Measuring gene flow between malaria parasite populations in different geographic locations can provide strategic information for malaria control interventions. Multiple important questions pertaining to the design of such studies remain unanswered, limiting efforts to operationalize genomic surveillance tools for routine public health use. This report examines the use of population-level summaries of genetic divergence (FST) and relatedness (identity-by-descent) to distinguish levels of gene flow between malaria populations, focused on field-relevant questions about data size, sampling, and in

The generation and maintenance of biodiversity are driven by population divergence and speciation. We investigated divergence, gene flow, and speciation in Beringia, a region at the top of the North Pacific Ocean with a history of dramatic landscape alteration through Pleistocene glacial cycles. These cycles repeatedly split and connected the Asian and North American continents, separating and reconnecting avian populations. Glacial refugia within Beringia also isolated some populations for a time before potentially enabling them to reunite during interglacial periods. Prior work suggests gene

Ring species are groups of organisms that dispersed along a ring-shaped region in such a way that the two ends of the population that meet after many generations are reproductively isolated. They provide a rare opportunity to understand the role of spatial structuring in speciation. Here, we simulate the evolution of ring species assuming that individuals become sexually isolated if the genetic distance between them is above a certain threshold. The model incorporates two forms of dispersal limitation: exogenous geographic barriers that limit the population range and endogenous barriers that r

Future progress in genetic improvement and the monitoring of genetic resources in beef cattle requires a detailed understanding of the population under selection. This study examines the gene flow in the UK beef population with an uncommon breeding structure involving interaction between the beef and dairy populations. British Cattle Movement Service records were used as the primary source of information, and these data were triangulated with UK government statistics, other industry information sources and existing literature to build up a profile of the UK beef industry. Estimates were made o

Species delimitation is a fundamental challenge in systematic biology, particularly for geographically variable taxa with hierarchical population structure and gene flow. Gene flow can obscure signals of lineage divergence and blur species boundaries, motivating the use of migration-aware coalescent models to investigate divergence processes and delimit species. In this study, we combine the use of such models with phylogenetic and population structure analyses to delimit species of fence lizards within the Sceloporus undulatus complex, a group with a broad distribution across North America ch

Haplotypes linked to the HBB*S gene were analyzed in a sample of 260 chromosomes of Brazilian sickle cell anemia patients from the population of Belém, state of Pará, to evaluate if the present-day haplotype frequencies correlate as well as expected with historical information on the geographic origin of African slaves sent directly to Northern Brazil. The HBB*S gene haplotype distribution (66% Bantu, 21.8% Benin, 10.9% Senegal, and 1.3% Cameroon) is in agreement with those observed for other Brazilian populations regarding the highest proportion of the Bantu type, followed by the Benin type,

AbstractSpecies are restricted to finite ranges, and when they are in demographic equilibrium with the environment, this implies a failure to adapt at the range periphery. There are several competing evolutionary hypotheses for the maintenance and persistence of range edges. One hypothesis is gene swamping of edge populations, in which migrants from the center carrying alleles adapted to the range center but maladaptive along the edge hamper local adaptation. A competing explanation is dispersal limitation, in which reduced migration to the periphery keeps edge populations small, causing drift

Calomys musculinus is a Sigmodontinae rodent inhabiting periodically disturbed habitats in the central eastern plains of Argentina. It is the natural reservoir host of Junin virus, the etiological agent of Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever (AHF). In order to analyze the levels of gene flow among populations of this species, allozymic variability at 26 loci was studied in 291 individuals from the endemic zone of AHF and localities outside it. All populations showed high levels of polymorphism (He between 0.107 and 0.144; P95% between 38 and 54%). Individual loci f values were in most cases negative,

Estimating malaria parasite migration is crucial for informing elimination strategies, particularly by identifying regions with higher parasite migration that may serve as transmission sources and intervention targets. Methods that infer spatial variations in gene flow from georeferenced genetic data, including Estimated Effective Migration Surfaces (EEMS) and related approaches such as estimating Migration And Population-size Surfaces (MAPS), have become widely used to visualize barriers and corridors of organism movement. However, when sampling locations are sparse or unevenly distributed, s

