Stimulus generalization of schedule-induced polydipsia.

Five rats were exposed to an intradimensional discrimination by associating two tones of different frequency with the components of a multiple random-time 30-sec, extinction schedule of food presentation. After schedule-induced polydipsia developed and the intermittent schedule of food presentation established stable differential licking rates during the stimuli associated with the multiple schedule, a stimulus generalization test was conducted. When generalization testing was conducted by presenting stimuli that varied on the frequency dimension during the random-time 30-sec component of the

An attempt to replicate action-effect learning and its generalization without stimulus-stimulus learning.

In everyday life, we often generalize previously learned associations between our actions and their outcomes to novel, but similar situations. The present study aimed to conceptually and directly replicate results reported by Esser et al. (Psychological Research, 87(7), 2249–2258 2023), who reported that action–effect (A–E) learning generalizes to categorically similar stimuli. Yet, the overall picture in the published literature is not overwhelming with regard to such generalization, and hence a replication seems to be of particular importance. We present three experiments. In our conceptual

Discriminative stimulus effects of pentobarbital in rhesus monkeys: tests of stimulus generalization and duration of action.

Rhesus monkeys were trained to emit 20 or 30 consecutive responses on one lever following an IM injection of pentobarbital (10 or 18 mg/kg) and the same number of consecutive responses on another lever following an injection of saline. The required number of correct consecutive responses in both cases resulted in food delivery. When responding was reliably under the control of the presession injection, the ability of a variety of other compounds to produce pentobarbital-appropriate responding was examined. Diazepam, clobazam, methohexital, pentobarbital, and phenobarbital, given 10 or 20 min b

Fear conditioning and stimulus generalization in patients with social anxiety disorder.

Although overgeneralization seems to be a hallmark of several anxiety disorders, this until now has not been investigated in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Therefore, we examined fear generalization in 26 SAD patients and 29 healthy controls (HC) using two faces as conditioned stimuli (CS+, CS-), and a loud scream and a fearful face as unconditioned stimulus (US). Generalization was tested by presenting both CS and four morphs of the two faces (generalization stimuli [GSs]), while ratings, heart rate (HR) and skin conductance responses (SCR) were recorded. Results revealed that SAD patients ra

Discrimination training affects stimulus generalization in mice during Pavlovian eyeblink conditioning.

The delicate balance between discrimination and generalization of responses is crucial for survival in our ever-changing environment. In particular, it is important to understand how stimulus discrimination affects the level of stimulus generalization. For example, when we use non-differential training for Pavlovian eyeblink conditioning to investigate generalization of cerebellar-related eyelid motor responses, we find generalization effects on amount, amplitude and timing of the conditioned responses. However, it is unknown what the generalization effects are following differential training.

Assessment of stimulus generalization gradients in the treatment of self-injurious behavior.

Descriptive and experimental analyses suggested that the self-injurious behavior (SIB) of a 10-year-old girl with severe mental retardation was maintained by attention. Additional analyses identified physical contact as the type of attention maintaining SIB; therefore, we hypothesized that physical proximity of an adult was a discriminative stimulus for SIB. Based on these findings, we systematically varied the distance between the participant and a therapist to assess stimulus generalization. Results showed that rates of SIB varied relative to the distance between the participant and therapis

Noribogaine generalization to the ibogaine stimulus: correlation with noribogaine concentration in rat brain.

The discriminative stimulus effects of ibogaine and noribogaine in rats have been examined in relation to their concentrations in blood plasma and brain regions and to receptor systems through which they have been proposed to act. Rats were trained to discriminate ibogaine (10 mg/kg i.p.), the NMDA antagonist dizocilpine (0.08 mg/kg i.p.) or the kappa-opioid agonist U50,488 (5 mg/kg i.p.) from vehicle in a standard two-lever operant conditioning procedure with a tandem VI-FR schedule of food reinforcement. Only rats trained on ibogaine generalized to noribogaine, which was approximately twice

Inverse agonist properties of the THBC discriminative stimulus: asymmetrical generalization with FG 7142.

Male rats were trained to discriminate the stimulus properties of the beta-carbolines 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline (THBC) (15.0 mg/kg) or FG 7142 (5.0 mg/kg) from vehicle in a two-lever, food-motivated operant task. Consistent with the serotonergic properties of THBC, administration of the 5HT1B agonists TFMPP and mCPP to THBC-trained rats resulted in THBC-appropriate responding. Norharmane, a beta-carboline metabolite of THBC, also mimicked the THBC discriminative stimulus. In contrast, the benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonist FG 7142, the anxiogenic/convulsant pentylenetetraz

Assessment of reduction in stimulus generalization of ethanol-seeking during recovery: A rapid procedure.

