Pediatric gastrointestinal transit scintigraphy: From esophageal transit to whole-gut transit.

Pediatric gastrointestinal scintigraphy provides physiologic, quantitative, and clinically useful information for children with suspected motility disorders, feeding intolerance, reflux or aspiration, refractory constipation, and complex postsurgical anatomy. This review summarizes the role of esophageal transit scintigraphy, gastric emptying and gastroesophageal reflux scintigraphy, and small-bowel and colonic transit scintigraphy in children. These studies complement anatomic imaging, endoscopy, pH-impedance testing, and manometry by directly evaluating the movement of radiolabeled meals or

PIEZO2 in somatosensory neurons controls gastrointestinal transit.

The gastrointestinal tract is in a state of constant motion. These movements are tightly regulated by the presence of food and help digestion by mechanically breaking down and propelling gut content. Mechanical sensing in the gut is thought to be essential for regulating motility; however, the identity of the neuronal populations, the molecules involved, and the functional consequences of this sensation are unknown. Here, we show that humans lacking PIEZO2 exhibit impaired bowel sensation and motility. Piezo2 in mouse dorsal root, but not nodose ganglia is required to sense gut content, and th

Prokinetic effects of mirtazapine on gastrointestinal transit.

Mirtazapine is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of mirtazapine on gastrointestinal motility in dogs, including solid gastric emptying, antral and small intestinal contractions, and small intestinal and colonic transit. Six dogs were implanted with two cannulas located at the duodenum and the ascending colon; another six dogs were implanted with gastric cannula 6 cm proximal to the pylorus. Mirtazapine 45 mg was administered orally 90 min before the study. We found that 1) Mirtazapine accelerated gastric emptying duri

Gastrointestinal transit scintigraphy in the evaluation of rectocele.

AIM: Rectocele can cause chronic constipation and altered quality of life. In the presence of severe symptomatology and lack of response to conservative treatment, gastrointestinal motor function should be assessed. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of gastrointestinal transit scintigraphy in this pathology, analyzing its position in international guidelines. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated twelve women with rectocele and chronic constipation, range of 31-74 years, referred for scintigraphic study as an assessment prior to prolapse treatment. Defecography was

Gastrointestinal Transit Scintigraphy in a Case of Syringomyelia.

Syringomyelia is a rare degenerative disease affecting the spinal cord and brain stem causing progressive neurological dysfunction. The presence of gastrointestinal symptoms in these patients is common, although references related to nuclear medicine imaging procedures in this pathology are limited, focusing on the study of gastric emptying. We present a 47-year-old male patient diagnosed with syringomyelia and persistent digestive symptoms who underwent gastrointestinal transit scintigraphy to assess the extent of dysmotility. Liquid gastric emptying and small-bowel transit were normal. Large

Gastrointestinal transit times in young and old cats.

Ageing results in a decrease in apparent nutrient digestibility in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the rate of gastric emptying or total GI transit times differed between young (3.0+/-0.9 years) and senior (11.6+/-1. 4 years) cats. Gastric emptying rates were measured using [1-(13)C]octanoic acid and total transit times with chromium oxide. No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed in either the rate of gastric emptying or total transit time between young and senior cats although senior cats exhibited a larger variability in total trans

Gastrointestinal transit in children with chronic idiopathic constipation.

UNLABELLED: Chronic constipation in children is common and produces significant morbidity. Identification of the site of dysmotility in constipation may determine the cause and permit directed management. Scintigraphy differentiates constipated patients with anorectal hold-up from those with colonic slowing. Adults with colonic slowing demonstrate variation in the site of hold-up. However, in children with colonic slowing, variability in the site of hold-up has not been investigated. PURPOSE: The current study aimed to characterise colonic transit patterns in 64 children with chronic idiopath

Gastrointestinal transit after laparoscopic versus open colonic resection.

