Decoding workplace gaslighting: evaluating a Persian version of the gaslighting workplace scale.

BACKGROUND: Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse that undermines individuals' perception of reality through manipulation and often exploits power imbalances in relationships. This phenomenon is prevalent in nursing workplaces, where subtle bullying behaviors persist. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Workplace Gaslighting Scale in nursing context. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted online in 2025 on 306 nurses. The Gaslighting in the Workplace scale was translated using the forward-backward method. Validity (face, cont

Defining Medical Gaslighting-To Extinguish It.

The term medical gaslighting is increasingly recognised in the academic literature on chronic or contested illnesses, grounded in experiences of dismissal, invalidation, and inadequate care. Medical gaslighting has also gained prominence in public discourse, particularly on social media. However, the term has at times become conflated with other negative healthcare experiences, such as communication breakdowns or unmet patient expectations. Consequently, it remains unclear whether the phenomenon is consistently understood across contexts. Sensationalisation may have limited meaningful engageme

Some clinical consequences of introjection: gaslighting.

In the regression from the oedipal impulses some, perhaps many, people retreat to the introjective (oral) mode of defense. This and other defensive maneuvers culminate in a variety of behaviors which have been extensively and variously described in the literature. The authors describe, under the rubric of "gaslighting," an outcome of the introjective defense in which a victim and a victimizer join psychological modes in expressing and defending themselves against oral, incorporative impulses (greed), each in his or her own way.

Workplace gaslighting: a construct for organizational research.

Scholarly interest in gaslighting research has surged across various domains, particularly after it was named the word of the year in 2022. Despite growing research on the topic of gaslighting, the literature on workplace gaslighting remains limited, hindering the establishment of a clear, definitive concept. We review current scholarship on gaslighting through a systematic literature review and analyze definitions across various disciplines. The thematic analysis of definitions was used to delineate the attributes of the gaslighting phenomenon into necessary and contingent. We conceptualize t

Medical Gaslighting and Lyme Disease: The Patient Experience.

Even though there are approximately half a million new cases of Lyme disease in the US annually, according to the CDC, it is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, which can result in a chronic, multisystemic condition. Lyme disease is a recognized public health threat and is a designated "notifiable disease". As such, Lyme disease is mandated to be reported by the CDC. Despite this, both acute and chronic Lyme disease (CLD) have been relegated to the category of "contested illnesses", which can lead to medical gaslighting. By analyzing results from an online survey of respondents with Lyme diseas

Workplace gaslighting in nursing practice: a concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gaslighting is a subtle and insidious form of psychological abuse in the workplace that operates through the distortion or denial of reality and the induction of cognitive doubt, ultimately undermining individuals' confidence in their perceptions and professional judgment. Although the concept has gained increasing attention in organizational and psychological literature, gaslighting remains theoretically underdeveloped and conceptually ambiguous within nursing practice. It is frequently conflated with related phenomena such as workplace bullying, psychological violence, or incivil

Algorithmic gaslighting in healthcare: mechanisms, harms, and epistemic injustice in context.

Algorithmic systems are increasingly woven into healthcare, from triage applications to AI-enabled decision support tools. While such systems promise efficiency and diagnostic accuracy, they also perform a normative function: shaping whose knowledge is treated as credible, which symptoms matter, and how patient testimony is interpreted. This article introduces algorithmic gaslighting to name the patterned dynamic through which testimonial and hermeneutical injustices become recursively stabilized and internalized as patient self-doubt in algorithmically mediated clinical encounters. Building o

Defining Gaslighting in Gender-Based Violence: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review.

In both public and academic discourse, gaslighting has gained increased attention, especially regarding psychological abuse, power imbalance, and gender-based violence (GBV). However, the term gaslighting is often inconsistently defined and conflated with broader forms of manipulation. It is also largely examined in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV), which ignores its occurrence in other forms of GBV. The present study presents a systematic review that synthesizes interdisciplinary academic literature to create a comprehensive framework of gaslighting. This framework includes the

Hidden Harm in Young Relationships: Sociodemographic and Temporal Patterns of Gaslighting Exposure.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse that undermines trust in one's own judgment and memory. It has been linked to depression, anxiety, self-doubt and confusion. However, empirical evidence on the occurrence and characteristics of gaslighting exposure among young adults remains limited. This study examined gaslighting exposure among university students and its associations with sociodemographic factors and temporal characteristics (age at gaslighting experience and duration of exposure) using the Gaslighting Relationship Exposure Inventory (GREI). A total of 217 participants (127 local

Gaslighting and memory: the effects of partner-led challenges on recall and self-perception.

The global introduction of coercive control laws addressing patterns of psychological abuse in intimate partner violence has made it increasingly important to understand the cognitive impacts of tactics like gaslighting. Gaslighting directly targets cognitive processes involved in evaluating memories, potentially undermining victim-survivors' recollection, confidence, and self-trust, which are critical in forensic processes such as testimony. This study examined the effects of partner-led challenges on autobiographical memories within close relationships (i.e., friends and couples). It adapted

A historical review of gaslighting: Tracing changing conceptualizations within psychiatry and psychology.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation that causes a victim to doubt their sense of reality, usually leading to a loss of agency and emotional and mental instability. The phenomenon was identified over 50 years ago and discourse on the topic was largely confined to psychiatry; however, interest in gaslighting has experienced a resurgence with expansion both in terms of the contexts in which gaslighting is thought to occur as well as disciplines weighing in on the topic. The aim of this article is to offer a historical review of work on gaslighting that tracks how the term has evol

It's not a headache! It's a migraine: Exploring women's experiences of medical gaslighting in Ontario, Canada.

