The human medial geniculate body.

The medial geniculate body in non-human species is divided into several parts, each with a different structure, physiological organization, and pattern of connections. Which parts of the human medial geniculate body and which types of neurons might be homologous to those of other species is unknown, and the object of the present study. The cytoarchitecture, fiber architecture, and neuronal organization of the adult human medial geniculate body were studied in Nissl, Golgi, and other preparations. Three divisions, comparable to those in other mammals, were described. The ventral division had a

An unusual cause of visual loss: involvement of bilateral lateral geniculate bodies.

We report the clinical and radiologic features of a 31-year-old woman who suffered incongruous binasal and bitemporal visual field defects and severe sudden visual loss due to hypoperfusion of bilateral lateral geniculate bodies following anaphylactic shock induced by 500 mg amoxicillin per os. Complete neuroophthalmologic examinations were performed regularly for visual acuity, color vision, pupillary reflexes, and visual fields. Additional testing was performed by means of MR imaging of the brain and CSF analysis. Follow-up was performed for 12 months. Vision loss was acute and severe, its o

Transsynaptic degeneration of lateral geniculate bodies in blind children: in vivo MR demonstration.

PURPOSE: To investigate signal alterations in the thalamic lateral geniculate bodies of blind patients compatible with transsynaptic degeneration of these nuclei caused by pregeniculate or postgeniculate interruption of the visual pathway. METHODS: Six patients were selected from a group of blind children in our care. Four had cerebral palsy caused by periventricular leukomalacia, one had infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy, and one had Chiari I malformation and hydrocephalus, which was worsened by bilateral ischemic lesions of the occipital lobes. MR examinations (obtained at 0.5 T) were reviewe

Lateral geniculate body is spared of tau pathology in Pick disease.

The pathobiology of tau is of great importance for understanding the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in aging and age-associated disorders such as Alzheimer disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementias. It is critical to identify neuronal populations and brain regions that are vulnerable or resistant to tau pathological changes. Pick disease (PiD) is a three-repeat (3R) tauopathy that belongs to the group of frontotemporal lobar degenerations. The neuropathologic changes of PiD are characterized by globular tau-positive neuronal intracytoplasmic inclusions, called Pick bodies, in the granule cell

The neurons of the medial geniculate body in the mustached bat (Pteronotus parnellii).

The neurons in the medial geniculate body were studied in Golgi preparations from adult mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii). Their somatic and dendritic configurations were compared with those of cells in other, nonecholocating mammals. A second goal was to use the thalamic nuclear subdivisions derived from Golgi material to integrate the findings in parallel studies of cytoarchitecture, immunocytochemistry, and tectothalamic connections. Three primary divisions are defined. The ventral division is large and has a stereotyped neuronal organization. Medium-sized perikarya (about 10 microns in

Changes to the lateral geniculate nucleus in Alzheimer's disease but not dementia with Lewy bodies.

AIMS: Complex visual hallucinations occur in 70% of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) cases and significantly affect patient well-being. Visuo-cortical and retinal abnormalities have been recorded in DLB and may play a role in visual hallucinations. The present study aimed to investigate the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), a visual relay centre between the retina and visual cortex, to see if changes to this structure underlie visual hallucinations in DLB. METHODS: Fifty-one [17 probable DLB, 19 control and 15 probable Alzheimer's disease (AD)] cases were recruited for a functional magnetic re

[Alteration of lateral geniculate body cells after partial injury].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the damage of the cells of the lateral geniculate bodies (LGB) of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats after partial optic nerve injury. METHODS: The optic nerve was pressed by a forceps (40 g) for 30 seconds to set up the animal model with optic nerve injury. LGB was chopped in serial coronal slices (10 microm thickness) by a cryomicrotome. The apoptosis of LGB cells was detected with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TDT)-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) technique after one week. After retrograde labeling with Granular Blue (GB) through injecting GB into optic cent

Visual field defects in vascular lesions of the lateral geniculate body.

Corresponding retinal nerve fibres begin their path in the eyes and end in a single visual cortical cell. Because of this arrangement, lesions in the anterior visual pathway produce incongruent visual field defects and in the posterior pathway congruent field defects. The lateral geniculate body is on the anterior third of the visual pathway. A lesion of this nucleus produces moderately to completely congruent visual field defects. Five patients with ischaemic lesions of the lateral geniculate body are reported. Two patients had a wedge-shaped homonymous hemianopia, two other cases had congrue

Size and duration of inhibition in the medial geniculate body in unanesthetized cats.

