Ginsenosides: potential therapeutic agents against hepatic fibrosis.

Hepatic fibrosis, for which no effective pharmacological interventions currently exist, is characterized by progressive scarring and architectural distortion. The pathogenesis involves excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix components, predominantly synthesized by activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). HSCs can be activated by inflammatory signals and injured hepatocytes, processes linked to intestinal microbiota dysbiosis. Therefore, HSCs and associated pathways constitute promising therapeutic targets for antifibrotic strategies. Recent evidence suggests that ginsenosides, principa

Antiallergic activity of ginseng and its ginsenosides.

In this study, we measured the antiallergic activities of ginsenosides isolated from the root of Panax ginseng ( Araliaceae), and of their metabolites, as produced by human intestinal bacteria. Compound K, which was identified as a main metabolite, had the most potent inhibitory activity on beta-hexosaminidase release from RBL-2H3 cells and on the PCA reaction. The inhibitory activity of compound K was more potent than that of disodium cromoglycate, one of the commercial anti-allergic drugs. This compound demonstrated a membrane stabilizing action on differential scanning calorimetry. However,

Ginsenosides Rg1, Rb1 and rare ginsenosides: Promising candidate agents for Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease and network pharmacology analysis.

Ginseng has been commonly used as a traditional Chinese medicine in Asian countries for thousands of years. Ginsenosides are the main pharmacologically active ingredients isolated from ginseng and have neuroprotective effects in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). To summarise and investigate the protective roles of ginsenosides and their underlying mechanisms in PD and AD, we used ''Ginsenoside", ''Parkinson's disease", ''Alzheimer's disease", ''anti-inflammatory", ''antioxidant", and ''apoptosis" as keywords to search a

Inhibition of influenza A virus infection by ginsenosides.

Influenza viruses cause mild to severe respiratory infections in humans. Due to efficient means of transmission, the viruses infect human population on a large scale. Apart from vaccines, antiviral drugs are used to control infection; neuraminidase inhibitors are thought to be the first choice of treatment, particularly for severe cases. Rapidly evolving and emerging influenza viruses with increased frequency of viral resistance to these drugs stress the need to explore novel antiviral compounds. In this study, we investigated antiviral activity of ginseng extract and ginsenosides, the ginseng

Ginsenosides in Liver Fibrosis: Pharmacological Actions and Therapeutic Potential.

Liver fibrosis (LF) represents a critical pathological stage in the progression of various chronic liver diseases, and is characterized by the sustained activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM). These processes ultimately lead to cirrhosis and even hepatocellular carcinoma. Current therapeutic strategies for LF primarily rely on etiological interventions and supportive management. However, due to the complex pathogenesis of LF, involving multiple interconnected signaling pathways, effective and specific antifibrotic therapies remain lac

The inhibitory effects of ginsenosides on periodontitis pathogenic bacteria.

Periodontitis is mainly caused by bacterial destruction of periodontal tissue in dental plaque. Commonly used antibiotic treatment has some shortcomings, such as incomplete sterilization, drug resistance, and local flora imbalance. Because of this, there is a need to identify safe and non-drug resistant health products with high antibacterial activity. Ginsenosides, the primary active component in ginseng, have been shown to be antibacterial. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of ginsenosides on Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, along with their structure

Ginsenosides in cancer: Targeting cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

Despite the existence of extensive clinical research and novel therapeutic treatments, cancer remains undefeated and the significant cause of death worldwide. Cancer is a disease in which growth of cells goes out of control, being also able to invade other parts of the body. Cellular division is strictly controlled by multiple checkpoints like G1/S and G2/M which, when dysregulated, lead to uncontrollable cell division. The current remedies which are being utilized to combat cancer are monoclonal antibodies, chemotherapy, cryoablation, and bone marrow transplant etc. and these have also been g

Ginsenoside Rd and ginsenoside Re offer neuroprotection in a novel model of Parkinson's disease.

Ginsenosides are the main active constituents of Panax ginseng. Ginsenoside Re is one of the major ginsenosides; whereas hydrolysis products such as Rd appear to have higher biological activity though are present in smaller amounts. Ginsenosides, from their early use in folk medicine to modern studies, appear to exert beneficial actions against aging and even neurodegenerative disorders. Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized by a profound loss of midbrain dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) exerts

Comparative pharmacokinetics of total ginsenosides between young and aging mice.

INTRODUCTION: Ginsenosides, the primary bioactive constituents of ginseng, are widely recognized as popular natural products with anti-aging properties. However, they generally exhibit poor oral bioavailability. Moreover, existing pharmacokinetic studies have predominantly focused on young animal models, leaving a critical gap in understanding how aging alters the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of these compounds. This study aims to elucidate the multi-component pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution profiles of total ginsenosides following oral administration in both yo

Therapeutic potential of ginsenosides in circadian rhythm-based skin disorders.

The circadian rhythm, a biological system all living organisms possess, has become increasingly important as sleep patterns become more irregular. Circadian rhythms affect various cell types (fibroblasts, fat cells, muscles, etc.) and organs (the liver, pancreas, gut, etc.). This review focuses on the effects of the circadian rhythm on skin physiology. Under normal conditions, the circadian rhythm is involved in maintaining skin health, including DNA repair and wound healing. Disrupted circadian rhythm can cause skin disorders, including hyperpigmentation, melanoma, skin aging, sunburn, impair
