age was 39 years (versus 25 years for patients with ganglia about the wrist joint). Twenty-one ganglia were treated operatively and nine recurred. Three patients suffered cutaneous nerve injury. The other 12 ganglia were treated by aspiration and steroid injection. There were four recurrences, one of which was cured by a second injection. Two of the four recurrences were small and asymptomatic and required no treatment. There were no complications with aspiration and injection. In view of the high recurrence

Sydenham's chorea (SC) is a major manifestation of rheumatic fever, and the production of anti-basal ganglia antibodies (ABGA) has been proposed in SC. The pathogenesis is hypothesized as autoimmune targeting of the basal ganglia via molecular mimicry, triggered by streptococcal infection. The spectrum of diseases in which ABGA may be involved has been broadened to include other extrapyramidal movement disorders, such as tics, dystonia, and Parkinsonism, as well as other psychiatric disorders. The autoimmune hypothesis in the presence and absence of ABGA has been suggested in Tourette's syndro

In summary, the scheme of basal ganglia function presented here, in conjunction with known features of anatomical organization and dopamine neurotransmission provides a hypothesis for the pathophysiology of tics. According to the hypothesis, clusters of striatal neurons (matrisomes) become abnormally active in inappropriate contexts leading to inhibition of GPi or SNpr neurons that would normally be active to supress unwanted movements. The inhibition of htese GPi or SNpr neurons would then disinhibit thalamocortical circuits. Leading to the production of tics. Activity-dependent dopamine effe

Antibasal ganglia antibodies (ABGA) are associated with Sydenham's chorea and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections. We present 10 patients with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) associated with Group A beta hemolytic streptococcal infection. The clinical phenotype was novel, with 50% having a dystonic extrapyramidal movement disorder, and 70% a behavioral syndrome. None of the patients had rheumatic fever or Sydenham's chorea. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western immunoblotting, and immunohistochemistry were used to detect ABG

OBJECTIVES: Incidence rate of basal ganglia infarction (BGI) after mild head trauma was reported higher in children with basal ganglia calcification (BGC). We would like to review patients with BGC showed in head CT scan to see the incidence rate of stroke in these patients and the correlation of variables in these cases.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: CT imaging data of cases with diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in a large tertiary pediatric center between Mar. 2014 and Mar. 2019 was retrospectively reviewed. Cases with findings of punctate calcification in the region of basal ganglio
