Diseases of Gastropoda.

Gastropods (class Gastropoda) form the largest of the classes in the phylum Mollusca and inhabit terrestrial, fresh water and marine environments. A large number of these species are of major conservation importance and are an essential component of ecosystems. Gastropods may be deemed as pests, having a negative impact in horticulture and agriculture, whereas others may be used as a food source for human consumption and therefore are beneficial. Gastropods are susceptible to primary diseases and also act as intermediate hosts for diseases which affect other animals, including humans. The dise

The phylogeography of Indoplanorbis exustus (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) in Asia.

BACKGROUND: The freshwater snail Indoplanorbis exustus is found across India, Southeast Asia, central Asia (Afghanistan), Arabia and Africa. Indoplanorbis is of economic importance in that it is responsible for the transmission of several species of the genus Schistosoma which infect cattle and cause reduced livestock productivity. The snail is also of medical importance as a source of cercarial dermatitis among rural workers, particularly in India. In spite of its long history and wide geographical range, it is thought that Indoplanorbis includes only a single species. The aims of the present

A Rosetta Stone for eastern Pacific Caecidae (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda).

Nearly one hundred names have been proposed for Caecidae within the eastern Pacific. For the first time a comprehensive review of the extant members of Caecidae has been completed for this region. During this twelve year long deciphering effort, tens of thousands of specimens from Alaska to Chile were examined. All known type material was studied and whenever possible has been illustrated herein.                Whenever possible the descriptions include details of each growth stage from the protoconch through to the final adult stage. Then, the growth stages have been reconstructed to show wha

[Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Oncomelania hupensis (Gastropoda: Rissooidea)].

OBJECTIVE: To sequence and analyze the complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial genome of Oncomelania hupensis. METHODS: Four long fragments were amplified by long PCR using the primers designed based on mtDNA-CO I, Cytb, 16S rRNA and CO III gene sequences, and sequenced by conserved primer-walking. RESULTS: The mitochondrial genome (GenBank accession no. FJ997214) was a circular molecule of 15 182 bp with a total A+T content of 67.32%, and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and an A+T-rich region of 72 bp. All 13 protein-coding genes of the O.

Helicopsis persica n. sp. from northern Iran (Gastropoda: Geomitridae).

Helicopsis Fitzinger, 1833 is a mainly eastern European genus of the xerophilous Helicellinae (Geomitridae, Helicoidea; for family systematics see Razkin et al. 2015) that is characterized by two symmetrical dart and accessory sacs. This is probably the plesiomorphous character state within the Geomitridae and Hygromiidae. Therefore, the delimitation and relationships of Helicopsis remained questionable (Hausdorf 1996). Most Helicopsis species are characterized by a lateral attachment of the outer layer of the penial papilla at the penis wall so that a cavity is separated in the proximal part

Molecular phylogenetics of Triculine snails (Gastropoda: Pomatiopsidae) from southern China.

Triculine (Gastropoda: Rissooidea: Pomatiopsidae) snails are involved in the transmission of schistosomiasis and paragonimiasis; their distributions are mainly across southeastern Asia and southern China. In the present investigation, partial sequences of COI, 16S, and 28S were examined to infer the phylogenetic relationships among the species rich and poorly understood gastropod. Samples were collected from 12 geographic locations in six provinces of southern China. Several methods such as maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and distance analysis were used in phylogenetic analyses among the

Hydrobia ulvae (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia): a new model for regeneration studies.

Within 2 weeks of decapitation, Hydrobia ulvae was able to regenerate new head structures including buccal ganglia. It was also capable of regenerating propodial ganglia after anterior foot amputation. The functional regeneration of the buccal ganglia was demonstrated by behavioural observations and by electrophysiological experiments. The presence of the oesophagus was shown to be important for regeneration of the buccal complex. H. ulvae provides a new model for regeneration studies, so details of the topographic anatomy and biology of this species are described. To standardize experimental

A picorna-like virus associated with Galba truncatula (Gastropoda, Lymnaeidae).

Freshwater snails host diverse microorganisms, yet their viruses remain poorly documented. Here, we report the near-complete genome of a picorna-like virus associated with the freshwater snail Galba truncatula, recovered using metatranscriptomics. The 9,166-nt genome encodes structural and nonstructural polyproteins and provides a genomic resource for gastropod-associated viruses.

First confirmed report of Nassarius sinarum (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in Korea.

BACKGROUND: The marine gastropod mollusc Nassarius sinarum has attracted attention due to its status as a potential invasive species and the ecological impact it may have on local environments and the fishing industry. It was observed exclusively within China initially, but its distribution now seems to have expanded into Japan and Korea. Accurate identification of N. sinarum, particularly in its juvenile stage, is vital for understanding its ecological influences and distribution patterns. NEW INFORMATION: This study represents the first comprehensive analysis of N. sinarum samples from Kore

Comparative Morphology and Redescription of Pleurobranchus Species (Gastropoda, Pleurobranchoidea) from Brazil.

