Prenatal care providers are advised to evaluate maternal weight at each regularly scheduled prenatal visit, monitor progress toward meeting weight gain goals, and provide individualized counseling if significant deviations from a woman's goals occur. Today, nearly 50% of women exceed their weight gain goals with overweight and obese women having the highest prevalence of excessive weight gain. Risks of inadequate weight gain include low birthweight and failure to initiate breast-feeding whereas the risks of excessive weight gain include cesarean deliveries and postpartum weight retention for t

Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) is associated with an increasing incidence of maternal and neonatal complications, including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, fetal macrosomia, and increased cesarean birth rates. In the United States, it is recommended that health care providers use an individualized approach to counsel a woman about pregnancy weight gain goals that is based on the woman's initial body mass index (BMI) and to track GWG throughout the pregnancy by evaluating maternal weight at each visit. Studies have shown that women entering pregnancy with a higher BMI are at incre

OBJECTIVE: To examine pregnant women's gestational weight gain expectations and advice from various sources (ie, self, family and friends, physician) and the association of these sources of expectations and advice with measured gestational weight gain.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a cohort study of 230 pregnant women in their second pregnancy. Each woman was queried at 12 weeks of gestation about the amount of weight: 1) she felt was "Работает" to gain, 2) she expected to gain, 3) her friends and family thought she should gain, and 4) the specificity of her physician's advice about

The aim of the study was to analyse gestational weight gain (GWG) according to body mass index (BMI) category and to explore the relationship between GWG and pregnancy complications. Women were recruited in the 1st trimester. Weight and height were measured and BMI calculated. Weight was measured at 38 weeks' gestation and GWG calculated. Clinical details were obtained prospectively. Of the 604 women recruited, 45.5% were primigravidas and 25.2% were obese. The overall mean GWG was 11.6 kg (SD 6.0). In obese women, the mean GWG was 10.4 kg (SD 7.5) compared with 12.6 kg (SD 5.7) in the normal

OBJECTIVE: Gestational weight gain (GWG) above recommendations is a risk factor for adverse maternal, perinatal, and long-term outcomes. This study hypothesized that prepregnancy weight gain may portend excess GWG.
METHODS: Among 1,126 women (51% of whom were of Black race) in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study with post-baseline births, the prepregnancy annual rate of BMI change per woman was estimated (slope; 5 years before pregnancy) and was related to the risk of GWG above Institute of Medicine recommendations using mixed-effects models (binary) and GWG z

Pregnant women have been told that gaining weight during pregnancy is important for maternal and perinatal health outcomes. However, today it is known that excessive weight gain during pregnancy is associated with adverse health outcomes. This article presents the connection between gestational weight gain and long-term postpartum weight retention as well as relevant epidemiology, predictors for postpartum weight retention and implications of its occurrence. In addition, in this review we raise possible prevention and intervention strategies for preventing weight retention following delivery.

Rates of obesity continue to be a cause of morbidity and mortality, requiring intervention. Excessive gestational weight gain is related to postpartum weight retention and subsequent development of obesity, which translates into higher risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes in future pregnancies and long-term excess cardiovascular disease and cancer for the mothers. Limiting gestational weight gain to within recommended limits prevents postpartum weight retention. This article provides an overview of methods and practices aimed at helping women achieve a healthy weight between pregnanc

BACKGROUND: Maternal gestational weight gain (GWG) is a risk factor for the development of overweight in her child. It is unknown whether GWG programs the child's health or whether GWG indicates a shared familial lifestyle during childhood. To disentangle these influences, we studied the association of GWG and postdelivery maternal weight change simultaneously with child's weight development.
METHODS: We used data from 3367 children participating in a birth cohort that started in 1996 in the Netherlands. Weight and height were self-reported. GWG was categorized as "inadequate," "adequate," an

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the risk of maternal overweight associated with an excessive rate of gestational gain needs to be balanced against the risks of impaired fetal growth associated with a low rate of gain.
METHODS: Rate of gestational weight gain was measured prospectively in a sample of 274 young, low-income, and primarily minority women (12-29 years old) with pregravid body mass indices (BMI) in the normal range (19.8-26.0). We defined an excessive rate of gain between 20-36 weeks' gestation as one greater than 0.68 kg/week, and a low rate of gain as one less than 0.34 kg/week.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In 2009, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued recommendations for gestational weight gain (GWG) based on body mass index (BMI). Several studies have challenged those recommendations for women with obesity, considering them too liberal and advising more limited weight gain - or even weight loss - during pregnancy to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Our aim was to study how gestational weight gain in women with obesity impacted maternal and fetal complications in the Belgian population. We did this by comparing the results from two groups of patients with obesity: t

Gestational weight gain (GWG) involves health consequences for both mother and offspring. Genetic factors seem to play a role in the GWG trait. For small effect sizes of a single genetic polymorphism (SNP), a genetic risk score (GRS) summarizing risk-associated variation from multiple SNPs can serve as an effective approach to genetic association analysis. The aim of the study was to analyze the association between genetic risk score (GRS) and gestational weight gain (GWG). GWG was calculated for a total of 342 healthy Polish women of Caucasian origin, aged 19 to 45 years. The SNPs rs9939609 (

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between prenatal stress and gestational weight gain (GWG).
STUDY DESIGN: This was an analysis of women recruited between 2013-2015 from four sites in the US. We tested associations between responses at 32-35 weeks to the Life Experiences Survey (LES), a 37-item measure of events and perceived stress, and GWG categories. Bivariable comparisons and logistic regression were used to estimate the association between the total LES score and the odds of achieving adequate GWG.
RESULT: Among the 725 women, those with adequate GWG had lower median LES scores (5)

Adequate weight gain during pregnancy is one of the factors for its proper course. Excessive weight gain during this period of a woman's life is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. In this study, we determine the impact of excessive gestational weight gain on pregnancy outcomes. The study is based on the results of a Polish national survey performed between 2011 and 2017 on a group of 10,319 women and 6930 children. Excessive weight gain during pregnancy was associated with higher birthweight and higher prevalence and risk of birthweight over 4500 g (OR 6.92; 95% CI 3.10-15.42), cesare

AIM: Excessive gestational weight gain increases risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) but it remains unclear whether weight control after GDM diagnosis improves outcomes. We assessed whether: (1) total gestational weight gain during pregnancy (0-36 weeks); (2) early gestational weight gain (0-28 weeks, before GDM diagnosis); or (3) late gestational weight gain (28-36 weeks, after diagnosis) are associated with maternal-fetal outcomes.
METHODS: Some 546 women with GDM who delivered viable singleton infants at a single UK obstetric centre (October 2014 to March 2017) were included in thi

INTRODUCTION: Excessive maternal gestational weight gain (GWG) is strongly correlated with childhood obesity, yet how excess maternal weight gain and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) interact to affect early childhood obesity is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether overall and trimester-specific maternal GWG and GDM were associated with obesity in offspring by age 6 years.
METHODS: A cohort of 10,335 maternal-child dyads was established from electronic health records. Maternal weights at conception and delivery were estimated from weight trajectory fits u

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the dimension of deviation from appropriate gestational weight gain (GWG) and adverse maternofetal outcomes in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
METHODS: We performed a multicentric retrospective study based on the Portuguese GDM Database. Women were classified as within GWG, insufficient (IGWG) or excessive (EGWG) than the Institute of Medicine recommendations. EGWG and IGWG were calculated for each prepregnancy BMI category. Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) and macrosomia were defined as a birthweight more than the 90th percentile
