Glaucoma drainage implants provide a useful option in the management of complicated glaucomas for which the risk of failure of conventional filtering surgery is high. The basic design of these devices is similar; a silicone tube shunts aqueous humor from the anterior chamber to a fibrous capsule surrounding a synthetic plate or band positioned at the equatorial region of the globe. The capsule serves as a reservoir for aqueous drainage. Drainage implants have been used in the treatment of various refractory glaucomas, including those associated with aphakia and pseudophakia, prior unsuccessful

Glaucoma drainage devices (tubes, GDI or GDD) are nowadays an important surgical option in the treatment of refractory glaucoma. They are frequently used in cases where previous glaucoma surgery has failed or in patients with a history of conjunctival scarring where other procedures are contraindicated or simply not possible. This article looks at the evolution of glaucoma drainage implants from the very beginning to the multiple designs, experiences and research studies that have made tubes an essential part of the armamentarium of modern glaucoma surgeons. The article describes the first con

Approximately, one fifth of primary congenital glaucoma patients fail primary surgery. Also, some pediatric glaucomas respond poorly to goniotomy or trabeculectomy. In these situations, clinicians often choose trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C or a drainage implant as a surgical treatment. Glaucoma drainage device implantation is a useful option in refractory patients. When other surgical treatments have a poor prognosis for success, prior conventional surgery fails, or significant conjunctival scarring precludes filtration surgery, glaucoma drainage implant may effectively control intraocular p

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested that there are racial differences in the outcome of conventional filtration surgery. This study aims to evaluate the outcome of glaucoma drainage implants in Asian eyes with complicated glaucoma and to determine whether there are racial differences in the results of such implant surgery compared to previous reports in non-Asian patients.
DESIGN: The study design was a retrospective review of all patients with more than 6-months' follow-up after glaucoma implant surgery at the Singapore National Eye Centre between January 1993 and August 1996.

PURPOSE: To describe the outcomes of eyes that have undergone a second glaucoma drainage implant (GDI) surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective review of eyes that underwent a second GDI surgery from 2006 to 2013 was conducted. Primary outcome measures included intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction and success rates. Secondary outcome measures included glaucoma medication use, visual acuity, and number of reoperations. Success was defined as 6 ≤ IOP ≤ 21 with at least 20% IOP reduction, and no increase in the number of glaucoma medications from baseline at 3 months of follow-up or more.
RESULTS: Six

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to critically compare the various glaucoma drainage implants in popular use.
RECENT FINDINGS: Glaucoma drainage implants are being increasingly utilized in the surgical management of glaucoma. Comparisons between the various drainage implants are difficult because most clinical data are derived from retrospective studies with different study populations, follow-up periods, and criteria defining success. The type of glaucoma under treatment is a major factor influencing surgical outcomes. The resistance to aqueous flow through glaucoma drainage

Glaucoma drainage implant (GDI) surgery represents a significant advance in the treatment of refractory glaucomas. Recent randomized clinical trials have compared the efficacy and safety of this technique to standard trabeculectomy. Several types of implants are currently available and differ in surface area, shape, composition, and presence or absence of a flow-restricting valve. A prospective, randomized clinical trial comparing two types of GDIs is ongoing. GDIs may be placed in the anterior chamber, ciliary sulcus, or pars plana. Several types of patch graft material may be utilized to pre

Implantation of glaucoma drainage devices has become a standard procedure in various forms of intractable glaucoma. Indications include extensive conjunctival scanning at the upper limbal area, neovascular glaucoma (in addition to pars plana vitrectomy and endolasercoagulation), and secondary glaucoma due to uveitis or trauma. Implanting a glaucoma drainage device is an alternative to trabeculectomy with antimetabolites in young patients in whom delayed complications such as bleb-related endophthalmitis are more likely to occur. Intermediate-term success rates ranging from 70% to 90% are encou

UNLABELLED: The combination of glaucoma and cataract occurs in 14.6-76% of cases, according to various sources. The goal of surgical treatment for these patients is to improve visual function while simultaneously reducing intraocular pressure. Due to the wide variety of proposed surgical methods, there is no consensus on the optimal management strategy for such patients.
PURPOSE: This study evaluates the hypotensive effect and visual function outcomes of combined surgery for complicated cataract and glaucoma using the mesh drain made of digeland the xenocollagen drain.

BACKGROUND: The STARflo Glaucoma Device (iSTAR Medical, Wavre, Belgium) offers a new approach to bleb-free filtering surgery in which the intraocular pressure (IOP) is lowered by supporting outflow of the aqueous humor into the suprachoroidal space.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: On the basis of a case series of 9 patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) unmanageable by drug-based treatment, intra- and postoperative experiences with the implant are presented. The implant, the implantation procedure, and the first results 6 months postoperatively are described.
RESULTS: No intraoperative complications

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate long-term efficacy of a second glaucoma drainage device (GDD) versus cyclophotocoagulation (CPC) after failure of primary drainage implant.
METHODS: This is a non-randomised, retrospective cohort study. A chart review was conducted of patients who underwent GDD surgery between July 1986 and November 2012 requiring further glaucoma procedures for intraocular pressure (IOP) control. An additional GDD was placed in 15 eyes, while 32 eyes underwent CPC. The main outcome measurement was IOP control and/or time to failure of secondary intervention (IOP >18 mm Hg on two

PURPOSE: Cataract surgery has been reported to adversely affect the IOP control in eyes with the glaucoma drainage implant (GDI). One reason might be the flow of lens debris/viscoelastic material through the GDI tube into the bleb. This pilot study was conducted to determine the clinical results of a novel technique for temporary occlusion of the GDI tube with an iris retractor hook during phacoemulsification.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 15 patients (control group) who underwent phacoemulsification between January 2005 and December 2010 and 17 patients (treatment group) who underwent p
