Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm: a rare case of gingival lesion with leukaemic presentation.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare haematological malignancy with an aggressive clinical course. It has been recognised as a distinct entity in the WHO 2008 classification of haematolymphoid neoplasm. This disease usually presents with cutaneous involvement as the first manifestation, with subsequent or simultaneous spread to bone marrow and peripheral blood with leukaemic dissemination. Gingival lesion as the first manifestation, in the absence of a cutaneous lesion, is an uncommon presentation of this rare disease. We report a case of an elderly woman, aged 84 yea

Biopsied gingival lesions in northern Jordanians: A retrospective analysis over 10 years.

The frequency and distribution of 183 consecutive cases of biopsied gingival lesions from northern Jordanians are presented here. Lesions were analyzed for age and sex of subject and location and type of lesion. Neoplasms accounted for 9% of biopsies (7% benign, 3% malignant). The most frequent neoplasm was peripheral ossifying fibroma. The maximum number of benign neoplasms occurred in patients aged 20 to 39 years, and malignant neoplasms did not occur in patients younger than 30 years. Nonneoplastic lesions accounted for 91% of cases; they comprised nine types, with pyogenic granuloma being

Biopsied non-dental plaque-induced gingival diseases in a Chinese population: a single-institute retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: While inflammatory diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis induced by dental plaque biofilms constitute the majority of gingival lesions, gingiva can also be affected by a variety of diseases with aetiologies different from bacterial biofilms. The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze the frequency and distribution of non-dental plaque-induced gingival diseases (NDPIGDs) in the Chinese population in a single institute. METHODS: A total of 6859 samples of biopsied gingival diseases during the period 2000-2019 were obtained from the Department of Pathology, Peking U

Non-plaque-induced gingival diseases.

While plaque-induced gingivitis is one of the most common human inflammatory diseases, several non-plaque-induced gingival diseases are less common but often of major significance for patients. The non-plaque-induced gingival lesions are often manifestations of systemic conditions, but they may also represent pathologic changes limited to gingival tissues. A classification is proposed, based on the etiology of the lesions and includes: Genetic/Developmental disorders; Specific infections; Inflammatory and immune conditions and lesions; Reactive processes; Neoplasms; Endocrine, Nutritional and

Managing misdiagnosed gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) with occult symptoms: A report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: importance: Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) is a rare neoplasm. GSCC has nonspecific features which commonly misdiagnosed with a simple toothache. CASE PRESENTATION: These are two cases; the first one describes a 62-year-old female who presented with pain in her right posterior mandibular teeth, and she was misdiagnosed with periodontal disease, but later histopathological tests confirmed gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC). Consequently, the patient underwent surgery, and the gingival tumor was totally resected. Afterward, the patient was receiving chemotherapy, and

A diagnostic survey of biopsied gingival lesions.

PURPOSE: The primary objective of this study was to determine the most commonly biopsied gingival lesions in a university-based school of dentistry biopsy service. METHODS: The biopsy service at the Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Dentistry accumulated 30,056 cases during a 24-year period (1969 to 1992). Microcomputer technology was used to sort these cases to study the gingival lesions including the incidence of neoplasm and epidemiologic factors of age, gender, and race. RESULTS: Of the 30,056 biopsies submitted for diagnosis, 3,859 (12.8%) were taken from the gingiva.

Gingival infiltration in acute monoblastic leukaemia.

Acute myeloid leukaemias (AML) are aggressive haematopoietic neoplasms that, if untreated, can lead to death within days. Up to 40% of presenting patients show evidence of extramedullary involvement (EMI) at diagnosis. EMI is reportedly most prevalent in myelo-monoblastic and monoblastic subtypes of AML (M4 and M5 according to FAB classification) and can present as leukaemic infiltrates in many sites including gingival enlargement and mucosal and skin nodules. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival enlargement secondary to leukaemic infiltration. This case shows the importan

Metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from breast mimicking a pyogenic granuloma in the gingiva: a case report.

Mucin-producing adenocarcinomas (MAC) are an extremely rare, indistinct group of neoplasm having either a salivary gland origin or with prominent glandular component. The diagnosis is chiefly based on the histological aspect conjoined with immunohistochemical evaluation as clinico-radiographical features are non-specific. It can arise as a primary metastasis to soft tissues, most commonly from either lung, breast, kidney, or colon. This paper reports a 51-year-old woman with buccolingual gingival swelling having a final diagnosis of metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from the breast. A tissue

Analysis of gingival biopsies in the Gujarati population: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Biopsy is an important diagnostic tool used in the diagnosis of lesions ranging from simple non-neoplastic, tumor-like lesions to malignancies, and is often the only way to diagnose oral lesions and diseases. The gingiva is the most common site for some kind of irritation or low-grade injury, resulting in localized overgrowths that are considered to be reactive and non-neoplastic lesions. This aim of this study is to analyze the frequency and distribution of gingival lesions in the Gujarati population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, gingival biopsies submitted

SATB2 is frequently expressed in ossifying and non-ossifying peripheral oral fibroma of the gingival region but not in reactive fibromatous lesions from other intraoral sites.

Ossifying and non-ossifying peripheral oral fibromas (POF) of the gingival and alveolar mucosa are localized, cellular, small fibrous nodular lesions likely resulting from diverse external/ internal physical and chemical irritation or injuries. A central nidus of metaplastic woven bone characterizes and defines the ossifying variant. The inherent tendency of these lesions to ossify remains elusive. We herein analyze SATB2 expression as osteoblastic transcription and differentiation factor in 28 gingival POFs (10 of them ossifying) and compare them to 28 fibrous lesions from different non-gingi

Recurrent gingival fibrous lesions: comparison of 2 cases and potential need for additional classification.

Historically, the classification of localized gingival fibrous lesions has been inconsistent, leading to multiple naming schemes and confusion among pathologists. Currently, lesions are broadly grouped into localized hyperplastic lesions and true neoplasms. Although some cases are clearly defined histologically (i.e., peripheral ossifying fibroma, peripheral odontogenic fibroma), another set of "reactive" fibrous lesions exhibit overlapping histologic features including nondistinctive fibrosis and inflammation. This group can exhibit recurrence, classically related to a local stimulus. However

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma in minor salivary gland.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma is a rare neoplasm usually confused with other neoplasms in the salivary glands region. It has great similarity with the breast carcinoma. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival submucosal bleeding and lesion, with the initial histopathological examination revealing salivary gland neoplasm of low crane. Computed tomography revealed the lesion near the tooth 27, with extension to the floor of the left maxillary sinus and to the palate mucosa. Resection of the infra-structure was performed, with a diagnosis of breast cancer secretory carcin

Isolated gingival metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma mimicking a pyogenic granuloma.

BACKGROUND: Oral metastatic tumours are uncommon and account for approximately 1% of malignant oral neoplasms. RESULTS: If the cases where the oral location is in the jawbone, with secondary invasion to the oral soft tissue, are excluded, only 10 cases of gingival metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have been previously reported in the literature. The clinicopathologic features of an HCC with gingival metastasis are reported. Six months after the multicentric HCC and alcoholic cirrhosis was diagnosed, a 65-year-old male patient presented a rapidly growing, lobulated and reddish exo
