[Influence of systemic metronidazole therapy on the flora of the periodontal gingival pocket].

The influence of a systemic metronidazole therapy in case of marked marginal periodontitis on clinical parameter and the subjective pocket flora was examined. The medication was done at the time of recolonization after mechanical local therapy. Then a follow-up examination was carried out over 12 weeks. Metronidazole has influence on clinical parameter and the composition of the subgingival flora so that at a strict indication the metronidazole use in combination with a mechanical local therapy seems to be useful.

Efficacy of a topical anesthetic on pain and unpleasantness during scaling of gingival pockets.

The efficacy of a topical anesthetic on pain and unpleasantness provoked by scaling of gingival pockets was investigated in 20 patients with mild chronic periodontitis. A eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) and a placebo cream, both occluded by Orahesive Oral Bandages, were applied in a balanced, randomized, double-blind, split-mouth design, which enabled within-subject comparison of the anesthetic and the placebo in the upper and the lower jaw. Pretreatment interviews showed that approximately two-thirds of the patients considered gingival scaling to be associated with some degree of

Three-Dimensional Humanized Model of the Periodontal Gingival Pocket to Study Oral Microbiome.

The oral cavity contains distinct microenvironments that serve as oral barriers, such as the non-shedding surface of the teeth (e.g., enamel), the epithelial mucosa and gingival tissue (attached gingiva) where microbial communities coexist. The interactions and balances between these communities are responsible for oral tissue homeostasis or dysbiosis, that ultimately dictate health or disease. Disruption of this equilibrium can lead to chronic inflammation and permanent tissue damage in the case of chronic periodontitis. There are currently no experimental tissue models able to mimic the stru

Enhancing gingival biotype through chorion membrane with innovative step in periodontal pocket therapy.

A thick gingival biotype is a requisite for good periodontal health. It has important role in resisting trauma and subsequent gingival recession. The gingival thickness is a significant predictor of clinical outcome of periodontal surgeries. Various surgical procedures are used to increase the gingival thickness. The present study incorporated the innovative step of placement of chorion membrane to objectively evaluate the increase in thickness of gingival biotype during periodontal pocket therapy. The patients in age group between 25 and 45 years with chronic periodontitis, indicated for flap

Location of probe tip in bleeding and non-bleeding pockets with minimal gingival inflammation.

In the present study the location of the probe tip was studied on human teeth scheduled for extraction for periodontal reasons. Prior to extraction all teeth were subjected to initial treatment consisting of plaque control and removal of supra- and subgingival deposits. Results showed that: 1) 43% of the pockets examined were still bleeding on probing after treatment 2) bleeding pockets were deeper than non-bleeding pockets 3) in non-bleeding pockets the probe tip was located more accurately at the attachment level than in bleeding pockets.

Subperiosteal connective tissue grafts for pocket reduction and preservation of gingival esthetics: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies and recent histological evidence following mucogingival surgery for the treatment of gingival recession have documented that when closely adapted to a previously exposed root surface, connective tissue is capable of forming a new attachment. Despite these findings, no clinical tests have been conducted to examine the ability of connective tissue to reduce probing depth (PD) and increase clinical attachment levels (CAL) when it is implanted into periodontal osseous defects. The purpose of this paper is to report the clinical results on a patient following 2 subperio

Effect of retention of gingival sulcular epithelium on attachment and pocket depth after periodontal surgery.

Both the modified Widman flap and the intrasulcular incision technique produced significant and similar reductions in pocket depth and increases in attachment. Loss of attachment occurred where the initial pocket depth was less than 3 mm. Both techniques resulted in significant and similar increases in gingival recession. Neither technique affected tooth mobility or plaque scores to a clinically important degree. Historically, the necessity for removal of the sulcular epithelium in the course of periodontal therapy is a widely accepted tenet. This study fails to clinically validate this concep

Correlation between probing pocket depth and neutrophil counts in dental plaque, saliva, and gingival crevicular fluid.