This study explores the experiences of women seeking diagnosis and treatment for migraine symptoms in Ontario, Canada, and contributes to the growing literature on the concept of medical gaslighting. Migraine patients, particularly women, often report feeling disempowered within medical settings, where their symptoms and concerns may be minimized or dismissed. In recent years, the term medical gaslighting has increasingly been used by patients and in the media to describe these types of experiences. Guided by a critical ethnographic approach, this study seeks to illuminate how gaslighting is e

Workplace Gaslighting Is Associated with Nurses' Job Burnout and Turnover Intention in Greece.

Νurses often experience abusive behavior, such as gaslighting, which has a negative impact on their mental health and leads them to quit their jobs. Background/Objectives: We evaluate the impact of workplace gaslighting on nurses' job burnout and turnover intention. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 410 nurses in Greece. We used the Gaslighting at Work Scale (GWS) to measure levels of workplace gaslighting in our sample. Also, we used the single-item burnout measure to measure job burnout and a six-point Likert scale to measure turnover intention. We co

Long COVID patients' reconstruction of medical gaslighting discourse in online epistemic communities.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse long COVID patients' reconstruction of medical gaslighting (MG) discourse in online epistemic communities in order to identify the MG types experienced and unfold root causes. METHOD: The mixed-methods of corpus‑based critical discourse analysis was applied to an ad hoc corpus of 18 threads (n = 1176 posts) from two sub-communities on the social media site Reddit. Comparative concordance analyses were performed on the two sub-corpora to semantically code concordance lines as MG types. Critical discourse analysis was conducted to uncover power/ideological drivers of MG di

From Gaslighting to Mistrust in Others: A Serial Mediation Model of Social Support and Self-Care.

Trust is a fundamental component of social life, yet it can be eroded by experiences of psychological abuse within intimate relationships. The present study examined whether exposure to gaslighting, a form of manipulation that undermines victims' perceptions of reality, reduces general trust in people and whether this association is mediated by social support and self-care practices. A convenience sample of 567 adults (aged 18-65) completed validated questionnaires assessing gaslighting experiences, trust, social support, and self-care. Results indicated that gaslighting was directly associate

Gaslighting Experience, Psychological Health, and Well-being: The Role of Self-Compassion and Social Support.

Gaslighting is an understudied form of psychological violence aimed to reduce victims' autonomy, decision-making ability, security, and belief in their own perceptions. Although it leads to negative psychological, relational, and health consequences, few studies have examined the protective variables of this form of violence. The present study aims to analyze the role of self-compassion and social support (from family, friends, and significant others) in predicting gaslighting experiences, psychological health, and eudaimonic well-being among young Italian women. The mediational role of the ga

Medical Gaslighting in Urban Healthcare: A Bioecological Framework for Health Equity and Participatory System Transformation.

Medical gaslighting describes patient experiences in which symptoms, concerns, or interpretations of illness are minimized, dismissed, or insufficiently recognized within healthcare encounters. While the term initially emerged from patient and community narratives, recent empirical and conceptual studies (2019-2024) have further documented patterns of diagnostic overshadowing, credibility deficits, and structural contributors to patient invalidation. These findings indicate that interpersonal dismissal often reflects broader organizational and systemic dynamics. This paper proposes a bioecolog

Reframing Patient and Parental Experience in Pediatric Healthcare: Medical Gaslighting as a Diagnostic Safety Vulnerability.

Medical gaslighting has emerged as a widely used term describing situations in which patients or caregivers perceive that their symptoms are minimized, dismissed, or prematurely attributed to psychological causes without adequate clinical evaluation. Although the term has gained prominence through patient narratives and public discourse, many of the underlying mechanisms correspond to well-established contributors to diagnostic error, including cognitive bias, communication failures, and diagnostic overshadowing. In pediatric care, these challenges are amplified because clinicians frequently r

From pain gaslighting to gender biases in women's accounts of hysteroscopy: A qualitative reflexive thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite being regarded as the gold standard, outpatient hysteroscopy (OPH) is associated with inconsistent outcomes and pain, while the clinical, organisational, and personal determinants shaping patient-centred experience remain poorly characterised. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to harness the authenticity and richness of naturally occurring online qualitative data to explore the clinical, organisational, and personal factors that shape women's hysteroscopy experiences, offering vital insights for service improvement. Gaslighting in parent-child relationships: Psychometric validation and longitudinal associations with depressive symptoms in Chinese samples.

BACKGROUND: Gaslighting is a covert form of psychological abuse involving persistent denial, distortion, or devaluation of victims' perceptions and memories, thereby undermining their sense of reality. Within the context of family abuse, the measurement applicability of existing gaslighting control instruments to parent-child relationships, as well as their developmental consequences and underlying mechanisms, remains insufficiently examined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (a) adapt and validate a measure of parental gaslighting for use in Chinese parent-child relationships and (b) examine th
