The authors present a brief review of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath and three case reports. A discussion emphasizing the histologic characteristics of this lesion demonstrates the benign-to-malignant variability of these neoplastic growths. Special attention is directed to a case with aggressive histologic characteristics. Reexcision after surgery should be considered in cases where microscopic examination reveals a lesion with characteristics suggestive of potentially aggressive behavior.

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCT-TS) is a benign, slow-growing lesion originating from the tendon sheath or adjacent bursal tissue. We present a series of four histologically confirmed cases with atypical presentations in the foot and hand. Clinical features included a slow-growing, painless mass, often associated with prior trauma. All patients underwent surgical excision, with histopathology confirming GCT-TS. This report emphasizes the importance of considering GCT-TS in the differential diagnosis of soft-tissue swellings in tendon-rich areas and highlights the role of surgery as

A giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) is a benign, soft tissue (synovial membrane) tumor that frequently involves the fingers. However, the localized form of the GCTTS can be rarely seen in large joints such as knees, ankles, and shoulders. GCTTS may occur due to questionable etiology that includes inflammation, trauma, or chromosomal abnormalities. This is a case of a 30-year-old female, who presented with a painful mass in her right knee. Examination revealed a palpable, tender, slightly mobile mass lateral to the patella. MRI demonstrated a cystic lesion that underwent excision. D

BACKGROUND: In this article on giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTTS), we intend to summarize and analyze the clinical and pathological features of GCTTS hoping to improve clinical management and patient treatment.
METHODS: The study retrospectively reviewed 216 patients of GCTTS, registered at the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University from January 2010 to December 2020. These cases were diagnosed by surgical excision. The clinicopathological features and the prognosis were reviewed in the light of the current literature.
RESULTS: Of these 216 GCTTS patients, 72 were males (

OBJECTIVES: To retrospectively study on malignant giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (MGCTTS) in the hand, and to evaluate its clinical, histologic, immunohistochemical features and biologic evolution.
METHODS: Between January 1991 and December 2001, 10 patients with histologically proven MGCTTS were treated. The clinical material, radiographs and hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections were reviewed. Immunohistochemical studies and nuclear suspensions for flow cytometry were done on paraffin embedded tissue. All patients were followed up.
RESULTS: Three of 10 patients in which the diagnosis o

PURPOSE: Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) has a high recurrence after excision and can be a management challenge. Although experience with radiation therapy for GCTTS is limited, it is purported to control infiltrative cases and prevent recurrence. We describe our approach to primary and recurrent GCTTS, as well as our identification of infiltrative cases and their treatment with radiation therapy.
METHODS: We reviewed 58 patients (32 men and 26 women) with GCTTS in the hand excised at 1 center between 1998 and 2009. Mean age at the time of excision at our center was 50 years. A

Giant cell tumors of tendon sheath (GCTTS), also known as synovialomas, are benign tumors that originate from the fibrous sheath, or soft tissue, that surround tendons. These tumors predominantly present on the hand, but can present in the wrist, ankle, knee, elbow, or hip. The classic presentation of GCTTS is a painless, firm, slow growing mass present for weeks to months. The pathogenesis of GCTTS remains unknown. Histopathological examination of the tumor is required to confirm the diagnosis. The preferred treatment is surgical excision with long-term follow up. To our knowledge, this is th

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) is one of the most common benign soft tissue tumors in the extremities, and is frequently associated with bone abnormalities. Although extrinsic bone erosion is the most common bone abnormality associated with GCTTS, intraosseous invasion of GCTTS occurs rarely and may mimic a primary bone tumor, making diagnosis more challenging. We report an unusual imaging presentation of GCTTS mimicking a primary intramedullary metatarsal tumor and review the literature on the frequency of bone involvement of GCTTS.

