[Epiretinal gliosis].

Epiretinal membranes represent avascular cellular proliferations on the retinal surface, preferentially in the area of the macula. Idiopathic, primary epiretinal membranes are a relatively common finding, especially in elderly people. Other secondary pathomechanisms include retinal tears, trauma, ophthalmic surgical procedures including retinal detachment surgery, laser coagulation and cryotherapy of the retina, or as a result of inflammatory diseases. Individual symptoms depend on the degree of cellular proliferation and associated tangential traction forces at the vitreoretinal interface res

[Progressive subcortical gliosis].

A case of autoptically verified progressive subcortical gliosis (PSG) is reported. The 79 year old woman developed subacutely a right sided hemisyndrome and a cerebellar syndrome. Generalized action myoclonus of the left leg evolved into left sided Epilepsia partialis continua and dementia appeared. After a 6 month course the patient died of aspiration pneumonia. There was no indication of alcoholism or HIV-dementia neither clinically nor at autopsy. Morphologically the brain showed a diffuse proliferation of astrocytes in the subcortical white matter, thalamus, basal ganglia, brain stem and c

Immature Teratoma With Metastatic Gliosis.

Immature teratomas are rare malignant tumors of the ovary. They are made of immature components of germ cell origin. The incidence of immature teratomas is highest in young adults aged 18 to 39. The prognosis heavily depends on the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system and is influenced by factors such as cell type, tumor grade, capsular rupture, and metastatic risk factors. Initial treatment is complete surgical resection. When indicated, platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy with bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) is the treatment of choice. Next-g

Late-onset sporadic progressive subcortical gliosis.

We report two sporadic cases of progressive subcortical gliosis (PSG) with onset after age 60. The presentation included slowly progressive dementia with memory loss, geographic disorientation, and personality change. Both were diagnosed clinically as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and both met NINCDS-ADRDA criteria for probable AD. Autopsy revealed generalized atrophy, predominantly involving the white matter of the frontal and temporal lobes. Microscopically, prominent fibrillary astrocytosis was present in the subcortical white matter and in the subpial and deep layers of the overlying cerebral c

Gliosis specimens contain clonal cytogenetic abnormalities.

The relevance of sex chromosome aneusomy and trisomy 7 in neoplastic brain tissue is controversial. For better understanding of the relative importance of these anomalies, we made a conventional cytogenetic study of cells from tissue obtained from patients who underwent partial cerebral resection for a seizure disorder. Each specimen exhibited "gliosis," but none contained histologically identifiable tumor cells. Sixty-six specimens were analyzed by routine cytogenetic methods. Nonclonal abnormalities were observed in 11.6% of the cells (86% of cases) analyzed. In 11 cases, however, simple clo

[Massive reactive gliosis of the retina].

BACKGROUND: Massive retinal gliosis is a rare, extreme form of a reactive glial cell proliferation and can cause difficulties in the differential diagnosis of intraocular tumors. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 33-year-old patient presented with a painful neovascular glaucoma and a solid intraocular mass. The left globe was subsequently enucleated. The fundus could not be visualized due to lens opacities and an incomplete occlusive membrane. The findings of the magnetic resonance imaging were compatible with an intraocular malignant choroidal melanoma. RESULTS: Histologically the intraocular tumor pr

Gonadal hormones and the control of reactive gliosis.

Astrocytes and microglia respond to central nervous system (CNS) injury with changes in morphology, proliferation, migration and expression of inflammatory regulators. This phenomenon is known as reactive gliosis. Activation of astrocytes and microglia after acute neural insults, such as stroke or traumatic CNS injury, is considered to be an adaptive response that contributes to minimize neuronal damage. However, reactive gliosis may amplify CNS damage under chronic neurodegenerative conditions. Progesterone, estradiol and testosterone have been shown to control reactive gliosis in different m

Absence of gliosis in the brains of epileptic fowl.

Chickens homozygous for the epi gene (epileptics) suffer from spontaneous seizures throughout their life, whereas heterozygous (carriers) are phenotypically normal. Seizures can also be evoked in epileptics by photic stimulation. In addition, epileptic chickens' brains are 25% heavier than those of carriers. We have investigated whether hyperplasia or hypertrophy of astrocytes or increased numbers of astrocytic processes are involved in the development of seizures and the megalencephaly in this model by quantitative comparison of sections immunocytochemically stained for glial fibrillary acidi

Reactive gliosis and neuroinflammation in rats with communicating hydrocephalus.

UNLABELLED: Reactive gliosis has been implicated in injury and recovery patterns associated with hydrocephalus. The roles that these mechanisms play in the pathophysiology of hydrocephalus are still not clear in terms of cytopathology and gene expression. In this paper, we investigated the relationship between reactive gliosis and neuroinflammation of hydrocephalic rats of different severity at both cellular and molecular levels. Therefore 35 adult SD (standard deviation) rats were randomly divided into the normal group (n=5), the sham operation group (n=5) and the model group (n=25). Hydrocep

Dementia of frontal type and dementias with subcortical gliosis.

The group of Frontotemporal dementias (FTD) is composed of non-Alzheimer forms of dementia characterized clinically by behavioural and personality change leading to apathy and mutism. The disorder is associated with a progressive atrophy of the frontal, anterior temporal and anterior parietal lobes of the brain with several types of underlying pathology. One type (frontal lobe degeneration) is characterized by a microvacuolar degeneration of the outer cortical laminae along with a mild and mainly subpial gliosis and a loss of nerve cells, mostly from layers II and III. Another type shows trans

Prominent EMA 'dots' in tumour-induced Bergmann gliosis.

AIMS: To describe an unusual pattern of epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) immunoreactivity in highly proliferative human Bergmann glia. METHODS AND RESULTS: An immunohistochemical study was performed of postmortem cerebellar tissue from 18 adult patients with cerebellar damage of various aetiologies and 15 biopsies of diverse adult and paediatric cerebellar tumours. We observed marked proliferation of Bergmann glia with unusual prominent dot-like cytoplasmic EMA immunoreactivity in a case with extensive leptomeningeal sarcomatosis. Similar staining was not observed in association with other t

Continuous electrocorticogram epileptiform discharges due to brain gliosis.

Cortical dysplasia is known to produce continuous epileptiform discharges (CEDs) on electrocorticogram (EcoG) and EEG recordings. The authors studied the incidence of CEDs on ECoGs and correlated this data with pathologic findings. Thirty ECoGs were reviewed that were performed on patients with parietal or occipital lobe epilepsy operated on since 1960. CED was classified as: (1) continuous or semicontinuous rhythmic spikes or sharp waves at frequencies ranging from 2 to 8 Hz, and (2) repetitive bursts of rhythmic polyspike activity lasting 2 to 10 s. All nontumoral pathologic specimens were r

Inflammation and gliosis in neurological diseases--clinical implications.

The inflammatory reaction accompany all acute processes in the central nervous system (CNS), (as stroke or traumatic brain injury) and chronic neurodegenerative processes (as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease), and through the stage of cleaning of damage tissue, contribute to recovery and regeneration and eventually to restoration of the function. However many studies showed that inflammation in the CNS may be harmful because of an excessive vulnerability of the nervous tissue or impaired regulation. Manipulation of the inflammation is now one of the approaches in the treatment of the various