BACKGROUND: Multimodal rehabilitation with epidural analgesia, early oral nutrition and mobilization, and laxative use has decreased the duration of ileus after colonic surgery to about 2 days, as compared with the usual 3 to 5 days of rehabilitation required after open surgery and the slightly shorter time required with laparoscopic surgery. Gastrointestinal transit after colonic resection with laparoscopy or laparotomy was assessed. METHODS: In this study, 32 patients randomized to laparoscopic or open colonic resection received 4 MBq of 111indium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid, a trac

Stress effects on gastrointestinal transit in the rat.

Previous investigations of stress effects on gastric emptying, orocaecal, and colonic transit in rats have produced conflicting results. Here one type of stressor, a 'passive avoidance' situation, was used to investigate its effects on gastric emptying, orocaecal and colonic transit. After the rats had been trained to eat a standard amount of semisolid food, gastric emptying was determined (n = 12) by the food remaining in the stomach after various periods of rest, or stress exposure. Orocaecal transit (n = 14) was determined by breath hydrogen measurements after the food had been labelled wit

Effects of ramosetron on gastrointestinal transit of Guinea pig.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) type 3 receptor antagonist, ramosetron, inhibits stress-induced abnormal defecation in animals and is currently used as a therapeutic drug for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of ramosetron on altered gastrointestinal (GI) transit. METHODS: Male guinea pigs weighing approximately 300 g were used. The effect of ramosetron was investigated on altered GI transit induced by thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), 5-HT, or mustard oil (MO). GI transit was evaluated by the migration of cha

Effect of endotoxin on canine gastrointestinal motility and transit.

Ileus is common during sepsis; however, the etiology of this gastrointestinal dysmotility is unclear. The aim of our study was to determine the effects of a single, sublethal dose of endotoxin on canine gastrointestinal motility, gastric emptying, gastric acid secretion, and colonic transit. Six dogs underwent placement of manometric catheters in the stomach and small bowel and insertion of a gastric and a cecal cannula. After the animals recovered, fasting and fed gastrointestinal motility was recorded, and gastric emptying and colonic transit were studied with nonabsorbable liquid and solid

Gastrointestinal transit after spinal cord injury: effect of cisapride.

Heartburn, bloating, and abdominal discomfort are common problems in patients with spinal cord injury but, despite its clinical significance, little is known about the gastrointestinal effects of spinal transections. To address the potential gastrointestinal pathophysiology of spinal cord injury, we measured mouth-to-cecum transit time (MCTT) in seven subjects with paraplegia and seven with quadriplegia. Gastric emptying was studied in six subjects with quadriplegia. MCTT was significantly prolonged in patients with quadriplegia, an abnormality corrected by the administration of cisapride. Pat

Gastrointestinal transit of an osmotic tablet drug delivery system.

The gastrointestinal transit of a radiolabelled osmotic tablet drug delivery system has been monitored in groups of young and elderly healthy subjects, using gamma scintigraphy. The gastric emptying and small intestinal transit times were similar for both groups of subjects. The units were observed to move through the gastrointestinal tract at about the same rate as the released contents, arriving at the caecum on average 7 h after dosing. The data suggest that tablet adhesion to the mucosal surface is unlikely to be the mechanism responsible for the side effects reported for the indomethacin

Sex-Dependent Circadian Rhythm Impact on Murine Gastrointestinal Transit.

BACKGROUND: The circadian rhythm regulates gastrointestinal motility. In humans and preclinical models, such as rodents, whole gut transit (WGT) is slower during the rest phase compared to the active phase. Investigators typically study GI transit in rodents during the day, which is their rest phase, rather than during the night, which is their active phase. A circadian rhythm reversal in which mice are in a dark room during the working day (reverse light) allows studies on nocturnal animals during their active phase and has been previously shown to reduce WGT time. GI motility is often disrup

Regional gastrointestinal transit times in patients with chronic pancreatitis.

The mechanisms behind disrupted gastrointestinal (GI) motor function in patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP) have not been fully elucidated. We compared regional transit times in patients with CP to those in healthy controls, and investigated whether they were associated with diabetes mellitus, exocrine dysfunction, opioid treatment or quality of life. Twenty-eight patients with CP and 28 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were included. Regional GI transit times were determined using the 3D-Transit system, which consists of an ingestible electromagnetic capsule and a detector worn in
