While plaque-induced gingivitis is one of the most common human inflammatory diseases, several non-plaque-induced gingival diseases are less common but often of major significance for patients. The non-plaque-induced gingival lesions are often manifestations of systemic conditions, but they may also represent pathologic changes limited to gingival tissues. A classification is proposed, based on the etiology of the lesions and includes: Genetic/Developmental disorders; Specific infections; Inflammatory and immune conditions and lesions; Reactive processes; Neoplasms; Endocrine, Nutritional and

Gingival diseases are a diverse family of complex and distinct pathological entities found within the gingiva that are the result of a variety of etiologies. There are several clinical characteristics common to all gingival diseases and these features include clinical signs of inflammation, signs and symptoms that are confined to the gingiva, reversibility of the disease by removing the etiology, the presence of bacterial laden plaque to initiate and/or exacerbate the severity of the disease and a possible role as a precursor for attachment loss around teeth. Defining and classifying gingival

Children and adolescents are subject to a wide variety of gingival infections. Epidemiological studies indicate that gingivitis of varying severity is nearly a universal finding in children and adolescents. The shorter life span of the primary dentition may be the reason why in general little attention is given to periodontitis in children. Since early diagnosis is important for successful treatment, it is imperative that children receive a periodontal examination as part of their routine dental visit. Furthermore destructive periodontal disease occurs in children with certain systemic disease

BACKGROUND: Gingival expression of autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBD) may be inaugural, exclusive or dominant (mucous membrane pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris). Histology and direct immunofluorescence are essential to diagnosis. The location of the biopsy and the surgical technique determine the histological quality of the tissue sample. However, gingival tissue is often considered fragile and easily impaired during biopsy. We suggest an original biopsy protocol for the gingival papillae that is simple to perform, non-iatrogenic, and readily accessible to all practitioners who usually treat AIB

BACKGROUND: Leukotriene B4 (LTB4), a product of the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism, exhibits numerous activities that can account for most of the features of host responses seen in periodontal diseases. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of LTB4 in the pathogenesis of specific periodontal diseases.
METHODS: LTB4 levels were investigated in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and gingival tissue (GT) samples of 10 patients with chronic periodontitis (CP), 12 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP), 6 patients with localized aggressive period

BACKGROUND: Platelet-activating factor (PAF), a potent phospholipid mediator of inflammatory and immune reactions, is involved in a variety of biological responses seen in periodontal diseases. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of PAF in the pathogenesis of specific periodontal diseases.
METHODS: PAF levels were investigated in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and gingival tissue (GT) samples of 12 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP), 6 patients with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP), 10 patients with chronic periodontitis (CP), 6 with gingiviti

BACKGROUND: Although the oral manifestations of Crohn disease are well-established, there is little specific documentation of the gingival involvement.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors describe four patients with significant gingival involvement and identify clinical signs and symptoms of the disease involving the gingivae, along with other oral manifestations. Patients had persistent gingival lesions manifesting as pustular ulcerations, erythema, swelling and cobblestoning. The authors also discuss the differential diagnosis, treatment options and prognostic factors.

Background and Objectives: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is a clinical term indicating "peeling gums" and is associated with different oral manifestations. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between DG and autoimmune blistering mucocutaneous diseases (ABMD) with oral manifestations. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study including 88 patients diagnosed between 1998 and 2019 with ABMD (intraepithelial and subepithelial autoimmune blistering diseases) was performed at the Oral Medicine Department, Faculty of Dentistry, "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Buc

The case described is that of a 9-yr-old girl presenting with aspartylglycosaminuria. Diagnosis of this lysosomal storage disease was guided by histologic study of gingival specimen sampled in the course of dental care. Transmitted electron microscopy (TEM) revealed many vesicles and cellular inclusions, altered collagenic formations, associated with abnormal extracellular matrix. Gingival biopsy is easily performed, is noniatrogenic, leaves nor scar, and could be properly used to help diagnose metabolic diseases in children.

Desquamative gingivitis is a clinical finding with several potential etiologies. Among the most common are oral lichen planus, cicatricial pemphigoid, and pemphigus vulgaris, though various other differential diagnoses exist. The presence of desquamative gingivitis often results in poor oral hygiene, which can have downstream consequences, including periodontitis and tooth loss. Though certain mucosal findings may be suggestive of a particular diagnosis, a thorough history, physical examination, and appropriate dermato- and immunopathologic assessment is necessary for narrowing this broad diff

Decorative crowns for the teeth have gained a resurgence of popularity among adolescents. Similar to other forms of body art found in the mouth, these trendy crowns may be associated with a variety of oral complications. This case report describes a localized form of necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, exacerbated by a cosmetic gold crown in a teenage girl. Healthier artistic options are discussed to replace this flashy dental fad.

BACKGROUND: Clinical and radiographic measures are gold standards for diagnosing periodontitis but offer little information regarding the pathogenesis of the disease. We hypothesized that a comparison of gene expression signatures between healthy and diseased gingival tissues would provide novel insights in the pathobiology of periodontitis and would inform the design of future studies.
METHODS: Ninety systemically healthy non-smokers with moderate to advanced periodontitis (63 with chronic periodontitis and 27 with aggressive periodontitis) each contributed at least two diseased interproxima

Gingival biopsy specimens from eight patients exhibiting a localized, erythematous, or mixed erythematous/leukoplakic gingivitis that was refractory to conventional periodontal therapy were examined histologically and by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Histologic examination revealed variable numbers of small, usually subtle, sometimes equivocal, and occasionally obvious foci of granulomatous inflammation. Special stains for fungi and acid-fast bacilli were consistently negative. In all cases, the granulomatous foci contained particles of foreign material that were often inconspicuous a

In an attempt to determine the frequency of desquamative gingivitis (DG) in pemphigus vulgaris (PV), bullous pemphigoid (BP), cicatricial pemphigoid (CP), and lichen planus (LP), a large series of patients examined and classified in each group during the years 1972 to 1981 were included in this study. Analysis of the clinical data revealed that, of the four skin diseases, CP manifests as DG in 63.6 percent of the cases. Desquamative gingival lesions are less frequent in LP (25 percent) and in PV (18.4 percent). The great majority of DG patients were females (72.9 percent). Identification of th
