The significance of neural electrophysiological and functional effects of cervical spinal ganglia and sympathetic ganglia in cervical vertigo.

This study investigates the neural electrophysiological and functional effects of cervical spinal ganglia and sympathetic ganglia in cervical vertigo. Twenty-eight rabbits were randomized into superior cervical sympathetic ganglia (SCSG) group (n = 8), inferior cervical sympathetic ganglia (ICSG) group (n = 8) and control groups for both SCSG and ICSG (n = 6 each). Calcium indicator CaMPARI2 was injected into the ganglia. Four weeks later, both SCSG and ICSG groups underwent electrical stimulation followed by UV irradiation. Control groups did not receive electrical stimulation but were also i

[Neurotrophic interaction of spinal cord ganglia with different tissues].

Spinal ganglia L5-L6 together with mesocolon (innervated from these ganlia) and tongue epithelium were transplanted into the anterior chamber of the cat eye. In 2 months survival of some of the sensory neurons and intensive regeneration of their nerve fibers was observed. At the same time the mesocolon tissues with the mechanoreceptors (Pacinian corpuscles) were found to survive. Destruction of the tongue epithelium was revealed. The trophic effect of definite sensory ganglia on the tissue corresponding to them provided structural intactness of this tissue and of its receptor apparatus. It is

Veins of the lumbar spinal ganglia in human adults and fetuses.

To obtain a fundamental knowledge of the morphological relationship between nerve root symptoms and circulatory disorders, the distribution pattern of the veins in the lumbar spinal ganglia from the first to fifth vertebrae was investigated in 5 adult human cadavers (mean age 69.6 years) and 5 human fetuses (mean age 6.6 months). The following results were obtained: 1) In the adults the veins perforating from the outer surface of the fifth lumbar spinal ganglion were smaller in number than those perforating from the first to fourth ganglia. In contrast, in the fetuses the number of such veins

Calretinin-immunoreactive nerves in the uterus, pelvic autonomic ganglia, lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia and lumbosacral spinal cord.

Nerves containing the calcium-binding protein calretinin have been reported in several organs but not in female reproductive organs and associated ganglia. This study was undertaken to determine if nerves associated with the uterus contain calretinin and the source(s) of calretinin-synthesizing nerves in the rat (are they sensory, efferent, or both?). Calretinin-immunoreactive nerves were present in the uterine horns and cervix where they were associated with arteries, uterine smooth muscle, glands, and the epithelium. Calretinin-immunoreactive terminals were apposed to neurons in the paracerv

Basal ganglia hemorrhage in a case report following spinal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial hemorrhage is a rare but potentially severe complication of spinal surgery. Most reported post-operative ICH cases consist of cerebellar hemorrhage. There are fewer reported cases of supratentorial ICH following spinal surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman underwent spinal surgery complicated by bilateral supratentorial intraparenchymal basal ganglia hemorrhage with both intraventricular extension and subarachnoid hemorrhage in both cerebral hemispheres. CONCLUSION: The occurrence of neurological deterioration post-operatively following spinal surgery shoul

Friedreich Ataxia: Hypoplasia of Spinal Cord and Dorsal Root Ganglia.

After Friedreich's description in 1877, depletion of myelinated fibers in the dorsal columns, dorsal spinocerebellar and lateral corticospinal tracts, and neuronal loss in the dorsal nuclei of Clarke columns were considered unique and essential neuropathological features of Friedreich ataxia (FA). Lack of large neurons in dorsal root ganglia (DRG), thinning of dorsal roots (DR), and poor myelination in sensory nerves are now recognized as key components of FA. Here, we measured cross-sectional areas of the mid-thoracic spinal cord (SC) and neuronal sizes in lumbosacral DRG of 24 genetically co

Spinal cord injury leads to atrophy in pelvic ganglia neurons.

Among the most devastating sequelae of spinal cord injury (SCI) are genitourinary and gastrointestinal dysfunctions. Post-ganglionic neurons in pelvic ganglia (PG) directly innervate and regulate the function of the lower urinary tract (LUT), bowel, and sexual organs. A better understanding of how SCI affects PG neurons is essential to develop therapeutic strategies for devastating gastrointestinal and genitourinary complications ensuing after injury. To evaluate the impact of SCI on the morphology of PG neurons, we used a well- characterized rat model of upper thoracic SCI (T3 transection) th

Intrinsic circadian organization of the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia.

INTRODUCTION: Circadian rhythms coordinate daily fluctuations in physiology and behavior, yet their organization within primary sensory pathways remains poorly defined. Although somatosensory responsiveness varies across the day-night cycle, it is unclear whether peripheral sensory circuits possess molecular mechanisms for temporal regulation. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the spinal-peripheral sensory axis harbors intrinsic circadian clocks and to define the molecular scope and functional organization of circadian regulation in dorsal root ganglia (DRGs). METHODS: We used real-time biolu

Distribution of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in cranial and spinal ganglia.

