Intraventricular ganglioglioma.

Gangliogliomas are mixed tumors consisting of both glial elements and differentiated neurons. Although any part of the central nervous system can be affected, little is known about intraventricular gangliogliomas. A patient with a ganglioglioma is presented in the previously unreported location of the anterior third ventricle at the foramen of Monro, mimicking a colloid cyst. We review all other reported cases of intraventricular ganglioglioma (n=6) to characterize this entity. Intraventricular gangliogliomas typically affect younger patients with female predominance (male:female, 2:5; median

Brainstem ganglioglioma.

Gangliogliomas are usually benign slow-growing neoplasms, seen mainly in the first 3 decades of life and are prevalently located supratentorial, mostly in the temporal and frontal lobe. The authors present a rare case of a brainstem ganglioglioma in an 11-year-old boy who was referred to their hospital complaining of episodes of blurry vision, loss of memory, gait disturbances, and morning headache with vomiting, lasting for over a month. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed a mass on the dorsal surface of the brainstem, compressing the brainstem and producing seco

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma.

Desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas are rare intracranial tumors that mostly occur in the first 2 years of life. They are exclusively supratentorial, generally have a voluminous size, and are partially cystic. Histologically they are characterized by a divergent astrocytic and ganglionic differentiation and a prominent desmoplastic stroma; more primitive cells may be observed, which present a higher number of mitoses and these areas can mimic the features of malignant astrocytomas. Surgery is the treatment of choice. Data available from the literature suggest that no complimentary treatment

Intracranial gangliogliomas.

Five cases of intracranial gangliomas in their clinical, diagnostic and surgical aspects are presented. In four cases we arrived at the diagnosis by CT-scan, which showed in all of them, calcified lesions without a mass effect. Total surgical resection was performed in four cases, and there is no evidence of recurrence either clinically or in the CT-scan after different follow-up periods. Although infrequent, these kinds of tumours should enter the differential diagnosis at any time when there a calcified mass exists in children or young patients with a long history of seizures. In our experie

Anaplastic ganglioglioma in children.

PURPOSE: Anaplastic gangliogliomas (AGG) are gangliogliomas with areas of pronounced hypercellularity, vascular proliferation, necrosis, and many mitotic figures. As very few pediatric patients have been studied, we analyzed the cases registered in the HIT-GBM database. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patient data were obtained from the German HIT-GBM database. Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of AGG proven by a central neuropathological review and patient age 0 to 17 years. Eight patients (five male and three female) were identified. RESULTS: Patients' median age was 10 years. The median history of

Tuberin expression in ganglioglioma.

The expression of tuberin in neurosurgically resected gangliogliomas was investigated. Neither neoplastic astrocytes nor abnormal, multipolar large neurons showed immunoreactivity for tuberin. The reduced immuno-histochemical staining for tuberin was consistent with the reduction observed in Western blot analysis. Eosinophilic granular bodies and Rosenthal fibers were strongly immunoreactive for tuberin. The accumulation of tuberin in astrocytes with intracellular degenerative changes suggests increased expression in reactive cells, and perhaps a broader role for tuberin in central nervous sys

Intraventricular ganglioglioma: case report.

We report a case of ganglioglioma located in the body and frontal horn of the right lateral ventricle. The lesion was found in a 71-year-old man who suffered from recurrent episodes of right hemicranial headache. CT and MRI showed a heterogeneous intraventricular tumour with multiple microcysts that suggested a diagnosis of subependymoma or central neurocytoma, but the pathological findings were consistent with ganglioglioma. Although the most frequent intracranial location of ganglioglioma is the temporal lobe, any location in the central nervous system may be seen. Nevertheless an exclusivel

Intraventricular Gangliogliomas: A Review.

OBJECTIVE: Gangliogliomas (GG) are benign, primary neoplasms most commonly noted in young adults. Intraventricular location is rare. We report a case of a multicentric intraventricular GG posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and in addition provide a detailed literature review of intraventricular GG. METHODS: A 15-year-old girl presented with features of raised intracranial pressure of short duration. Imaging revealed 2 separate lesions situated in the anterior and posterior third ventricle with hydrocephalus. The patient underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion, followed by exc

Ganglioglioma of the optic nerve.

We examined a 15-year-old boy who had a ganglioglioma involving the left optic nerve, which caused proptosis, decreased vision, and optic atrophy. Computed tomography demonstrated an intraconal mass along the course of the orbital portion of the optic nerve. The only evidence of systemic neurofibromatosis was axillary freckling. The patient underwent a combined medial and lateral orbitotomy and excision of the tumor. Histologic examination demonstrated a mass composed of neurons and glial cells characteristic of ganglioglioma. After a one-year follow-up period, we have found no evidence of rec

Gangliogliomas in the pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Gangliogliomas are neoplastic lesions composed by a mixed population of neoplastic glial and dysplastic neural cells. They represent around 5% of all CNS tumors in the pediatric population. These usually are well-differentiated, slow-growing tumors, meaning that complete resection could cure most of these patients. Although most lesions remain stable over time after incomplete resection, some patients develop progression of the residual lesions: the optimal approach to treat these tumors is still to be defined. METHODS: This is a retrospective study in which we obtained data from

[Ganglioglioma of the suprasellar region].

