Gestural apraxia.

Gestural apraxia was first described in 1905 by Hugo Karl Liepmann. While his description is still used, the actual terms are often confusing. The cognitive approach using models proposes thinking of the condition in terms of production and conceptual knowledge. The underlying cognitive processes are still being debated, as are also the optimal ways to assess them. Several neuroimaging studies have revealed the involvement of a left-lateralized frontoparietal network, with preferential activation of the superior parietal lobe, intraparietal sulcus and inferior parietal cortex. The presence of

Imitation of gestures by disconnected hemispheres.

PU's corpus callosum was severed as a sequel of bleeding from an arteriovenous malformation. The lesion affects the truncus and the splenium and caused somatosensory and visual disconnection of the hemispheres. On clinical testing PU's left hand was apraxic for pantomime of object use but not for imitation. By contrast, when stimuli for imitation of meaningless hand and finger postures were presented tachistocopically to either the left or the right visual field, both hemispheres turned out to be apraxic in different ways. Imitation of hand postures was perfect for right-handed imitation of st

Discovering Dynamical Laws for Speech Gestures.

A fundamental challenge in the cognitive sciences is discovering the dynamics that govern behavior. Take the example of spoken language, which is characterized by a highly variable and complex set of physical movements that map onto the small set of cognitive units that comprise language. What are the fundamental dynamical principles behind the movements that structure speech production? In this study, we discover models in the form of symbolic equations that govern articulatory gestures during speech. A sparse symbolic regression algorithm is used to discover models from kinematic data on the

Imitation of meaningless gestures in normal aging.

While imitation of meaningless gestures is a gold standard in the assessment of apraxia in patients with either stroke or neurodegenerative diseases, little is known about potential age-related effects on this measure. A significant body of literature has indicated that different mechanisms (i.e., executive functioning, visuospatial skills, sensory integration, body knowledge, categorical apprehension) may underlie the performance depending on imitation conditions (i.e., finger/hand, uni-/bimanual, symmetric/asymmetric, crossed/uncrossed configurations). However, neither the effects of these c

Hemisphere asymmetries for imitation of novel gestures.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of imitation are traditionally considered as a symptom of apraxia, but defective imitation of gestures can contrast with intact performance of gestures to verbal command and vice versa. It thus seems worthwhile to explore the neural basis of imitation of gestures independently of other manifestations of apraxia. OBJECTIVE: To assess body part specificity of disturbances of imitation for meaningless gestures of fingers, hand, and foot. METHOD: Imitation of meaningless gestures involving fingers (internal hand configuration), hand (external hand position), or foot was exa

Effects of object familiarity on children's silent gestures.

When gesturing (with or without speech) actions done with objects, young children and adults with apraxia often produce a body-part-as-object (BPO), like an extended finger for a toothbrush. In contrast, older children and neurotypical adults often produce an imagined object (IO), like pretending to hold a toothbrush. The purpose of this study was to test whether IOs are produced when children have a rich conceptual understanding of the functions of an object. If so, children should produce more IOs (relative to BPOs) with familiar than with unfamiliar objects. Children between three and five

Referential delusions of communication and interpretations of gestures.

Gestures are an important aspect of non-verbal communication, but people with schizophrenia have poor comprehension of them. However, the tests of gesture comprehension that have been used present only scenes in which interpersonal meaning is communicated, though there is evidence that people with psychotic disorders tend to perceive communications where none were intended. Such mistakes about non-verbal behaviour are the hallmark of a subtype of delusions of reference identified as delusions of communication. Thus we hypothesised that patients with delusions of communication would tend to mis

Postural knowledge of transitive pantomimes and intransitive gestures.

Patients with apraxia are more impaired when performing transitive pantomimes than intransitive gestures. This dissociation might be related to the differences in movement complexity. Alternatively, the programs for intransitive gestures might be better defined, more widely distributed, or easier to activate than are those for transitive pantomimes. The purpose of this study was to test the complexity versus representational hypotheses. Twenty right-handed normal subjects both performed and discriminated correct from incorrect transitive pantomimes and intransitive gestures. The discrimination

Analyses of deficits in gestural pantomime.