In a previous study we have shown that a subpopulation of primary sensory neurons contain brain-derived neurotrophic factor immunoreactivity. In the present study we investigated the distribution of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and its mRNA in cranial and spinal ganglia at different segmental levels, using immunohistochemical and quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction techniques. Our results show that there is no significant difference in the percentage of brain-derived neurotrophic factor-immunoreactive neurons in spinal ganglia of different segmental levels. In con

Studies of herpes virus latency in the sensory spinal ganglia of rabbits.

Experimental latent herpes infection of rabbit dorsal root ganglia (DRG) is reported. The simian herpes virus used was derived from fatal natural infection in owl monkeys and has limited neurotropism in the rabbit. Following intradermal injection of the flank it causes a local lesion followed only by dorsal root ganglionitis; segmental paraesthesia and/or sensory loss going on to clinical recovery. Methods were developed for mapping sensory losses. Virus could be immediately re-isolated from skin or DRG homogenates in the acute (first week) stage but from 8-550 days by DRG organ culture only.

Effects of fasciculation on the outgrowth of neurites from spinal ganglia in culture.

This report describes the influence of neurite fasciculation on two aspects of nerve growth from chick spinal ganglia in vitro: the inhibition of outgrowth by high concentrations of nerve growth factor (NGF) and the preferential growth of neurites toward a capillary tube containing NGF. These studies involved a comparison of cultures of single cells, cell aggregates, and intact ganglia and the use of antibodies against the nerve cell adhesion molecule (CAM) to perturb fasciculation under a variety of conditions. The inhibition of outgrowth, which was observed with ganglia and aggregates but no

Intrinsic Circadian Organization of the Spinal Cord and Dorsal Root Ganglia.

Circadian rhythms coordinate daily fluctuations in physiology and behavior, yet their organization within primary sensory pathways remains poorly defined. Although somatosensory responsiveness varies across the day-night cycle, it is unclear whether peripheral sensory circuits possess molecular mechanisms for temporal regulation. Here, we demonstrate that the spinal-peripheral sensory axis harbors robust, tissue-autonomous circadian clocks. Using real-time bioluminescence imaging, we observed sustained oscillations of the core clock protein PER2 in the spinal dorsal horn and dorsal root gangli

Fibronectin expression in the developing human spinal cord, nerves, and ganglia.

AIM: Analysis of developmental role of fibronectin during differentiation of the human spinal cord, nerves, and ganglia. METHODS: Seven normal human embryos and fetuses between the 7th and 9th developmental week and a 9-week fetus with cervical spina bifida were histologically examined on hematoxylin and eosin stained serial paraffin sections of thoracic axial segments. Monoclonal antibody to the human cell fibronectin fragment was used for immunohistochemical detection of fibronectin. RESULTS: In the 7th and 8th week of development, fibronectin was weakly expressed in the ventricular and in

[State of the nerve cells of the cat spinal ganglia transplanted into the mesentery].

The survival of the mature differentiated neurons from the spinal ganglia under the conditions of autotransplantation into the colon mesentery of the cat was studied in chronic experiments. For two months, one-third of the neurons from the peripheral parts of the grafts survived and, as the normal ones, had a pseudounipolar form. However, their initial glomeruli had excessive overgrowth in the form of perivascular plexus, in its formation both the main axonal segment with its fine lateral branches and the finest offshoots from the neuronal bodies take part. These regenerating nerve fibres toge

A Case of Basal Ganglia Intraparenchymal Hemorrhage Following Lumbar Spinal Surgery.

We report on a rare case of basal ganglia intraparenchymal hemorrhage with intraventricular extension occurring after a lumbar spinal surgery. A 65-year-old female presented for an elective L4-L5 lumbar laminectomy and posterior spinal fixation. Her initial operation was complicated by a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak repaired with a dural synthetic graft. Her immediate post-operative course was complicated by delayed emergence, eye-opening apraxia, and left-sided hemiplegia and subsequent computed tomography (CT) of the head demonstrated a right-sided basal ganglia intraparenchymal hemorrhage

Altered functional properties of satellite glial cells in compressed spinal ganglia.

The cell bodies of sensory neurons in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) are enveloped by satellite glial cells (SGCs). In an animal model of intervertebral foraminal stenosis and low-back pain, a chronic compression of the DRG (CCD) increases the excitability of neuronal cell bodies in the compressed ganglion. The morphological and electrophysiological properties of SGCs were investigated in both CCD and uninjured, control lumbar DRGs. SGCs responded within 12 h of the onset of CCD as indicated by an increased expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the compressed DRG but to lesse

[Effect of epidural morphine anesthesia on NO-ergic activity of nociceptive neurons of spinal ganglia and spinal cord].

The effect of epidural morphine anesthesia on NO-ergic mechanisms was studied during primary and secondary sensitization. Nitro-oxide synthase (NOS) activity was evaluated by the method of Home and Vincent (1989) (identification of NADPH diaphorase). NOS and NADPH diaphorase are two double enzymes in cells with synchronously changing activity. NOS activity corresponds to the level of NO secretion. The enzyme was measured on a microdensitometer. The findings evidence active involvement of NO-ergic mechanisms in the formation of primary and secondary hyperalgesia, and injection of morphine cause