OBJECTIVE: Neutrophils play a critical role in the innate immune response. There are no studies that have correlated the neutrophils in plaque, saliva, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) to probing pocket depth (PPD) and to each other in periodontally healthy and diseased subjects. The aim of the present investigation was to assess and correlate the neutrophil levels in dental plaque, saliva, and GCF in periodontally healthy and diseased subjects. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Forty-five subjects were recruited. They were divided into three groups based on the Gingival Index (GI) and the Russell Per

Semilunar Papilla Preservation Flap Technique in Combination with Chorion Membrane for Pocket Reduction and Gingival Recession Coverage.

An unavoidable consequence of periodontal flap procedure is gingival recession (GR). Achieving both pocket depth reduction and GR coverage remains a challenge to periodontists. The present case report provides a new innovative technique that will enable all clinicians to achieve pocket depth reduction as well as recession coverage in esthetic zone. The clinical parameters that were assessed at baseline, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months are probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), height of GR (HGR), and gingival biotype. The patient reported with a faulty post and core with crown in

Increased tooth brushing frequency is associated with reduced gingival pocket bacterial diversity in patients with intracranial aneurysms.

OBJECTIVES: appropriate assessment of exposure to air pollution is crucial for the estimation of adverse effects on human health, both in the short and long term. Within the BIGEPI project, different indicators of long-term exposure to air pollution, in association with mortality by cause, were tested within the Italian longitudinal metropolitan studies (LMS). This allowed an evaluation of differences in effect estimates using the different exposure indicators. DESIGN: closed cohort. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: subjects aged >=30, who took part in the 2011 census, residents in 5 cities (Turin,

Gingival bleeding on probing: relationship to change in periodontal pocket depth and effect of sodium hypochlorite oral rinse.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the potential of gingival bleeding on probing to serve as a predictor of future periodontal breakdown. It also assessed the ability of 0.25% sodium hypochlorite twice-a-week oral rinse to convert periodontal pockets showing bleeding on probing to nonbleeding sites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed as a randomized, single-blinded, clinical trial in parallel groups. Seven periodontitis patients rinsed twice-weekly for 3 mo with 15 mL of a fresh solution of 0.25% sodium hypochlorite, and five periodontitis patients rinsed with water. Th

Adhesion and invasion of Candida albicans from periodontal pockets of patients with chronic periodontitis and diabetes to gingival human fibroblasts.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate clinical isolates of Candida albicans, particularly their adhesion to and invasion of gingival human fibroblasts in culture and to measure nitric oxide concentration (NO) produced by fibroblasts in the presence of these yeasts. Sixteen strains of C. albicans isolated from patients with chronic periodontitis and diabetes mellitus type II were divided on the basis of phenotypic tests into two groups, i.e., highly or weakly hydrophobic. Primary cultures of human fibroblasts were isolated from gingival biopsies and after subsequent subcultures, the cel

Use of a periodontal resective procedure (proximal wedge technique) for treating gingival and periodontal pockets of mandibular canine teeth in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the ability of a periodontal resective procedure (the Proximal Wedge Technique) to improve the long-term health of the mandibular canines by reducing probing depths immediately post-surgery via targeted tissue recontouring and precise debridement. The technique aims to enhance periodontal health and stabilize the supporting structures of strategically important adjacent canine teeth, including alveolar bone, rather than relying solely on mandibular incisor extractions with simple closure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective records review compiled da

The relationship between chewing sticks (Miswak) and periodontal health. 2. Relationship to plaque, gingivitis, pocket depth, and attachment loss.

For centuries, chewing sticks have been used as a tooth-cleaning device. One of the most commonly used types is known as the Miswak. Despite its common use, few studies have examined possible effects on the gingiva and the surrounding structures. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Miswak and periodontal health. The incisors, canines, and premolars were examined in 236 patients. All patients were interviewed regarding their demographic data, oral hygiene habits, and use of Miswak. Clinical examination included scoring of plaque, gingival inflammation, pocket depth

Associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d and periodontal pocketing and gingival bleeding: results of a study in a non-smoking population in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Apart from the effects of vitamin D on bone metabolism, it is also known for its immunomodulatory properties. However, so far, it is not clear whether serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] exerts any beneficial effect on the periodontium. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the serum level of 25(OH)D is related to periodontal condition, measured by means of pocketing and gingival bleeding. METHODS: This cross-sectional study is based on a non-smoking subpopulation without diabetes of the Finnish Health 2000 Survey (N = 1,262). Periodontal condition was measured as