The frequency and characteristics of apraxia in 63 stroke patients with left- or right-hemisphere damage were examined. Analyses focussing on five dimensions of gestural performance revealed an overall frequency of apraxia of 54% in patients with LHD and 30% in patients with RHD. Although both groups were impaired on the orientation and hand posture dimensions of performance, the patients with RHD exhibited significantly poorer performance on the location dimension and the patients with LHD on the action dimension. Analyses of intrahemispheric lesion localization implicated damage to subcortic

Velocity differences in laryngeal adduction and abduction gestures.

The periodic repetitions of laryngeal adduction and abduction gestures were uttered by 16 subjects. The movement of the cuneiform tubercles was tracked over time in the laryngoscopic recordings of these utterances. The adduction velocity and abduction velocity were determined objectively by means of a piecewise linear model fitted to the cuneiform tubercle trajectories. The abduction was found to be significantly faster than the adduction. This was interpreted in terms of the biomechanics and active control by the nervous system. The biomechanical properties could be responsible for a velocity

[Alterations in the imitation of gestures (conduction apraxia)].

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The aim of this presentation is to report the performance pattern of a patient who suffered ideomotor apraxia with a disorder pattern of the conduction apraxia (CA) type. This clinical picture was originally reported by Ochipa et al. in 1994 as an alteration in the pathway that joins the two lexicons; later, in 2000, Cubelli et al. claimed that there is no evidence for the existence of such a pathway and suggested that the symptoms were due to an alteration affecting the mechanisms governing visuomotor conversion. CASE REPORT: A 51 year old patient who, following a trau

Intransitive limb gestures and apraxia following unilateral stroke.

Apraxia is the loss of the ability to perform learned, skilled movements correctly, and is frequently attributed to left hemisphere damage (Heilman & Rothi, 1985). Recent work (Dumont, Ska, & Schiavetto, 1999) has shown a dissociation between transitive (tool based; e.g., hammering a nail) and intransitive (expressive/ communicative; e.g., waving goodbye) actions; however, few group studies have specifically addressed apraxia for intransitive gestures. The present investigation examined the frequency and severity of praxis errors related to the production of intransitive gestures in left (LHD)

Imitating gestures. A quantitative approach to ideomotor apraxia.

The ability to carry out movements on imitation was assessed with a 24-item test in uniterally hemisphere-damaged patients. On the basis of a cutoff score derived from the performances of 100 control patients, 20% of the right brain-damaged patients were calssified as apraxic. Most right brain-damaged patients were only mildly defective, but a few showed a striking impairment. In left brain-damaged patients apraxia was not only more frequent, but also much more severe and was nearly always associated with aphasia. However, the correlation between the motor and the language disorder was not par

Gesture deficits and apraxia in schizophrenia.

Aberrant performance of skilled action has long been noted in schizophrenia and relatedly, recent reports have demonstrated impaired use, performance, and perception of hand gestures in this group. Still, this deficit is not acknowledged as apraxia, which to the broader medical field, characterizes impairments in skilled actions. Understanding the relationship between apraxia and schizophrenia may shed an invaluable new perspective on disease mechanism, and highlight novel treatment opportunities as well. To examine this potential link, we reviewed the evidence for the types of praxis errors,

The neural substrate of gesture recognition.

Previous studies have linked action recognition with a particular pool of neurons located in the ventral premotor cortex, the posterior parietal cortex and the superior temporal sulcus (the mirror neuron system). However, it is still unclear if transitive and intransitive gestures share the same neural substrates during action-recognition processes. In the present study, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the cortical areas active during recognition of pantomimed transitive actions, intransitive gestures, and meaningless control actions. Perception of

Gestural communication in Alzheimer's disease.

Spontaneous communicative hand-arm gestures were evaluated in elderly patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and healthy controls (NC). Based on the notion that speech and gestures arise from common semantic-conceptual representations, qualitatively similar linguistic and gestural communicative impairments were expected in association with semantic memory impairment in AD. Despite equal quantity and rate of gesturing, AD and NC groups produced qualitatively different types of gestures. Patients with AD produced proportionately more referentially ambiguous gestures, fewer gestures refe
