This study analyzed the determinants of gender-based violence (GBV) in Ecuador using microdata from the National Survey on Family Relations and Gender Violence against Women. Binomial logit models estimated the probability of women experiencing any type of GBV and each type (psychological, physical, sexual, or economic and patrimonial). Results showed that childhood and adolescent violence experiences and partner-related conflicts were among the strongest predictors of women's likelihood of experiencing GBV, while gender roles and decision-making attitudes had a significant influence. Using Multicultural and Gender Case Conceptualization (MGCC) epistemology, the aim of this phenomenological study was to explore adult male victims' perceptions of gender and reflections on their experiences of gender-based violence (GBV). Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results indicated that, regardless of sexual orientation, participants experienced verbal and physical abuse due to their feminine gender expression, beginning in primary school and continuing through university and into the workplace. To reduce victimization, the men developed a range

Gender-based violence takes different forms like physical, sexual or psychological/ emotional violence. The causes of gender-based violence are multidimensional including social, economic, cultural, political and religious. The literatures written in relation to the gender-based violence are accessed using electronic databases as PubMed, Medline and Google scholar

Online violence against women (OVAW) is a growing global problem with deepfakes in gender-based violence as one manifestation of this that has recently attracted considerable attention. This scoping review aims to explore emerging complexities in current academic understandings of deepfake in relation to its use in gender-based violence. The review considers how these issues impact and shape what is currently known about deepfakes in relation to OVAW. Articles were collected between July and September 2024 and then filtered drawing on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Me

In this article, we describe the dataset on the conditions for gender-based violence (GBV) for women in four municipalities of Colombia: Cali, Buenaventura, Jamundí, and Yumbo. The database was developed by the Observatory for Women's Equity (OEM), an entity resulting from an alliance between Universidad Icesi and Fundación WWB Colombia. The OEM's purpose is to construct measurements that make it possible to account for GBV suffered by women. The following types of violence were classified: psychological violence, physical violence, sexual violence, workplace violence, and economic violence. I

Spatially concentrated policing practices play a key role in the public face of mass incarceration, prompting inquiry into potential negative impact on rates of gender-based violence (GBV) in targeted communities. Using administrative data on police encounters (stops, use of force, and violence) and GBV incidents in New York City, linear regression shows that spatially clustered police encounters predict higher GBV rates, with stronger effects as police use of force intensifies. Community racial composition moderates this relationship such that the association between police use of force and G

This study examined the prevalence and perception of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and factors associated with GBV among in-school Ethiopian adolescents. This cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in Addis Ababa with 1,014 male and female adolescents aged 15-19. We examined differences by sex using the two-sample test of proportions and used multiple regression models to identify factors associated with GBV. Male respondents reported higher acceptability of GBV, while the overall mean empowerment construct was higher among females. Older adolescents (AOR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.21, 1.69) and

Activists play a crucial, yet under-examined, role in challenging the discourses that normalize gender-based violence in Canada. This article draws on semi-structured interviews with 13 diverse leading activists to explore the intra-community stressors they face. Adopting an intersectional lens, it examines the emotional, physical, interpersonal, and structural challenges that arise from limited funding, competition, and addressing a challenging topic (GBV). Many activists are also survivors navigating personal trauma. Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) participants report additio

The aim of this research is to understand how gender-based violence across the life-course affects the likelihood of abortion. Women outpatients (n = 309) revealed their exposure to four different forms of gender-based abuse: child sexual abuse (25.7 percent), teenage physical dating violence (40.8 percent), intimate partner violence (43.1 percent), and sexual assault outside an intimate relationship (22 percent). Logistic regressions revealed that no single form of gender-based abuse predicted abortion. The cumulative effect of multiple forms of abuse did increase the odds of having an aborti

The lack of acknowledgment of children as victims of gender-based violence hinders the support they receive. This study aimed to identify the psychological consequences of children's exposure to gender-based violence and gaps in knowledge. This work used a scoping review approach, based on the PRISMA quality criteria. The search was conducted in the 14 databases included in the Web of Science platform. A total of 13 open-access articles published in English between 2015 and 2025 that focus on gender-based violence psychological consequences in children met the inclusion criteria. The results o

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) particularly against women is unfortunately common during armed conflicts. No rigorous and comprehensive empirical work has documented the extent of GBV and its consequences that took place during the two years of devastating armed conflict in Northern Ethiopia. This study aims to assess GBV and its consequences in war-torn areas of northern Ethiopia.
METHODS: We used a qualitative method augmented by quantitative method to enroll research participants. We conducted in-depth interviews to characterize the lived experiences of GBV survivors. All intervie

Foreign bodies (FBs) are routinely introduced into the breast for surgical intervention. A bizarre FB of the breast may result from physical trauma secondary to abuse. We report on a 34-year-old female who presented with a metal FB in the right breast and a suspicious history, which raised concern for gender-based violence (GBV). Traumatic breast injuries are relatively rare. A high index of suspicion is important when dealing with unusual breast injuries in order to investigate these appropriately and rule out abuse.

Despite legislation, dowry is still widespread in many parts of India and adjacent countries. It refers to the transfer of goods, money, and property to a bridegroom, his parents, or his relatives from a bride's family as a condition of the marriage. One of the consequences of the dowry system has been the murder or abetted suicide of young wives, either because more dowry goods were not provided to her husband or his family, or to secure the goods after marriage. In 2015 7634 women died due to dowry harassment, representing approximately 21 cases per day in India. The majority of dowry deaths

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Gender-based violence (GBV) has long-term devastating effects on psychological health, resulting in depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. Beyond physical and mental health symptoms, GBV can affect survivors on many personal, social, and spiritual levels, impacting their ability to connect to themselves, others, and the world around them. While most research on recovery following GBV has focused on recognizing factors associated with distress or adverse outcomes, there is limited information about how they recover. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS

Being exposed to childhood or gender-based violence is associated with subsequent adverse events in individual lives. Not only can it cause psychological distress but violence survivors suffer from a range of long-term adverse health outcomes, including higher morbidity, higher mortality, and higher risk of chronic diseases. Epigenetics may be involved in the determinisms of these long-term detrimental effects. A large body of evidence supports this biological mechanism to explain violence-related health impairment in the long term. However, studies specifically focusing on violence are scant

The intensity and frequency of extreme weather and climate events are expected to increase due to anthropogenic climate change. This systematic review explores extreme events and their effect on gender-based violence (GBV) experienced by women, girls, and sexual and gender minorities. We searched ten databases until February, 2022. Grey literature was searched using the websites of key organisations working on GBV and Google. Quantitative studies were described narratively, whereas qualitative studies underwent thematic analysis. We identified 26 381 manuscripts. 41 studies were included explo
