Complete mitochondrial genome analyzes of four gerbil species (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) distributed in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: The genus Meriones Illiger, 1811 is widely distributed in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Central Asia. In spite of many studies evaluating the gerbil phylogeny, the systematics of this genus is controversial because studies analyzing a single gene region yield inconsistent results. The presented research provides the first complete mitogenomes of four gerbil species (Meriones crassus, Meriones persicus, Meriones tristrami, and Meriones vinogradovi) distributed in Türkiye and novel and strong results to clarify the phylogenetic relationships of these gerbils. METHODS: Next G

Anti-leishmanial antibodies during natural infection of Psammomys obesus and Meriones shawi (Rodentia, Gerbillinae) by Leishmania major.

Sera from 77 rodents (Psammomys obesus: 64; Meriones (M.) shawi: 10; M. libycus: 3) trapped in a focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) (Leishmania (L.) major) were examined for the presence of anti-leishmanial antibodies by the indirect fluorscence antibody technique (IFAT) (L. major antigens) using homologous antiglobulins and/or anti-Rattus conjugates. Sera from 21 animals were positive with titres that ranged from 1: 20 up to 1: 640. The investigation revealed that a good correlation existed between the occurrence of antileishmanial antibodies in the sera and amastigotes in the ro

A finding of the XX/XY1Y2 sex-chromosome system in Taterillus arenarius (Gerbillinae, Rodentia) and its phylogenetic implications.

A chromosome banding study (R- and C-bands) of a male Taterillus arenarius (Rodentia, Gerbillinae) specimen from Mauritania revealed the presence of an XX/XY1Y2 sex-chromosome system in the karyotype, as found previously in three other congeneric species. This finding allowed us to resolve the phylogenetic affinities of this species within the genus and to propose an evolutionary scenario leading to the formation of the species with an XX/XY1Y2 sex-chromosome system. A review of chromosome data in Taterillus suggests that there may be more species in the genus than hitherto recognized.

Intraspecific diversity of Meriones persicus (Rodentia; Gerbillinae), the main plague reservoir in Iran, and its connection to enzootic plague in Iran.

Plague, a lethal zoonotic disease, primarily circulates within rodent populations and their fleas. In Iran, the widely distributed jird, Meriones persicus, serves as the principal reservoir for plague, with a belief in the existence of five out of its six recognized subspecies within the country. However, these subspecies are classified into four mitochondrial cytochrome b sub-lineages (IA, IB, IIA, IIB). This discrepancy, combined with the presence of an unnamed sub-lineage in central Iran awaiting taxonomic clarification, has left intraspecific taxonomy unsettled and obscured the true alignm

Dynamics of Leishmania infection rates in Rhombomys opimus (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) population of an endemic focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) due to Leishmania major is a great public health problem in the Old World. Leishmania major is widely distributed in populations of rodents in arid and savannah regions. In this study, seasonal variation of natural infection with Leishmania parasites in Rhombomys opimus (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) population of an endemic focus of ZCL in Iran was monitored. The study was conducted from October 2007 to October 2008 in the central part of the country. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used for the detection and identification of Leishmania parasi

Demography, reproductive biology and diet of the bushveld gerbil Tatera leucogaster (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) in the Lake Rukwa valley, south-western Tanzania.

Seasonal abundance, reproductive biology and feeding ecology of the bushveld gerbil Tatera leucogaster (Peters, 1852) were investigated in small-scale maize field-fallow land mosaics in south-western Tanzania. The gerbils were collected over a 2-year period using Sherman live and Victor hold-fast snap traps in permanent 4.5-ha grids. A total of 664 individuals were captured over 13 650 trap nights, giving an overall trap success rate of 4.9%. Trap success varied between seasons with and without crops in the field but not between habitat types. At this site, the breeding activity of this specie

Evidence for the existence of two distinct species: Psammomys obesus and Psammomys vexillaris within the sand rats (Rodentia, Gerbillinae), reservoirs of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Tunisia.

A thorough taxonomic knowledge about putative animal reservoirs of transmissible diseases is an absolute prerequisite to any ecological investigation and epidemiological survey of zoonoses. Indeed, accurate identification of these reservoirs is essential for predicting species-specific population outbreaks and therefore to develop accurate ecological control strategies. The systematic status of sand rats (genus Psammomys) remains unclear despite the pivotal role of these rodents in the epidemiology of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) disease as sand rats are the main known reservoir host

Description of Candidatus Bartonella fadhilae n. sp. and Candidatus Bartonella sanaae n. sp. (Bartonellaceae) from Dipodillus dasyurus and Sekeetamys calurus (Gerbillinae) from the Sinai Massif (Egypt).

Bartonella spp. are parasites of mammalian erythrocytes and endothelial cells, transmitted by blood-feeding arthropod ectoparasites. Different species of rodents may constitute the main hosts of Bartonella, including several zoonotic species of Bartonella. The aim of this study was to identify and compare Bartonella species and genotypes isolated from rodent hosts from the South Sinai, Egypt. Prevalence of Bartonella infection was assessed in rodents (837 Acomys dimidiatus, 73 Acomys russatus, 111 Dipodillus dasyurus, and 65 Sekeetamys calurus) trapped in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 in four dry

Review of hymenolepidids associated with the tribe Sudarikovinini Spassky, 1991 (Eucestoda, Hymenolepididae), with descriptions of two unrecognized species from the Shaw's jird Meriones (Pallasiomys) shawi (Duvernoy) (Rodentia: Muridae: Gerbillinae) from Northern Africa.

