Anatomic variation of cranial parasympathetic ganglia.

Having broad knowledge of anatomy is essential for practicing dentistry. Certain anatomical structures call for detailed studies due to their anatomical and functional importance. Nevertheless, some structures are difficult to visualize and identify due to their small volume and complicated access. Such is the case of the parasympathetic ganglia located in the cranial part of the autonomic nervous system, which include: the ciliary ganglion (located deeply in the orbit, laterally to the optic nerve), the pterygopalatine ganglion (located in the pterygopalatine fossa), the submandibular ganglio

Cholinergic transmission in cat parasympathetic ganglia.

1. Intracellular electrical recording techniques were used to study the ionic mechanisms of cholinergic synaptic transmission in cat vesical pelvic ganglia (v.p.g.). 2. Orthodromic nerve stimulation as well as ionophoretic application of acetylcholine (ACh) resulted in, first, a fast excitatory post-synaptic potential (f.e.p.s.p.) and secondly, a slow inhibitory post-synaptic potential (s.i.p.s.p). These distinct post-synaptic responses were direct actions of ACh and not mediated through an interneurone. In addition, a slow excitatory post-synaptic potential (s.e.p.s.p.) was observed in 44% of

Parkinson's disease with involvement of the parasympathetic ganglia.

We report the distribution of Lewy bodies in an 83-year-old man who was diagnosed histopathologically as having Parkinson's disease. Many sections were taken from the brain, spinal cord, spinal dorsal root ganglia and peripheral autonomic systems. In the central nervous system, Lewy bodies were present in many of the areas already reported by previous authors. In the peripheral nervous system, Lewy bodies were present in the sympathetic ganglia, enteric nervous system of the alimentary tract and the submandibular ganglion, which is a peripheral parasympathetic ganglion. The present case indica

Neurodevelopment. Parasympathetic ganglia derive from Schwann cell precursors.

Neural crest cells migrate extensively and give rise to most of the peripheral nervous system, including sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric, and dorsal root ganglia. We studied how parasympathetic ganglia form close to visceral organs and what their precursors are. We find that many cranial nerve-associated crest cells coexpress the pan-autonomic determinant Paired-like homeodomain 2b (Phox2b) together with markers of Schwann cell precursors. Some give rise to Schwann cells after down-regulation of PHOX2b. Others form parasympathetic ganglia after being guided to the site of ganglion format

Parasympathetic ganglia innervating the canine atrioventricular nodal region.

Surgical disruption of the small (approximately 0.7 x 1.0 cm) epicardial fat pad situated at the junction of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and inferior surface of the left atrium (ILA) interrupts both right and left vagal input to the atrioventricular nodal (AVN) region of the canine heart. This intervention eliminates AV block during supramaximal stimulation of both cervical vagi, without interfering with sinus bradycardia normally associated with sinoatrial nodal (SAN) suppression. Independent modulation of SAN and AVN activities by the parasympathetic system is thereby revealed. Histology of

Muscarinic receptor regulation of synaptic transmission in airway parasympathetic ganglia.

Muscarinic receptor regulation of synaptic transmission in guinea pig bronchial parasympathetic ganglia was evaluated with the use of intracellular recording of the intrinsic ganglion neurons. Methacholine (1 microM) decreased the amplitude of vagus nerve-stimulated fast excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSP) by 33 and 46% (at 0.8 and 8.0 Hz, respectively) but had no effect on the amplitude of the depolarizations evoked by a bath-applied nicotinic receptor agonist. Methoctramine (1 microM) inhibited methacholine's effect on fEPSP but alone did not influence the magnitude of the fEPSP evoke

BDNF/TrkB Signaling in Intracardiac Ganglia Modulates Cardiac Parasympathetic Tone.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) impacts parasympathetic nervous system function by increasing the excitability of cardioinhibitory parasympathetic neurons in the brainstem, ultimately lowering heart rate (HR) and heightening resting parasympathetic tone. Yet, whether BDNF and its high-affinity receptor-tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB)-also act more distally, i.e., at the level of cholinergic-sensitive intrinsic cardiac ganglia (ICGs), remains unclear. Hence, we conducted morphological and functional studies in neural crest-specific BDNF knockout mice (ncBDNF KO), a model that sele

5-Hydroxytryptamine produces presynaptic facilitation of cholinergic transmission in rabbit parasympathetic ganglia.

