UNLABELLED: A 60-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic on September 29, 1983 because of a five months history of personality change and progressive left sided motor weakness. Neurological examination on admission revealed left hemiparesis and papilledema. She was severely demented. Skull X-rays were normal. CT scan showed a large right parietoccipital mass which was markedly enhanced by contrast medium. Right internal carotid angiogram showed abnormal vascular shadow, early draining veins and tumor stain in parietoccipital region. Right external carotid angiogram showed that the tumor was

Gliosarcomas are rare tumours of the central nervous system, with a well-known capacity for metastasis. When they metastasise, the dissemination occurs more frequently via the haematogenous route to extraneural sites. Metastasis-spread through the cerebrospinal fluid is extremely rare. We present the case of a 58-year-old man who underwent a gross total resection of a lesion in the left temporal lobe. The histological findings revealed a gliosarcoma and the patient received radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. Seven months after surgery, while the patient remained neurologically intact, brai

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gliosarcomas are rare biphasic neoplasms of the central nervous system composed of a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) admixed with a sarcomatous component. There are conflicting reports regarding their clinical aggressiveness. Four hundred and twenty-two consecutive patients with GBM were treated at our hospital between 1980 and 1999, among them 12 gliosarcomas. The goal of this study was to examine clinical features, treatment, survival and patterns of failure of gliosarcoma patients and to compare them with the entire group of GBM patients. This comparison was refined by

A 69-year-old male presented with a week of worsening headache, mild dizziness and left side weakness, and the radiological work-up of his brain displayed an enhancing mass on the right frontal lobe. The tumor was totally resected. The patient was initially diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme. His neurologic symptoms recovered after surgery. He underwent adjuvant radiotherapy with concurrent temozolomide. Approximately 7 months after surgery, the patient complained of epigastric pains. Abdominal CT scan showed multiple hepatic metastasis and multiple lymphadenopathy. Chest CT and Torso posi

An 18-year-old woman with headaches and visual abnormalities was found upon biopsy to have an occipital gliosarcoma, which was treated with irradiation and chemotherapy for a year. Cells in the gliosarcoma tissue were positive for GFAP. At necropsy, only the sarcoma was evident at the site of original surgical removal. The sarcoma had spread widely along meningeal routes, causing the patient's death. The biologic behavior and histologic features of the sarcoma were clearly malignant. Cells cultured from the biopsy specimen maintained features in common with sarcoma.

We describe a rare case of a patient with left frontotemporal gliosarcoma, which metastasized through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to the leptomeninges and pachymeninges. Pathologically confirmed, magnetic resonance imaging-visible leptomeningeal spread of gliosarcoma via the CSF has not been previously reported.

Gliosarcoma is a rare subtype of glioblastoma, isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wildtype. This biphasic tumor has two components. The first one is glial and usually represented by glioblastoma. The second is a sarcomatous component usually represented by nonspecific spindle cell sarcoma. Rarely, different glial tumors could represent the non-sarcomatous component, including oligodendroglioma and ependymoma. There were only two reported cases in the literature with glioneuronal components (both were anaplastic ganglioglioma) as the non-sarcomatous component. This work reports a gliosarcoma in the

A peculiar subtype of glioblastoma multiforme is gliosarcoma. According to histological analysis, it possesses a biphasic shape that clearly distinguishes between glial and sarcomatous tissue. A gliosarcoma is often seen in the supratentorial region. Here, we describe a rare instance of giant left intraventricular gliosarcoma that manifested in a 1-year-old male. Advanced brain scan using magnetic resonance imaging identified a supratentorial tumor with radiological characteristics comparable to choroid plexus carcinoma. Histopathology determined that the tumor was a gliosarcoma. Despite its r

Gliosarcoma (GS) is a rare variant of glioblastoma (GBM) that usually affects middle-aged adults. The radiological characteristics of GS are similar to the radiological features observed in GBM. We present the case of a 74-year-old male patient who presented with neurological symptoms associated with a brain tumor. The patient had a medical history of prostate cancer, and MRI findings suggested the diagnosis of brain metastasis or GBM. However, postoperative histopathological examination of the tissue specimen confirmed a diagnosis of GS. GS can mimic several entities and should be included in

Gliosarcoma (GS) is a rare subtype of glioblastoma multiforme, characterized by a shorter clinical course and poorer prognosis compared to glioblastoma. Here, we report the case of a 50-year-old male patient who presented with episodic loss of consciousness and left-sided limb weakness for one month. MRI revealed a complex neoplastic lesion in the right fronto-parietal region. Postoperative pathology confirmed GS, and the patient underwent adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This case highlights the characteristic features of GS through a combination of imaging and pathological findings, p