Juliana Alvim and Alexandre Dias Pimenta (2016) The taxonomy of Pleurobranchus from Brazil is little known because the internal anatomy and possible intraspecific variation are poorly understood. This study recognizes three valid species from Brazil: Pleurobranchus areolatus Mörch, 1863, P. iouspi Ev. Marcus, 1984 and P. reticulatus Rang, 1832. Pleurobranchus reticulatus and P. areolatus were misidentified for a long time because of their simple descriptions, without photographs of living animals. However, they are distinguished by: color of the rhinophores, P. reticulatus has a uniform color,

First occurrence of Schistosomatidae infecting Aplexa hypnorum (Gastropoda, Physidae) in France.

Due to the recrudescence of cercarial dermatitis in the world, larval Schistosomatidae have been researched during 20 months in gastropods of stagnant fresh waters in a wetland. Brevifurcate ocellate cercariae have been detected after crushing in a species of Physidae, Aplexa hypnorum, with a prevalence of 6.52%. Up to now, this species had never been found infected by larval trematodes. Lymnaeidae, Planorbidae and other Physidae didn't harbour schistosomatids. Cercariae of A. hypnorum present furcal fin-folds and the length of the tail stem is inferior to that of the body. Only cercariae of H

A New Species of Apple Snail in the Genus Pomacea (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda: Ampullariidae).

Pomacea canaliculata and Pomacea maculata, two species of freshwater apple snails native to South America, have been introduced to and become invasive in many tropical wetlands around the world. Among their invaded regions in mainland China, we discovered a new species (Pomacea occulta nov. sp.), which has > 5.8% inter-specific genetic divergence with its closely-related species. The present study provides a morphological description of this new species. This new species can be distinguished from the other recognized species of Pomacea by a combination of the following features: a thick shell

Mercury in sediments and Nassarius reticulatus (Gastropoda Prosobranchia) in the southern Venice Lagoon.

The southern basin of the Venice Lagoon has been the focus of fewer studies concerning contamination from heavy metals than the northern and central basins. A recent increase in urban waste waters from Chioggia town, as well as dockyards, shipping and fishing activities, affect this part of the lagoon. The aim of this study was to investigate the total mercury (THg) incidence in sediments and Nassarius reticulatus gastropods in order to assess its distribution and evaluate the level of contamination. THg concentration measured in bottom sediments ranged between 0.1 and 3.4 mg/kg d. wt. The enr

Increasing imposex in populations of Bolinus brandaris (Gastropoda: Muricidae) in the northwestern Mediterranean.

The muricid gastropod Bolinus brandaris exhibited imposex, a phenomenon linked to the use of organotin biocides. Several stages of imposex development (1-5) could be distinguished and were documented with SEM-photographs for the first time in this species. Additional alterations of the genital tract in females (blocked vulva preventing copulation and deposition of egg capsules) and males (excrecences on the penis and vas deferens) were shown. Imposex intensity on the Catalan coast was very high. The frequency of imposex off Barcelona and Vilanova i la Geltrú was 100%, with all females showing

Anesthesia of Biomphalaria spp. (Mollusca, Gastropoda): sodium pentobarbital is the drug of choice.

The anesthetic effect of some water-soluble anesthesic or narcotic drugs currently used in mice was tested in molluscs of the Biomphalaria genus. Sodium thiopental was very toxic to the snails resulting in high rates of mortality in all the treatment schedules tested. Cetamine base, at concentration of 0.25 mg/ml of water, resulted in partial snail anesthesia (40% of snails were anesthetized) only after 20 h of exposition. The association of Cetamine base with Tiazine chloridrate did not improve the anesthesic effect, and higher concentrations of these drugs were toxic to the snails. Sodium pe

Complete mitochondrial genome of the radicine pond snail Radix plicatula (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae).

Radix plicatula is broadly distributed in China, as well as Russia. It is one of the intermediate hosts of Fasciola species which leads to the spread of fascioliasis. Here, we first described the complete mitochondrial genome of R. plicatula. The mitogenome is 13,751 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes. The contents of each base are 30.7% A, 39.6% T, 15.7% G, and 13.9% C. The sequence is AT rich (70.3%). Mitochondrial phylogenomic analysis showed that R. plicatula is close to R. auricularia.

A phylogeny for the pomatiopsidae (Gastropoda: Rissooidea): a resource for taxonomic, parasitological and biodiversity studies.

BACKGROUND: The Pomatiopsidae are reported from northern India into southern China and Southeast Asia, with two sub-families, the Pomatiopsinae (which include freshwater, amphibious, terrestrial and marine species) and the freshwater Triculinae. Both include species acting as intermediate host for species of the blood-fluke Schistosoma which cause a public health problem in East Asia. Also, with around 120 species, triculine biodiversity exceeds that of any other endemic freshwater molluscan fauna. Nevertheless, the origins of the Pomatiopsidae, the factors driving such a diverse radiation and

Morphological and molecular characterization of Neotropic Lymnaeidae (Gastropoda: Lymnaeoidea), vectors of fasciolosis.

Lymnaeidae play a crucial role in the transmission of fasciolosis, a disease of medical and veterinary importance. In the Neotropic, a region where fasciolosis is emergent, eight Lymnaeidae species are currently considered valid. However, our knowledge of the diversity of this taxon is hindered by the fact that lymnaeids exhibit extremely homogeneous anatomical traits. Because most species are difficult to identify using classic taxonomy, it is difficult to establish an epidemiological risk map of fasciolosis in the Neotropic. In this paper, we contribute to our understanding of the diversity