Intracellular recordings were made from neurons of rabbit vesical pelvic (parasympathetic) ganglia (VPG). Application of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, 0.3-30 microM) produced an initial depression followed by a long-lasting facilitation of the fast excitatory postsynaptic potential (e.p.s.p.) evoked by stimulation of the pelvic preganglionic nerve. The facilitation of nicotinic transmission lasted for 30-120 min, even when 5-HT was removed from the superfusing solution. 5-HT (0.3-30 microM) did not change the depolarization induced by a direct application of acetylcholine (ACh) to the VPG neurons

Reorganization of sympathetic preganglionic connections in cat bladder ganglia following parasympathetic denervation.

1. Experiments were undertaken to examine the mechanisms involved in the reorganization of sympathetic efferent pathways to the urinary bladder of the cat following chronic unilateral, parasympathetic preganglionic denervation of the bladder. 2. Electrical stimulation (10-30 Hz) of the hypogastric nerve in cats with an intact bladder innervation or on the normally innervated side of the bladder in unilaterally denervated preparations elicited low-amplitude (10-25 cmH2O) transient (10-30 s) bladder contractions and non-synaptic axonal volleys on bladder postganglionic nerves. However, after chr

Anatomical study of the roots of cranial parasympathetic ganglia: a contribution to medical education.

A major key to increasing the safety of cranial surgery is a thorough understanding of anatomy. The anatomy of the head is of fundamental interest to dental and medical students early in their studies. Clinically, it is mostly relevant to surgeons who are performing interventions and reconstruction in the maxillofacial region, skull base, and the orbit. However, the level of appropriate anatomical knowledge necessary for general and special medical and surgical practice is still under discussion. This study maps the significant areas and structures of the head that are not normally accessible

Resting membrane potential and potassium currents in cultured parasympathetic neurones from rat intracardiac ganglia.

1. Whole-cell K+ currents contributing to the resting membrane potential and repolarization of the action potential were studied in voltage-clamped parasympathetic neurones dissociated from neonatal rat intracardiac ganglia and maintained in tissue culture. 2. Rat intracardiac neurones had a mean resting membrane potential of -52 mV and mean input resistance of 850 M omega. The current-voltage relationship recorded during slow voltage ramps indicated the presence of both leakage and voltage-dependent currents. The contribution of Na+, K+ and Cl- to the resting membrane potential was examined a

Nitric oxide facilitates vagal control of heart rate via actions in the cardiac parasympathetic ganglia of the anaesthetised dog.

The effects of neuronal inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production on the bradycardia resulting from stimulation of preganglionic and postganglionic parasympathetic fibres were investigated in an anaesthetised dog preparation following transection of the cervical vagi and in the presence of a beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist. Injection of 1-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl) imidazole (TRIM), an inhibitor of neuronally released NO, into the sinus node artery reduced the bradycardia evoked by right cervical vagal stimulation. In contrast, when the response to preganglionic stimulation had been abolished b

Sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons are likely to be absent in the human vestibular and geniculate ganglia: an immunohistochemical study using elderly cadaveric specimens.

The vestibular and geniculate ganglia of the ear in experimental animals carry both of the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive sympathetic neurons and the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-positive parasympathetic neurons. With an aid of immunohistochemistry, we examined these ganglia as well as the horizontal part of the facial nerve using specimens from 10 formalin-fixed elderly cadavers. The submandibular ganglion from the same cadavers was used for the positive control for both markers. Although there was a nonspecific reaction in nuclei for the present antibody of nNOS, these ganglia w

Nerve growth factor acutely potentiates synaptic transmission in vitro and induces dendritic growth in vivo on adult neurons in airway parasympathetic ganglia.

Elevated levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) and NGF-mediated neural plasticity may have a role in airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although NGF is known to affect sensory and sympathetic nerves, especially during development, little is known regarding its effect on parasympathetic nerves, especially on adult neurons. The purpose of this study was to analyze the acute and chronic effects of NGF on the electrophysiological and anatomical properties of neurons in airway parasympathetic ganglia from adult guinea pigs. Using single cell recording, di