The taxonomic position of the hymenolepidid cestode genera Paraoligorchis Wason et Johnson, 1977 and Sudarikovina Spassky, 1951 from gerbils and ground squirrels from Africa, Southwest Asia and South Asia is clarified based on re-examination of type and voucher materials. The generic diagnosis of Sudarikovina is amended. The main corrections for diagnostic characters at the generic level include: irregularly-spaced transverse anastomoses of ventral osmoregulatory canals; presence of both specimens with dextral genital pores and specimens with sinistral genital pores; vagina clearly covered ext

Adaptation in brain structure and respiratory and olfactory structures across environmental gradients in African and North American muroid rodents.

Morphometric studies of 3D micro CT-scanned images can provide insights into the evolution of the brain and sensory structures but such data are still scarce for the most diverse mammalian order of rodents. From reviewed and new data, we tested for convergence to extreme aridity and high elevation in the sensory and brain morphology of rodents, from morphometric data from micro-CT X-ray scans of 174 crania of 16 species of three distantly related African murid (soft-furred mice, Praomyini, laminate-toothed rats, Otomyini, and gerbils, Gerbillinae) clades and one North American cricetid (deer m

The morphology of islets of Langerhans is only mildly affected by the lack of Pdx-1 in the pancreas of adult Meriones jirds.

The Meriones Jirds belong to the genus of Gerbillinae (Rodentia: Muridae). We and others have previously reported the lack of the pancreatic beta-cell transcription factor, Pdx-1 in the fat sand rat, Psammomys obesus. The aim of the study was to investigate the expression and localization of Pdx-1 in phylogenetically related members of the Gerbillinae subfamily. In addition, we characterized by IHC the expression pattern of islet hormones and additional important pancreatic transcription factors in order to evaluate overall endocrine pancreas appearance. PCR showed that Pdx-1 was easily amplif

The Genome of the Great Gerbil Reveals Species-Specific Duplication of an MHCII Gene.

The great gerbil (Rhombomys opimus) is a social rodent living in permanent, complex burrow systems distributed throughout Central Asia, where it serves as the main host of several important vector-borne infectious pathogens including the well-known plague bacterium (Yersinia pestis). Here, we present a continuous annotated genome assembly of the great gerbil, covering over 96% of the estimated 2.47-Gb genome. Taking advantage of the recent genome assemblies of the sand rat (Psammomys obesus) and the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus), comparative immunogenomic analyses reveal shared gene

Karyosystematic and morphometric characterization of the rodents as reservoir hosts of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in an endemic focus of Isfahan Province, Iran.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Rodents belonging to Gerbillinae subfamily are the main reservoir hosts of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in Iran. Regarding the important role of these rodents in the maintenance of Leishmania major in the nature, their identification with morphometric, cytogenetic and molecular methods seems to be essential. The karyotype study of these species, captured from a new focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis located in the south of Isfahan Province was carried out in 2007. Potentially Zoonotic Viruses in Wild Rodents, United Arab Emirates, 2019-A Pilot Study.

The majority of emerging viral infectious diseases in humans originate from wildlife reservoirs, such as rodents and bats. We investigated a possible reservoir, namely wild gerbils and mice trapped in a desert reserve within the emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). In total, 52 gerbils and 1 jird (Gerbillinae), 10 house mice (Mus musculus), and 1 Arabian spiny mouse (Acomys dimidiatus) were sampled. Oro-pharyngeal swabs, fecal samples, attached ticks, and organ samples (where available) were screened by (RT-q)PCR for the following viruses: Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coro

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major: Do humans play a role in amplifying transmission?

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) caused by Leishmania (L.) major is the most widespread form of CL worldwide, with hundreds of thousands of cases annually. It is associated with significant morbidity and economic burden, particularly in North Africa and the Middle East. For over a century, the zoonotic transmission of ZCL, involving wild gerbils (Muridae: Gerbillinae) as the reservoir and Phlebotomus (Ph.) papatasi as the vector, has been considered an established fact, with no contradictory debate. However, the pronounced endophilic and anthropophilic behaviors of Ph. papatasi, the expo

Leishmania spp. infection in Rhombomys opimus and Meriones libycus as main reservoirs of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in central parts of Iran: Progress and implications in health policy.

Rodents from the subfamily Gerbillinae are the principal reservoir of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania major in the center and northeast of Iran. This study was conducted to determine both naturally occurring Leishmania infection rates and the distribution of Leishmania species in the central parts of Iran during 2019-2020. In this regard, presence of Leishmania parasites were confirmed by microscopic examination and the species were identified by nested-PCR using the Internal Transcribed Spacer2- Ribosomal DNA (ITS2-rDNA). Finally, some samples were sequenced and, the blast a

Molecular assessment of Bartonella in Gerbillus nanus from Saudi Arabia reveals high levels of prevalence, diversity and co-infection.

Bartonellae bacteria are associated with several re-emerging human diseases. These vector-borne pathogens have a global distribution, yet data on Bartonella prevalence and diversity in the Arabian Peninsula are limited. In this study we assessed the Bartonella infection status of the Baluchistan gerbil (Gerbillus nanus), a species associated with pastoral communities throughout the Middle East region, using a multi-gene PCR screening approach. The results demonstrated that 94 (68.1%) of the 138 gerbils trapped on a monthly basis, over a period of one year, were PCR-positive. Sequencing of the
