Dementia and other late-life conditions in neuropsychiatry impose a heavy burden on society as a whole and in families in particular. A number of clinical presentations involving family aspects may be seen in clinical practice in a range of diagnoses (Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, depression or any other psychiatric disorder in the elderly). As a consequence, there is a growing trend towards working with families in geriatric psychiatry. Marital issues are not a frequent target for specific clinical intervention, but couple therapy may be useful regardless of age. The effectiveness of

Cause and development of psychic disorders during old age today cannot be explained merely on the basis of a degenerative organic brain process alone but have to be viewed under the aspects of multimorbidity with biologic-somatic factors, biographic and social determined situations as well. The disease of old age does develop in the sense of a multifactorial genesis. Besides that exogenous bodily-factors, e.g. inflammatory disease, cardio-vascular diseases do play an important role. In judging the psychopathology one always has to consider the possibility that the behavior of the sick and old

The psychiatric care of the elderly in the Federal Republic of Germany must presently be considered to be inadequate. At the present the main point of emphasis in treatment is placed almost exclusively on the stationary sector, having a predominantly keeping character. What is necessary, however, is psychogeriatric activity which unfolds itself very substantially in the field of out-patient diagnostics, therapy and health education in order to cope better with the handcaps of the the elderly. Apart from the urgently needed establishment of new institutions, the overcoming of the wide-spread th

A study was made of the Emergency Department records of 49 elderly (65 years old or older) and 49 middle-aged (40-64 years old) patients seen in an urban hospital's psychiatric emergency service. The data were compared for demographic and admission information, psychiatric treatment history, presenting complaints, symptoms, diagnoses, and final disposition status. For the elderly patients, the referral was more likely to be their first contact with psychiatric treatment, and they were more likely to be referred (accompanied) by family or friends than to be self-referred. Among the middle-aged

BACKGROUND: Gabapentinoids (gabapentin, pregabalin) are increasingly being prescribed and frequently in off-label indications. This applies also to older people.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides a current overview regarding the pharmacology, safety and tolerability and efficacy of gabapentinoids in psychogeriatric indications, particularly behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A selective literature search was carried out in the databases PubMed and ScienceDirect using the search terms "gabapentin", "pregabalin", "dementia" and "elderly".
RESULTS: T

The older population, the group of the very old in particular, is increasing and thus the risk group for the two most important psychiatric disorders, dementia and depression. Many individuals become mentally ill for the first time late in life, mainly because of losses, loneliness and somatic diseases. Therefore, beside physical examination, screening for depression and cognitive testing are very important for the general practitioner. Relatives and caregivers often play a keyrole. They have to be involved in evaluation and therapy and their needs for support and advice should be considered.

In preliminary research the authors tested the congruent validity of MSE by comparison with results of the MMSE scale which previously proved useful. In 155 probands of senior age they used MSE, WAIS-R. They found a close correlation of the MSE score and the results. of psychomotor examination of the intellect and memory. As regards different factors of the intellect the MSE performance correlated most closely with the social intelligence and practical instructive solution of problems. The scale has a satisfactory sensitivity but low specificity. The score is influenced by the promorbid intell

A review was conducted of the records of 147 patients above the age of 60 in a 350-bed general university hospital for whom a request for consultations was made over a two-year period by a geriatric psychiatry division in a department of psychiatry. Findings were compared with those obtained by Mainprize and Rodin and by Ruskin. Most referrals in the present study were from internal medicine as they were in the other two studies. The principal reason for referrals in this and in Mainprize and Rodin's study was depression (48% and 37%, respectively) but not in Ruskin's study (10%). The primary

The question of the relationship between motor behaviour and psychopathology has been of concern to clinicians for many years. This question appears in the history of diseases as different from each other as general paralysis, hysteria, schizophrenia and mental retardation. The questions raised were the source of the development of a symptomatology of motor behaviours--the domain of which is not muscular potential or praxic abilities (action capacities) as much as their actual use in observed action (action "realization"). This symptomatology implies an interpersonal dimension, which translate

BACKGROUND: This exploratory study examines factors associated with isolation from informal social ties among geriatric psychiatry inpatients. Specifically, it examines the associations of diagnoses, psychiatric history, and measures of current functioning with social isolation.
METHODS: Analyses rely upon data derived from the Resident Assessment Instrument-Mental Health (RAI-MH), which is a patient focused, multidimensional, comprehensive assessment instrument designed to be a component of a larger, integrated health information system linking mental health with home care, long-term care, a

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, a global pandemic. This pandemic disrupted health care for patients and providers. Uncertainty about COVID-19 played a significant role in the negative mental health impact in older adults. The effect of increasing age on morbidity and mortality in those who came down with COVID-19 has been substantial. The pandemic took a tremendous toll on the mental and physical health of older adults in general with even more severe consequences i

Neuroimaging, both structural and functional, serve as useful adjuncts to clinical assessment, and can provide objective, reliable means of assessing disease presence and process in the aging population. In the following review we briefly explain current imaging methodologies. Then, we analyze recent developments in developing neuroimaging biomarkers for two highly prevalent disorders in the elderly population- Alzheimer's disease (AD) and late-life depression (LLD). In AD, efforts are focused on early diagnosis through in vivo visualization of disease pathophysiology. In LLD, recent imaging e

OBJECTIVES: Virtual Reality-based interventions have become an important element of digital mental health, offering accessible and scalable treatment options. However, studies on VR-based approaches in elderly patients are scarce. This explorative study examined the feasibility of using Virtual Reality (VR) for elderly patients with psychiatric illness, focusing on the sense of presence as the primary outcome.
METHODS: The study included N = 30 patients between the ages of 59-92 years who were currently in geriatric psychiatric inpatient and day clinic treatment. Participants were assessed be

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains an important treatment of geriatric patients. ECT treats severe depression, mania, psychosis, catatonia, and comorbid depression and agitation in dementia. ECT also serves a crucial role in treating urgent illness requiring expedient recovery, such as catatonia, or in patients with severe suicidal ideation or intent. ECT is even more effective in the elderly than in mixed-age adult populations. ECT is a safe treatment option with few medical contraindications. Cognitive effects are largely transient, even in patients with preexisting cognitive impairment

Mental-health service utilization among elderly people has been shown to be low relative to younger age groups. This study was done to determine the current proportion of elderly persons served in a university-affiliated psychiatry outpatient clinic, and to better characterize elderly patients who receive specialized mental-health care in this setting. The proportion of visits from elderly patients (aged 60 and over) was found to be 16%. Demographic and clinical characteristics of a sample of 140 consecutive geriatric patients evaluated at the clinic were obtained. The data revealed that the p

A Caucasian female octogenarian with multiple medical problems was admitted to the inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit with intermittent altered mental status and decline in memory. She had been hospitalized four times in the previous three months. She was admitted on more than 10 medications and received more than 20 different medications in this time period. It was determined that she had delirium concurrent with dementia and/or depression. During her hospital stay a urinary tract infection (UTI) was treated, her anticholinergic medications were minimized, and her digoxin dose was adjusted.