We describe patterns of genotypic and phenotypic variation in saddle-back tamarin (Saguinus fuscicollis) populations along the central and upper Rio Juruá, western Brazilian Amazonia. The genetic data are sequence haplotypes of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene; phenotypic data are pelage colour variants that define sharply demarcated subspecies of this extremely variable tamarin species. We show that gene flow occurs between adjacent subspecies, but that this phenomenon is restricted to the headwater section of the river, which is consistent with expectations from the riverine barrier hypot

Urban fragmentation can reduce gene flow that isolates populations, reduces genetic diversity and increases population differentiation, all of which have negative conservation implications. Alternatively, gene flow may actually be increased among urban areas consistent with an urban facilitation model. In fact, urban adapter pests are able to thrive in the urban environment and may be experiencing human-mediated transport. Here, we used social network theory with a population genetic approach to investigate the impact of urbanization on genetic connectivity in the Western black widow spider, a

Blow flies of the genus Chrysomya are among the earliest colonizers of human remains and are important forensic indicators in Africa and the Middle East. However, the population genetic structure of Old World Chrysomya species in North Africa remains poorly understood. We conducted the first amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP)-based population genetic analysis of Chrysomya albiceps and Chrysomya marginalis in Egypt to assess geographic and temporal structure and to evaluate their forensic utility for population assignment. Adult flies were collected from multiple localities in Egypt

Enzyme polymorphism was studied by means of starch gel electrophoresis on five population samples of Calomys laucha collected in different sites and seasons. C. laucha, a cricetid rodent inhabiting preferentially cultivated fields in the central-eastern plains of Argentina, is a reservoir-host of Junin virus, agent of Argentine hemorrhagic fever. Results show high levels of genic variability in all the samples (P from 62.50 to 77.27; H from 0.118 to 0.163) and low genetic distance among populations (D from 0.0024 to 0.0167). Estimations of gene flow (mean Nm = 10.78) indicate a high migration

The evolutionary origins of asexuality remain poorly understood, despite extensive research on its ecological and evolutionary consequences. Asexuality often arises through hybridization between species with intermediate genomic divergence, implying that hybrid-induced asexuality may be partly repeatable. The Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa), the first asexual vertebrate known to science, challenges this view: repeated experimental crosses between its extant parental species have failed to recreate a stable Amazon molly-like lineage. This apparent paradox gave rise to the Rare Formation Hypothe

In order to study the origin of mutation HBB*S in Sucre and Anzoátegui states and the genetic affinities of these Venezuelan populations with other human groups, the beta-globin gene cluster haplotypes were determined for 28 sickle cell and/or S-beta thalassemia patients and for 37 individuals with normal hematological parameters. Bantu, Benin, Senegal, and atypical haplotypes were identified in 50%, 36%, 2%, and 12% of the HBB*S chromosomes, respectively. Similar results have been published for Venezuelan patients from the central states, but a different trend is shown in a publication based

BACKGROUND: Leishmania infantum is the causative agent of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean region, South America, and China. MON-1 L. infantum is the predominating zymodeme in all endemic regions, both in humans and dogs, the reservoir host. In order to answer important epidemiological questions it is essential to discriminate strains of MON-1.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We have used a set of 14 microsatellite markers to analyse 141 strains of L. infantum mainly from Spain, Portugal, and Greece of which 107 strains were typed by MLEE as MON-1. The highly variable

Local adaptation at fine spatial scales depends on whether selection can maintain trait divergence despite ongoing gene flow, yet the spatial scale at which this occurs remains poorly resolved in natural populations. Heterogeneous landscapes containing geographically proximate populations provide natural experiments to test how gene flow and selection jointly shape adaptive divergence. We studied 12 annual populations of Mimulus guttatus distributed across two nearby ridges in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, USA, and combined field fitness estimates, common garden phenotyping, and genome-wide

Local adaptation refers to the evolutionary process whereby organisms become better suited to their local environmental conditions, resulting in higher fitness. However, patterns of gene flow among Taxus species and their capacity for local adaptation across current and future climatic landscapes remains unclear. Here, we analyzed dd-RAD sequencing data from 252 individuals from three Taxus species to identify their genetic structure and gene flow patterns, identify climate-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the genome, and predict their spatio-temporal shifts under futur
