Plant sex determination involves the integration of genetic networks, hormonal signaling and environmental cues. This review synthesizes current understanding, highlighting two conserved pathways for unisexual flower formation: Type I (post-initiation organ abortion) and Type II (primordial suppression). Floral organ identity is genetically orchestrated by the ABCDE model and specific sex-determining genes. The core hormonal mechanism centers on antagonistic interactions between gibberellin (promoting male) and ethylene (promoting female), mediated by regulators like DELLA and EIN3/EIN2. These

Human macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an inflammatory cytokine with chemokine-like characteristics and an upstream regulator of host innate immunity. It is a critical mediator of a variety of human diseases, such as acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, autoimmunity, atherosclerosis, and cancer. MIF is an atypical chemokine that not only signals through its cognate receptor CD74, but also interacts with the classical chemokine receptors CXCR2 and CXCR4. MIF and its homolog D-dopachrome tautomerase (D-DT)/MIF-2 are structurally unique proteins that are conserved across kingdo

The intensive use of antibiotics for human, veterinary and agricultural purposes, results in their continuous release into the environment. Together with antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are introduced into wastewater. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are believed to be probable hotspots for antibiotic resistance dissemination in the environment as they offer convenient conditions for ARB proliferation as well as for horizontal transfer of ARGs among different microorganisms. In fact, genes conferring resistance to all classes of antibi

We report the identification of novel defence genes in canola by using a cDNA microarray from Arabidopsis. We examined changes that occur in the abundance of transcripts corresponding to 2375 Arabidopsis expressed sequence tags (selected for defence gene identification) following inoculation of canola plants with the fungal necrotrophic leaf pathogen, Alternaria brassicicola. Microarray data obtained from this cross-hybridisation experiment were compared to expression profiles previously obtained from the equivalent Arabidopsis experiment. Homology searches using a canola expressed sequence ta

Cryptococcus neoformans is a major opportunistic fungal pathogen. Like many dimorphic fungal pathogens, C. neoformans can undergo morphological transition from the yeast form to the hypha form, and its morphotype is tightly linked to its virulence. Although some genetic factors controlling morphogenesis have been identified, little is known about the epigenetic regulation in this process. Proteins with the plant homeodomain (PHD) finger, a structurally conserved domain in eukaryotes, were first identified in plants and are known to be involved in reading and effecting chromatin modification. BACKGROUND: Synaptotagmin genes are found in animal genomes and are known to function in the nervous system. Genes with a similar domain architecture as well as sequence similarity to synaptotagmin C2 domains have also been found in plant genomes. The plant genes share an additional region of sequence similarity with a group of animal genes named FAM62. FAM62 genes also have a similar domain architecture. Little is known about the functions of the plant genes and animal FAM62 genes. Indeed, many members of the large and diverse Syt gene family await functional characterization. Understanding t

Anthropogenic pollution, including residues from the green revolution initially aimed at addressing food security and healthcare, has paradoxically exacerbated environmental challenges. The transition towards comprehensive green biotechnology and bioremediation, achieved with lower financial investment, hinges on microbial biotechnology, with the Rhodococcus genus emerging as a promising contender. The significance of fully annotating genome sequences lies in comprehending strain constituents, devising experimental protocols, and strategically deploying these strains to address pertinent issue

Thanks to significant advances in genomics and bioinformatics, research on plant sex-determining genes has made remarkable progress over the past decade. Since the discovery of the OGI-MeGI sex-determination system in persimmons in 2014, candidate sex-determining genes have been identified in a dozen flowering plant species. In this review, we examine these newly discovered genes and explore what they reveal about the genetic basis of the evolution of dioecy. While these genes are diverse, many belong to key developmental pathways previously described in other species. Two primary evolutionary

Earthworms play an important role in the soil environment. To explore the difference in earthworms influence on various media in different soil-plant systems, the abundance of tetracycline, sulfonamide and quinolone resistance genes and the structure of the bacterial community were analysed from five different media including non-rhizosphere soil, rhizosphere soil, phyllosphere, root endophytes and earthworm intestine by real-time quantitative PCR and high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing. Studies have shown that earthworms can reduce the absolute abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)

Antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) are a major health risk caused particularly by anthropogenic activities. Acquisition of antibiotic resistances by bacteria is known to have happened before the discovery of antibiotics and can occur through different routes. Bacteriophages are thought to have an important contribution to the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. In this study, seven ARGs (blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX-M, blaCMY, mecA, vanA, and mcr-1) were investigated, in the bacteriophage fraction, in raw urban and hospital wastewaters. The genes were quantified