Localized nodular tenosynovitis, better known as giant-cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTTS), is a common neoplasm that has a peak incidence in the fourth to sixth decades of life. Few reports exist elucidating the cytologic features of this lesion obtained by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The authors describe five patients, aged 8-50 years, in whom GCTTS was diagnosed by FNAB cytology. In four of the patients, the lesion was excised, and the FNAB diagnosis of GCTTS was confirmed; surgical excision is pending in one patient. A diagnosis of malignancy was not suggested in any of the patie

The aim of this study was to report a rare case of a giant cell tumor of the patellar tendon sheath. This indicates the diagnostic procedures and treatment options for giant cell tumors of the patellar tendon. This study reported a case of a 13-year-old male patient with a giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath. In our case, open arthrotomy was performed with complete surgical excision of the lesion. Histopathological examination revealed a giant cell tumor. At the last follow-up, 2 years after surgery, no complications were reported. The giant cell tumor of the patellar tendon sheath is an unc

Giant-cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) and pigmented villonodular synovitis belong to the same type of benign proliferative lesions originating in the synovia that usually affect the joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths. They frequently involve the hands, knees, ankles, and feet. We report a case of GCTTS in the external auditory canal in a 53-year-old woman who presented with hearing loss, fullness, and a sessile lesion protruding from the anterior wall of her external ear canal. The 1.5-cm diameter mass was spherical, well encapsulated, firm, and covered with normal skin. The lesion was

A giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) is 1 of the most common soft-tissue tumors of the hand and wrist, while the 2nd most frequent site is the ankle-foot complex. Although various solid tumors can develop in the axilla, GCTTS has not yet been reported. We describe the sonographic appearance of GCTTS in the axilla.

A 61-year-old woman presented with a 3-year history of painless soft-tissue mass on the right sole. The patient reported gradual growth, with a rapid increase in size over the past few months, leading to difficulty in walking. She had no history of past trauma. Examination revealed a 4-cm ovoid mass located over the ball of the foot. It was firm in consistency, with well-defined margins, a smooth surface, and an overlying normal skin (Figure 1). An ultrasound image revealed an eccentric, hypoechoic, nonvascular subcutaneous lobular mass. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the foot revealed

The giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) is a benign nodular tumor that is found on the tendon sheath of hands and feet. It is the second most common tumor of the hand, next only to ganglion cysts. Several hypotheses were formulated about the etiological factors of these tumors, but still, there is not a common opinion on etiology, prognostic factors, and recurrence rate. We report a case of GCTTS in a young male where a lesion was identified in his left thumb. Although marginal excision is the treatment of choice, it is often difficult to perform due to the location and the strict ad

Giant cell tumors of tendon sheath (GCTTS) represent a localised form of pigmented villonodular synovitis. They are usually found in the hand (80% of cases) where it represents the second most common tumor of the soft parts after the ganglion cyst. Its surgical treatment is sometimes difficult because of local extension and the invasion of vital digital structures. We report a retrospective study over 10 years of 32 cases of GCTTS with an average age of 35 years and a sex-ratio of 1. The reason for consultation was the presence of a digital mass, associated with an impairment of finger flexion

BACKGROUND: Localized tenosynovial giant cell tumor (GCT) or giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTTS), is a benign nodular lesion that arises from the synovium of the tendon sheath of the hands and foot. GCTTS is characterized by the presence of multinucleated giant cells and proliferation of synovial-like mononuclear cells. A clinical diagnosis of GCTTS is kept as a differential when a firm, nodular mass shows decreased signal intensity on both T1-and T2-weighted MR imaging. Treatment is usually marginal excision of the mass.

Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath is infrequently documented in the foot and even less near the ankle. This case report involves such a tumor of the flexor hallucis longus tendon presenting at the posterior ankle. Diagnosis was aided by magnetic resonance imaging, and treatment consisted of complete surgical excision. Pathologic examination verified the diagnosis of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath, and follow-up magnetic resonance imaging revealed no remnants or recurrence of tumor 1 year after surgery.
