Bone wax has been used for years by surgeons as a hemostatic agent to prevent bleeding from bone surfaces. Though the effectiveness of bone wax as a hemostatic agent while acting as a tamponade is well known, it is not without its complications. By means of antimacrophage sera it is possible to demonstrate partially common antigenicity of monocytes with peritoneal macrophages, reticulum cells capable of phagocytosis, mast cells and Kupper's cells. The authors continued these studies important for the explantation of cytogenetical interrelations using a special method on epitheloid and giant cells of rats. Osteoclasts are bone-resorbing cells that play a pivotal role in bone remodeling. Osteoclasts form large multinuclear giant cells by fusion of mononuclear osteoclasts. How cell fusion is mediated, however, is unclear. A Sputnik lens implant removed after five years because of bullous keratopathy exhibits a dense covering of its Supramid anterior staves with large foreign body giant cells, while its Prolene loops and Polymethylmethacrylate optics have attracted only few of these cell units. The glass-membrane-like component of the reactive membrane also shows significant differences on the different parts of this implant. Epidermal inclusion cysts often occur as a result of traumatic implantation of epidermal cells into dermal tissue. The epidermal cells within the dermis can continue to grow and lead to the production of a lipid- and keratin-filled cyst, which can erode into bone and adjacent tissues. The authors present a case of bilaterally symmetrical epidermal inclusion cysts that occurred separately over a 10-year period. A brief review of the literature is also presented.

AIMS: To assess the incidence of foreign body giant cell reactions and ossification in benign/melanocytic naevi; and to examine their pathological features to gain an insight into their pathogenesis.
METHODS: Intradermal (n = 185) and compound naevi (n = 110) from a routine histology service, together with 60 naevi submitted to an ophthalmic pathologist, were examined for foreign body reactions and ossification. Additional cases were identified prospectively in the course of routine reporting. The clinical and pathological features of positive cases were assessed.

A 69-year-old man with a 0.6 cm yellowish polypoid lesion in the lateral soft palate for 2 years is presented. Histological examination of the tumor revealed a small, well-differentiated, mucoepidermoid carcinoma dominated by densely packed cholesterol clefts in association with an exuberant foreign-body reaction with several giant cells. The tumor entity 'mucoepidermoid carcinoma with foreign-body giant cells' might be differentiated from 'mucoepidermoid carcinoma with an osteoclast-like giant cell stromal reaction' because differences in pathogenesis and tumor behavior are assumed.

A patient with a known epidermoid tumor presented with a new large ring-enhancing mass adjacent to the cyst. Histopathology showed foreign body giant cell reaction adjacent to the epidermoid cyst.