Previously, we developed a procedure which showed that longer histories of reinforced alternative behavior decrease the risk of relapse caused by a range of stimuli which had previously occasioned drinking. The decrease in relapse risk was likely due to a decrease in attention to the stimuli over the course of repeated engagement in the alternative behavior. However, this previous procedure was time consuming and did not mirror the procedure we used to observe changes in relapse risk. This study aimed at replicating the previous relationship between the duration of engaging in an alternative b

The Effect of Stimulus Variability on Learning and Generalization of Reading in a Novel Script.

PURPOSE: The benefit of stimulus variability for generalization of acquired skills and knowledge has been shown in motor, perceptual, and language learning but has rarely been studied in reading. We studied the effect of variable training in a novel language on reading trained and untrained words. METHOD: Sixty typical adults received 2 sessions of training in reading an artificial script. Participants were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: a variable training group practicing a large set of 24 words, and 2 nonvariable training groups practicing a smaller set of 12 words, with twice the number of re

The contribution of latent inhibition to reduced generalization after pre-exposure to the test stimulus.

Two experiments assessed the contribution of latent inhibition to the generalization-reducing effects of pre-exposure to the test stimulus using a taste aversion procedure in rats. In both experiments, lithium chloride induced illness was paired with a flavor compound (AX) of either salt or sugar (A or B) and hydrochloric acid (X). Generalization of the resulting aversion to a test compound (BX), was assessed after varying pre-exposure to BX, X, and B. Experiment 1 showed that generalization to BX was less when BX itself had been exposed than equivalent pre-exposure to either B and X separatel

Discriminative stimulus control by the anxiogenic beta-carboline FG 7142: generalization to a physiological stressor.

Drug discrimination was employed to investigate the similarities between FG 7142-induced anxiogenesis and the stress produced by exposure to either a novel environment or to footshock. Eight rats were trained to discriminate between the stimulus properties of the beta-carboline FG 7142 (5.0 mg/kg) and its vehicle in a two-lever, food motivated operant task. Once trained, decreasing doses of FG 7142 produced fewer FG 7142-appropriate responses and the dose-response relationship yielded an ED50 of 1.45 mg/kg. Rats were subsequently subjected to two physiological/environmental stressors, footshoc

Effects of stimulus mode on the acquisition, transfer, and generalization of categories by severely mentally retarded children and adolescents.

The effects of object training and photograph training on comprehension of category labels by severely mentally retarded children were explored. Relatively simple tasks (acquisition of trained examples and transfer between modes) and relatively difficult tasks (generalization to novel examples in the training mode and in the other mode) were both included. Results indicated that acquisition and transfer did not differ, yet generalization was significantly more accurate with objects than with photographs. Furthermore, generalization was significantly above chance for objects but not for photogr

Generalization of naming responses to objects in the natural environment as a function of training stimulus modality with retarded children.

Picture-cards, photographs, and real objects were compared as training stimuli in order to determine which best facilitated the generalization of naming responses learned in a special training room to real objects in the natural environments of four retarded children. The amount of transfer of naming behavior between the three stimulus modes and the average amount of training time required per stimulus mode were also assessed. Three of the four children displayed considerably more generalization to the real objects in the natural environment when they were trained with real objects. The fourth

Stimulus class formation and concept learning: establishment of within- and between-set generalization and transitive relationships via conditional discrimination procedures.

Three students with moderate mental retardation were taught a complex stimulus class with a two-choice conditional discrimination procedure applied across eight 10-member stimulus sets. Each set was composed of five age-appropriate and five age-inappropriate examples of clothing, accessories, and leisure items (e.g., a Walkman radio). Discrimination training was programmed serially across each set, and generalization probes were conducted concurrently among all sets. Generalization probes consisted of unreinforced conditional matching trials with comparison items being drawn from (a) the set u

The effect of tDCS on recognition depends on stimulus generalization: Neuro-stimulation can predictably enhance or reduce the face inversion effect.

This article reports results from three experiments that investigate how a particular neuro-stimulation procedure is able, in certain circumstances, to selectively increase the face inversion effect by enhancing recognition for upright faces, and argues that these effects can be understood in terms of the McLaren-Kaye-Mackintosh (MKM) theory of stimulus representation. We demonstrate how a specific transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) methodology can improve performance in circumstances where error-based salience modulation is making face recognition harder. The 3 experiments used an

Salvinorin B derivatives, EOM-Sal B and MOM-Sal B, produce stimulus generalization in male Sprague-Dawley rats trained to discriminate salvinorin A.

Salvinorin A, the main active component of Salvia divinorum, is a potent and selective κ opioid receptor agonist. Synthetic derivatives of this substance may be useful in the development of medicinal treatments for pain, mood disorders, and drug dependence. Such developments require extensive preclinical screening of these compounds. The drug discrimination assay is a valuable method for exploring potential similarities between novel compounds and known drugs of abuse with respect to their interoceptive stimulus properties, and can be used to investigate the potency of salvinorin A and its der