Ganglioglioma is a lesion rarely encountered in the suprasellar region. Here we present a case of suprasellar region ganglioglioma that was totally removed by surgery. The patient was a 15-year-old female who complained of seizure for about 1 year, polyuria and eyesight descent for about 6 months. The neurological examination was without positive findings except bi-papilledema. By MRI, a huge cystic mass lesion was found in the suprasellar region, which caused slight obstructive hydrocephalus. The size of the mass was determined to be 4 cm x 3 cm x 3 cm. The levels of GH, PRL, ACTH, TSH, LH, F

Sellar/Suprasellar Ganglioglioma: Clinical Image.

BACKGROUND: This report presents a rare presentation of a ganglioglioma in the sellar/suprasellar region. On the basis of the patient's presentation and imaging characteristics, the initial diagnosis was craniopharyngioma. While gangliogliomas are already rare brain tumors that are usually found in the frontal and temporal lobes of young patients, the presentation of this tumor in the sellar region is exceedingly rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 25-year-old male presented to the emergency department with headache, agitation, and combativeness. A head computed tomography scan showed a sellar/suprasel

Pediatric intracranial primary anaplastic ganglioglioma.

BACKGROUND: Primary intracranial anaplastic gangliogliomas are rare tumors in the pediatric patient group. Most of them present with symptoms of elevated pressure or symptomatic epilepsy. Extraaxial location is far more common than axial location. On MRI examination, they mimic pilocytic astrocytomas. The outcome after surgery depends mainly on the possible amount of surgical resection, and oncological therapy is necessary to prevent recurrence of the disease. CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old boy presented with headache and double vision due to obstructive hydrocephalus. MRI of the brain revealed

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma: case report.

Desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas are very rarely encountered, large supratentorial masses, derived from neuroepithelial origin, which have cystic and solid components and contain cells with astrocytic and ganglionic differentiation. These tumors are benign tumors of childhood that become symptomatic when they reach giant sizes. Sixty cases of desmoplastic ganglioglioma have been reported to date. In the present study, a case of giant desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma in a 22-month-old patient is presented, which had an aggressive radiological appearance in the midline and presented wit

MR of spinal cord ganglioglioma.

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to describe the MR imaging features in a series of spinal intramedullary gangliogliomas and to compare these findings with the MR features of intramedullary astrocytomas and ependymomas. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of 76 MR examinations in 27 patients with histologically proved spinal ganglioglioma; these were then compared with imaging findings in a representative sample of histologically proved spinal cord astrocytomas and ependymomas. RESULTS: Statistically significant observations regarding spinal gangliogliomas included young age of the patie

Ganglioglioma: 13 years of experience.

A 13-year retrospective review of 17 patients with gangliogliomas treated at the University of Iowa was conducted to investigate the association between tumor location, extent of resection, pathological findings, and patient prognosis. Thirteen were in the cerebral hemispheres and 4 in the midline. The mean ages at diagnosis and symptom onset were 16 and 8.8 years, respectively. The most common presenting symptom was seizures (11 patients); focal neurological deficit was seen in 5 patients and headache in 1. Patients with hemispheric tumors had an older age at time of diagnosis and a longer du

Ganglioglioma in the spinal cord of a steer.

An 18-mo-old Aberdeen Angus steer was unable to rise without assistance; and, when standing, the steer walked with flexed forelimbs. Due to the poor prognosis, it was euthanized and autopsied. Grossly, the cervical spinal cord was markedly enlarged at C5-C6 by a yellow, soft, well-demarcated nodule that affected ~70% of the parenchyma. Microscopically, the expansive, multinodular, unencapsulated neoplasm affected mostly the white matter and consisted of 2 distinct cell populations. Small, pleomorphic cells with scant cytoplasm predominated; nuclei were positive for oligodendrocyte transcriptio

Occipital ganglioglioma in an older adult.

Gangliogliomas are rare benign tumors of the central nervous system that typically involve the temporal lobe in younger patients. We present a 63-year-old man with an unusual occipital ganglioma with new seizures resolving after resection. A search of the literature revealed only three reports of occipital ganglioma in adults over 30 years old. Therefore, ganglioglioma of the occipital lobe in older patients is rare, but is a diagnostic consideration.

Temporal lobe gangliogliomas in children.

The ganglioglioma, a mixed tumor with neuronal and glial elements, occurs occasionally in children and young adults. Its incidence, clinical presentation, radiological features, and natural history have not been clearly defined. A review of 111 primary brain tumors treated at our institution shows that 9.0% were gangliogliomas. The temporal lobe was the most common site involved. All patients presented with seizures but were neurologically intact. The CT scan showed a partially calcified mass, frequently isodense or nearly so, with minimal enhancement. Complete removal produced dramatic improv