Gliosarcoma is an unusual subtype of glioblastoma multiforme. Its characteristic features are biphasic configuration, constituting a definite, separate glial and sarcomatous differentiation, on histological evaluation. Herein, we present a rare case of Gliosarcoma that had presented only once in our center in last 13 years. A 60 years old, diabetic, hypertensive male patient came to e emergency department with disturbed level of consciousness and right sided hemiplegia which was progressive over four days. On examination he was, conscious, unoriented in time, person or place, his mouth deviate

OBJECTIVE: We describe a 29-year-old man with gliosarcoma in the lateral ventricle.
CASE: The patient presented with headache and impairment of consciousness. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging localized the tumor to the right lateral ventricle and showed heterogeneous enhancement with administration of contrast agents. The tumor was partially removed via a transcallosal approach. Histologic examination disclosed gliosarcoma arising by malignant transformation of an ependymoma. POST-OPERATIVE COURSE: The patient died of tumor progression 78 days after admission, despite intens

We report a case of gliosarcoma with numerous giant cells resembling ganglion cells and having clear nucleoli. A 75-year woman was admitted to our hospital suffering from progressive left hemiparesis and ambulatory disturbance of one week's duration. CT and MRI studies showed ring enhancement on a clear margin mass in the right parieto-occipital lobe. The mass was totally removed macroscopically. Her left hemiparesis had improved and self walk came to be possible. But the tumor was regrowthed during next two months and she died for three months and a week. The gross and microscopic appearances

Gliosarcoma is a rare variant of glioblastoma multiforme characterized by a biphasic pattern of glial and mesenchymal differentiation. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is routinely employed to diagnose a number of primary and secondary malignancies in a variety of clinical settings. Herein, we describe the cytomorphologic features of a gliosarcoma metastatic to an extracranial location accompanied by corresponding clinico-radiologic and histopathologic findings in a 51-year-old man with a posterior mediastinal mass. The cytologic smears displayed a pleomorphic tumor comprised of spindled and epith

A 68-year-old male was hospitalized because of headache, nausea, and disturbance of consciousness. Neurological examination on admission disclosed somnolence, disorientation, marked neck stiffness, papilledema, and quadriparesis. Computed tomography (CT) scanning demonstrated a round mass with marked contrast enhancement in the right sylvian fissure and small contrast-enhanced masses in the interpeduncular, quadrigeminal and ambient cisterns. CT also showed marked peritumoral edema, a midline shift, and hydrocephalus. The patient's consciousness level and respiration deteriorated 3 days after

Gliosarcomas are bimorphic intraaxial tumors. Involvement of the skull base is highly unexpected. The authors present the case of a temporal lobe gliosarcoma with significant infratemporal fossa extension. This 55-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of severe progressive headache. Neurological examination was unremarkable except for bilateral papilledema. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 6-cm right temporal mass with extension into the infratemporal fossa. The patient underwent a right frontotemporal craniotomy together with drilling of the sphenoid ridge and middle fossa floor.

Gliosarcoma represents an uncommon primary neoplasm of the central nervous system, distinguished by a biphasic histological architecture that combines glial and mesenchymal elements. In this report, we present three cases of intracranial tumors confirmed histopathologically as gliosarcoma, offering a comprehensive account of their clinical presentation, neuroimaging characteristics, and pathological features. The lesions involved different cerebral regions, specifically the frontal, temporal, and occipital lobes, and manifested with a heterogeneous range of symptoms, including headache, focal

Gliosarcoma is characterized by the presence of alternating lesions of glial and mesenchymal components. Although many mesenchymal components have been reported, there are few reports on glial components. We here report two cases of gliosarcoma. Case 1 was a 42-year-old woman with right hemiparesis and motor aphasia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) identified a tumor in the left frontal lobe. Pathological analysis of the tumor removal specimen revealed gliosarcoma, with a glial component resembling pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma. Postoperatively, radiotherapy and chemotherapy were conducted, a

The majority of glioblastomas develop rapidly with a short clinical history (primary glioblastoma IDH wild-type), whereas secondary glioblastomas progress from diffuse astrocytoma or anaplastic astrocytoma. IDH mutations are the genetic hallmark of secondary glioblastomas. Gliosarcomas and giant cell glioblastomas are rare histological glioblastoma variants, which usually develop rapidly. We determined the genetic patterns of 36 gliosarcomas and 19 giant cell glioblastomas. IDH1 and IDH2 mutations were absent in all 36 gliosarcomas and in 18 of 19 giant cell glioblastomas analyzed, indicating

The authors report a rare a case of gliosarcoma metastases in a 28-year-old male patient. The cauda equina roots were involved after brain tumor 16 months ago, which, on microscopic study, had a biphasic pattern and heterogeneous staining in the reaction with antibody to GFAP and vimentin; the tumor cells did not express EMA, EA, and desmin. Gliosarcoma was diagnosed, by taking into account morphological and immunohistochemical data. Tumor tissue of the cauda equine roots had the same immunophenotype as the brain tumor with a predominance of glial component, which permitted the source of metas