A method which allows repeated micro-electrode recordings from subcortical structures without using any drugs is described. This method was adopted in combination with convential implantation techniques to study click-evoked potentials and inhibitory processes in the auditory system of the cat. The click-evoked potentials in MG were hardly affected by moderate doses of barbiturate and only to a minor degree in the auditory cortex. In the unanaesthetized animal the most significant contribution to the click-evoked inhibition in the auditory system was due to mechanisms in the MG. The inhibition

An autoradiographic study of the projections from the lateral geniculate body of the rat.

The projections from the lateral geniculate body of the rat were followed using the technique of autoradiography after injections of [3H] proline into the dorsal and/or ventral nuclei of this diencephalic structure. Autoradiographs were prepared from either frozen or paraffin coronal sections through the rat brain. The dorsal nucleus of the lateral geniculate projected via the optic radiation to area 17 of the cerebral cortex. There was also a slight extension of label into the zones of transition between areas 17, 18 and 18a. The distribution of silver grains in the various layers of the cere

Tonotopic organization in the medial geniculate body (MGB) of lightly anesthetized cats.

In the medial geniculate body (MGB) of nitrous oxide anesthetized cats, the pars lateralis (PL) was the only nucleus to show a clear topographic arrangement of its neurons according to their characteristic frequency (CF). When compared to barbiturate anesthetized cats (Imig and Morel 1985a), the tonotopic organization in PL appeared less strict and was characterized by a significant local CF disparity. Furthermore, the degree of tonotopic organization varied along the rostrocaudal axis of the nucleus: it was lower in its caudal than in its rostral half. In the pars ovoidea, the rostral half of

A Golgi study of the medial geniculate body in the tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

The subdivisions of the medial geniculate body in Tupaia recognized in previous connectional and cytoarchitectural studies are identified in Golgi-impregnated material. They may be distinguished by the organization of the neuropil, especially the dendrites, and, in many cases, by differences in the neurons. The ventral nucleus contains tufted cells with disc-shaped dendritic fields which are aligned to form laminae. The caudomarginal and deep dorsal nuclei have less tufted, less precisely arranged cells with longer, thin appendages. Neurons in the suprageniculate and dorsal nuclei are similar

The role of the medial geniculate body of the thalamus in the pathophysiology of tinnitus and implications for treatment.

Tinnitus is an auditory sensation in the absence of actual external stimulation. Different clinical interventions are used in tinnitus treatment, but only few patients respond to available options. The lack of successful tinnitus treatment is partly due to the limited knowledge about the mechanisms underlying tinnitus. Recently, the auditory part of the thalamus has gained attention as a central structure in the neuropathophysiology of tinnitus. Increased thalamic spontaneous firing rate, bursting activity and oscillations, alongside an increase of GABAergic tonic inhibition have been shown in

Bilateral isolated lateral geniculate body lesions in a patient with pancreatitis and microangiopathy.

An 18-year-old woman developed pancreatitis and a thrombotic microangiopathy but no electrolyte abnormalities. She required intubation hours after admission and was not able to communicate for 8 days. Upon recovering consciousness, she reported severely impaired vision in both eyes, but ophthalmologic evaluation and neuroimaging were not obtained until several days later. Ophthalmologic examination documented retinal infarcts and profound binocular vision loss with hourglass bilateral homonymous hemianopic visual field loss. MRI showed signal abnormalities restricted to the area of the lateral

[Incongruous, incomplete, homonymous hemianopia due to an infarction localized to the lateral geniculate body].

A 45-year-old male was admitted with an acute-onset visual field defect. Goldmann perimetry revealed an incongruent, incomplete right homonymous hemianopia. The left eye showed a wedge-shaped, horizontal right hemianopia, whereas the right eye showed constriction of the right visual hemifield. MRI showed acute infarction localized to the left lateral geniculate body (LGB). LGB has a dual blood supply: from the anterior choroidal artery and from the lateral posterior choroidal artery (LPChA). The LPChA territory of LGB receives projection from the retinal area around the macula and horizontal m

An Abnormal MRI Signal in Both Lateral Geniculate Bodies Is a Diagnostic Indicator for Patients with Behçet's Disease.

A few case reports involving Behçet's disease have described visual field defects ascribed to the lateral geniculate body; however, no cases of lesions in both lateral geniculate bodies have been reported. A 50-year-old male who had fever and genital ulceration 3 months earlier noticed visual field defects. A T2-weighted MRI and FLAIR image showed high-intensity lesions in both lateral geniculate bodies. The posterior end of the optic tracts and lateral geniculate bodies were bilaterally enhanced with gadolinium. Because of the presence of three (aphthous stomatitis, genital ulceration and uve
