Mapping the geographical distribution of lymphatic filariasis in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Past case reports have indicated that lymphatic filariasis (LF) occurs in Zambia, but knowledge about its geographical distribution and prevalence pattern, and the underlying potential environmental drivers, has been limited. As a background for planning and implementation of control, a country-wide mapping survey was undertaken between 2003 and 2011. Here the mapping activities are outlined, the findings across the numerous survey sites are presented, and the ecological requirements of the LF distribution are explored. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Approximately 10,000 adult vo

Mapping the Geographic Distribution of Tungiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The geographic distribution of tungiasis is poorly understood, despite the frequent occurrence of the disease in marginalized populations of low socioeconomic status. To date, little work is available to define the geography of this neglected tropical disease (NTD). This exploratory study incorporated geostatistical modeling to map the suitability for tungiasis transmission in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In SSA, environmental suitability is predicted in 44 countries, including Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Cote de Ivoire, Mali, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Gabon, Ug

Mapping and Modelling the Geographical Distribution and Environmental Limits of Podoconiosis in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is assumed to have the highest burden of podoconiosis globally, but the geographical distribution and environmental limits and correlates are yet to be fully investigated. In this paper we use data from a nationwide survey to address these issues. METHODOLOGY: Our analyses are based on data arising from the integrated mapping of podoconiosis and lymphatic filariasis (LF) conducted in 2013, supplemented by data from an earlier mapping of LF in western Ethiopia in 2008-2010. The integrated mapping used woreda (district) health offices' reports of podoconiosis and LF to guid

Mapping the economics of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: Geographic variation in U.S. reimbursement patterns.

We sought to examine the relationship between extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) reimbursement and regional economic performance. Significant variation was observed across states in average payment per discharge, (p < 0.0001). The highest mean Medicare payments per discharge occurred in New Hampshire ($21,045), while the lowest was in Oklahoma ($5,487). Gross domestic product (GDP) demonstrated a weak positive correlation with average payment per discharge (r = 0.18, p = 0.0087), indicating GDP may not be the primary driver of reimbursement. Substantial geographic variation in ECMO re

Mapping the Geographic Distribution of Dimorphic Mycoses Using a US Commercial Insurance Database.

BACKGROUND: The dimorphic mycoses (DMs) histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, and coccidioidomycosis are classically thought to be geographically restricted to specific regions of the United States. The current scientific consensus is that these geographic boundaries are expanding, but the extent of this expansion remains uncertain. METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis of >21 million (annually) commercially insured individuals within the United States during 2007-2016. Diagnosis of histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, and blastomycosis were identified using International Classification of

Mapping the phylogeny and lineage history of geographically distinct BCG vaccine strains.

The bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has been in use for prevention of tuberculosis for over a century. It remains the only widely available tuberculosis vaccine and its protective efficacy has varied across geographical regions. Since it was developed, the BCG vaccine strain has been shared across different laboratories around the world, where use of differing culture methods has resulted in genetically distinct strains over time. Whilst differing BCG vaccine efficacy around the world is well documented, and the reasons for this may be multifactorial, it has been hypothesized that genet

Mapping the overdose crisis in Ontario: geographic disparities in opioid-related harms and services.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-related harms and deaths remain a persistent public health crisis across Ontario, Canada, with non-urban regions facing a disproportionate burden. However, discussions of opioid-related harms across Ontario's geographic regions have provided an oversimplified assessment, contrasting rural and urban regions which mask the unique challenges and true disparities faced by sparsely populated communities, which are commonly located in the Northern regions. Our study aims to provide a more in depth understanding of the opioid crisis in Ontario across different geographic classifica

Geographic mapping of Enterobacteriaceae with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) phenotype in Pereira, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is an ecological and multicausal problem. Infections caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) can be acquired and transmitted in the community. Data on community-associated ESBL-E infections/colonizations in Colombia are scarce. Georeferencing tools can be used to study the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance at the community level. METHODS: We conducted a study of geographic mapping using modern tools based on geographic information systems (GIS). Two study centers from the city of Pereira, Colombia were involved. The

Mapping risk of bovine fasciolosis in the south of Brazil using Geographic Information Systems.

Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola hepatica, is an endemic disease of ruminants that occurs in several countries of South America where it can lead to decreased production and fertility and, in severe cases, animal death. Although very prevalent, information on the epidemiology of the disease is incomplete in Brazil. The objective of the present study was to define the prevalence of F. hepatica in the livers of cattle from slaughterhouses and correlate the data with the animal's origin (climate and altitude) using a Geographic Information System (GIS). The data was used to create an epidemiologic

A method for compiling satellite image map geographic objects based on vector map data via deep learning.

Map compilation is a fundamental component of cartography. Apart from vector maps, satellite image maps also require compilation for specific purposes, such as enhancing visual clarity, concealing sensitive information, and ensuring consistency with corresponding vector representations. This paper proposes an automated method for satellite image map compilation based on deep learning and guided by vector map data, which consists of several key steps. First, scale-matched vector maps and satellite image maps are aligned and partitioned to generate training samples in the form of paired vector t

Spatial mapping and geographic variation of inflammatory bowel disease in Canada: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) poses significant challenges to healthcare systems, with rising prevalence globally. To address challenges of health resource allocation and understand the geographic distribution of disease in Canada, we explored spatial mapping of IBD across Canada. METHODS: Data from 2009 to 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey identified individuals with IBD. Crude and adjusted prevalence rates were calculated, and spatial dependencies were analyzed using Moran's I. Local indicators of spatial association identified hot-spots where the prevalence of I

Geographical Environment Factors and Risk Mapping of Human Cystic Echinococcosis in Western China.

The study aimed to reveal the risk factors and predict the prevalence of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) in Western China. To do this, we analyzed county-wide data relating to the prevalence of human CE in seven provinces of Western China, along with associated human, natural geographical environmental data. We then used spatial analysis and multiple regression analysis to investigate the correlation between the prevalence of human CE and associated environmental factors and to create a risk map of the disease in the seven provinces. Our analysis showed that grassland area ratio and Tibetan p

A geographic information systems model for mapping risk of fasciolosis in cattle and buffaloes in Cambodia.

A geographic information systems (GIS) model for mapping the risk of fasciolosis in cattle and buffaloes was developed for the Kingdom of Cambodia using determinants of inundation, proximity to rivers, land use, slope, elevation, and the density of cattle and buffaloes. Determinants were subjectively weighted according to their perceived relative importance before combining them to produce a risk-map of fasciolosis. The model estimates that 28% of Cambodia is potentially at risk of fasciolosis with areas of high and moderate risk concentrated in southern and central Cambodia. The estimates of