Biotechnological methods for targeted gene transfers into plants are key for successful breeding in the twenty-first century and thus essential for the survival of humanity. Two decades ago, genetic transformation of crop plants was not routine, and it was all but impossible with important cereals such as barley and wheat. The recent focus on crop plant genomics-yet based on the Arabidopsis toolbox-boosted the research for more efficient plant transformation protocols, thereby considerably widened the number of genetically tractable crops. Moreover, modern genome editing methods such as the CR

Plant immune responses activated through the perception of microbe-associated molecular patterns, leading to pattern-triggered immunity, are tightly regulated. This results in low immune responses in the absence of pathogens and a rapid return to the resting state following an activation event. Here, we show that two CALMODULIN-LIKE genes, CML46 and CML47, negatively regulate salicylic acid accumulation and immunity in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). The double mutant cml46 cml47 is highly resistant to the pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv maculicola (Pma). The effects of cml46 cml47 on Pma

The ability of plant viruses to propagate their genomes in host cells depends on many host factors. In the absence of an agrochemical that specifically targets plant viral infection cycles, one of the most effective methods for controlling viral diseases in plants is taking advantage of the host plant's resistance machinery. Recessive resistance is conferred by a recessive gene mutation that encodes a host factor critical for viral infection. It is a branch of the resistance machinery and, as an inherited characteristic, is very durable. Moreover, recessive resistance may be acquired by a defi

Mounting evidence from genomic and transcriptomic studies suggests that most genetic networks regulating the morphogenesis of land plant sporophytes were co-opted and modified from those already present in streptophyte algae and gametophytes of bryophytes sensu lato. However, thus far, no candidate genes have been identified that could be responsible for "planation", a conversion from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional growth pattern. According to the telome theory, "planation" was required for the genesis of the leaf blade in the course of leaf evolution. The key transcription factors r

The genetic mechanisms regulating dry fruit development and opercular dehiscence have been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana. In the bicarpellate silique, valve elongation and differentiation is controlled by FRUITFULL (FUL) that antagonizes SHATTERPROOF1-2 (SHP1/SHP2) and INDEHISCENT (IND) at the dehiscence zone where they control normal lignification. SHP1/2 are also repressed by REPLUMLESS (RPL), responsible for replum formation. Similarly, FUL indirectly controls two other factors ALCATRAZ (ALC) and SPATULA (SPT) that function in the proper formation of the separation layer. FUL and SHP1/

BACKGROUND: The ubiquitous LysM motif recognizes peptidoglycan, chitooligosaccharides (chitin) and, presumably, other structurally-related oligosaccharides. LysM-containing proteins were first shown to be involved in bacterial cell wall degradation and, more recently, were implicated in perceiving chitin (one of the established pathogen-associated molecular patterns) and lipo-chitin (nodulation factors) in flowering plants. However, the majority of LysM genes in plants remain functionally uncharacterized and the evolutionary history of complex LysM genes remains elusive.
RESULTS: We show that

An introduction of disease-resistant variety of a crop plant often leads to the development of a virulent race in pathogen species that restores the pathogenicity to the resistant crop. This often makes disease control of crop plants extremely difficult. In this paper, we theoretically explore the optimal 'multiline' control, which makes use of several different resistant varieties, that minimizes the expected degree of crop damages caused by epidemic outbreaks of the pathogen. We examine both single-locus and two-locus gene-for-gene (GFG) systems for the compatibility relationship between hos

Seven isolates of a putative cytorhabdovirus (family Rhabdoviridae, order Mononegavirales) designated as citrus-associated rhabdovirus (CiaRV) were identified in citrus, passion fruit, and paper bush from the same geographical area in China. CiaRV, bean-associated cytorhabdovirus (Brazil), and papaya virus E (Ecuador) should be taxonomically classified in the species Papaya cytorhabdovirus. Due to natural mutations, the glycoprotein (G) and P4 genes were impaired in citrus-infecting isolates of CiaRV, resulting in an atypical rhabdovirus genome organization of 3' leader-N-P-P3-M-L-5' trailer.

Wetland plant rhizospheres are active interfaces where pollutants, microbial hosts, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) interact, but their role in environmental resistomes remains unclear. We collected paired rhizosphere and bulk soils associated with five wetland plant species from urban riverine wetlands and integrated 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, metagenomic annotation, viral sequence profiles, and microplastic measurements. Rhizosphere soils contained higher total bacterial ARG abundance than bulk soils, consistent with selective enrichment of specific ARG subtypes. Enrichment va
