CNS activity of swertiamarin, a secoiridoid glucoside from Swertia chirata, was evaluated. An apparent anomaly, associated with the unanticipated finding that the alcoholic extracts (excluding mangiferin) of S. chirata significantly reversed the mangiferin-induced CNS-stimulating effects in albino mice and rats, was resolved. The results indicate that swertiamarin and mangiferin antagonize each other in vivo and thereby reverse their CNS effects.

Diabetes, a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insulin insufficiency or impaired insulin sensitivity, is one of the major global health challenges. Persistent hyperglycemia in diabetes affects microcirculation, eyes, kidneys, liver, pancreas, muscle, and adipose tissue, which consequently leads to irreversible health issues such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, cardiovascular complications, abnormalities of lipoprotein metabolism, and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Although available therapies are effective to some extent, they remain limited in efficacy an

This study employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to conduct a morphological observation of vessel elements from 10 Gentianaceae species collected on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. We systematically compared vessel type, end-wall and lateral-wall characteristics, and vessel diameter to explore their adaptive relationship to the extreme plateau environment and the evolutionary trends of vessels. The results indicated that the vessel end walls of all 10 species featured simple perforation plates, while annular, spiral, and scalariform thickenings were observed on the lateral walls of all speci

The present study was intended to evaluate the in vitro (COX-1/COX-2) and in vivo anti-inflammatory and ulcerogenic activity of newer phytoconstituents isolated from the aerial parts of Swertia alata C.B. Clarke (Gentianaceae). For isolation of newer phytoconstituents, the ethanolic extract of aerial parts of S. alata was subjected to column chromatography using mixture of petroleum ether and chloroform in various concentrations, which yielded two phytoisolates characterised as nonacosyl triacontanoate (SA-3) and 8-O-glucpyranosyl-(2-acetyl)-1,3-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-xanthone (SA-9). Herbal treatments have been practiced by humans over centuries and therefore possess time-proven safety. However, it is crucial to evaluate the toxic effects of herbal medicine to confirm their safety, particularly when developing therapeutic drugs. Use of laboratory animals such as mice, rat, and rabbits was considered as gold standard in herbal toxicity assessments. However, in the last few decades, the ethical consideration of using higher vertebrates for toxicity testing has become more controversial. As a possible alternative model involving lower vertebrates such as zebra fish were intro
