[Globus sensation : A clinical review].

Globus sensation is a medially felt lump in the throat. It can be associated with a number of different diseases, but this symptom may also occur monosymptomatically as a somatoform disorder or as a secondary somatoform illness behavior. Globus sensation may be persistent or intermittent. Diagnosis requires close interdisciplinary cooperation, since the globus may be a symptom of anxiety, depression or personality disorders. Firstly, patients should undergo a thorough otolaryngological examination (including careful medical history taking), possibly in cooperation with other medical specialist

Globus sensation after laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty.

PURPOSE: To determine the cause of globus sensation following laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty consecutive LAUP patients were questioned regarding globus sensation. Palate sensation on globus patients was mapped and compared with asymptomatic LAUP control patients. Symptomatic patients were tested again 2 months later. RESULTS: There was a 25% incidence of globus with 8% rated severe and 16% rated mild. The globus sensation corresponds to an insensate area of palate (P < .01). Resolution of the symptoms coincides with reemergence of sensation on the palat

Globus sensation: findings on videofluoroscopic examinations.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the findings on videofluoroscopy of the pharynx and esophagus in patients with a globus sensation and compare them with a similar group of patients with dysphagia. METHODS: A computerized search of radiology files revealed 83 patients with a globus sensation who had videofluoroscopic examinations of the pharynx and esophagus during a 10-year period from 1989-1999. A computerized search was also performed to generate an age- and sex-matched group of 83 patients with dysphagia who also had videofluoroscopic examinations during this period. Original radiologic reports wer

Globus sensation caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to examine whether or not gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is implicated in globus sensation. METHODS: The subjects were 25 patients (16 men/9 women; mean age: 51, range 25-69 years) complaining of globus sensation with one or more of four laryngeal findings suspected of having GERD, such as pooling of saliva, erythema of posterior one-third of larynx, inter-arytenoids edema, and granuloma. All 25 patients were administrated a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for a period of 8 weeks. All were given esophageal endoscopies, laryngoscopes, and questionnaire

Epiglottic cyst as an etiological factor of globus sensation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Globus is a subjective complaint that describes a sensation of a lump or a foreign body in the throat. Despite being a well-known and common clinical condition, the etiological factors have not been definitely elucidated yet. The study was set up to ascertain the relationship between epiglottic cysts and globus sensation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing investigation and treatments for globus sensation were included in the study. Patients with epiglottic cysts but no other possible causes of globus sensation were constituted the series of patients. Patients wer

An Approach to Globus Sensation: Clinical Pearls for Clinicians.

Globus sensation is a common presenting symptom encountered by primary care physicians, otolaryngologists, and gastroenterologists. Although common, it can have a significant impact on quality of life and is often difficult to treat, given lack of a standardized approach to diagnosis and management. In this concise review, we outline the various causes that may contribute to globus sensation, encompassing sinonasal processes such as post-nasal drip, esophageal conditions including laryngopharyngeal and gastroesophageal reflux, and psychological factors as well as structural abnormalities, amon

Globus sensation is not due to gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Oesophageal manometry and prolonged ambulatory pH monitoring were performed in 47 patients with the globus sensation, 48 control subjects and 28 patients with documented oesophagitis. Globus patients also underwent video-recorded barium examination and rigid endoscopy. Manometry was normal in 38 of the globus group (94%). The mean percentage time below pH 4 was 4.16 in controls, 5.11 in globus patients (NS) and 18.54 in oesophagitis patients (P less than 0.0005). Oesophageal acid exposure did not correlate with sex, smoking or heartburn and correlated with age only in oesophagitis patients (P

Globus sensation and psychopathology in men: the Vietnam experience study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether globus is associated with psychopathology in men. Globus-a persistent sensation of having a lump in the throat with no detectable physical cause-has long been thought a predominantly female disorder. Several small studies, based wholly or largely on women, suggested that globus is associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, and somatic concern. METHODS: Participants were 4240 male U.S. veterans who underwent detailed medical and psychological examinations in middle age. Psychological health was assessed by structured diagnostic interview and the clinical

[Osteochondrosis of the cervical spine as a cause of globus sensation and dysphagia].

Dysphagia and globus hystericus can be caused by disorders of the cervical spine. Functional disorders of the upper cervical spine are the most common cause of dysphagia and globus hystericus due to vertebral disease. Prominent osteophytes of the ventral spine occasionally cause these complaints. In these cases the operative ablation of the osteophytes is effective. This is demonstrated in the following report, and the indication for operation is discussed.

[Use of flexible transnasal esophagogastroscopy in patients with unclear globus sensation].

BACKGROUND: Globus pharyngeus is a common symptom with considerable suffering. Globus sensation can be caused by reflux. In many places, endoscopy of the esophagus is recommended for clarification, especially when there is a question about the presence of a hiatal hernia as the cause of reflux. Transnasal esophagogastroscopy (TNE) represents an alternative to conventional gastroesophagoscopy. It enables a quick low-complication examination of the upper aerodigestive tract in the sitting, non-sedated patient. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to assess the feasibility of outpatient TNE in pa

An unusual cause for globus sensation: infected tracheal diverticulum with abscess formation.

CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old woman presented with a 3-week history of globus sensation and malaise. A computed tomography scan of her neck showed a large right paratracheal abscess secondary to an infected tracheal diverticulum. The patient was admitted under the ENT surgical team, and underwent incision and drainage of the abscess. There were no post-operative complications and she was discharged home after 2 days, on oral antibiotics. CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates that a tracheal diverticulum may become infected and present as a cervical abscess. To our knowledge, this is the fourth repo

ESNM/ANMS Review. Diagnosis and management of globus sensation: A clinical challenge.

Globus is a non-painful sensation of a tightness or a lump/foreign body in the throat that is not associated with dysphagia and may actually improve during meals. While several otorhinolaryngologic, thyroid, and esophageal disorders have been linked to globus, cause-and-effect relationships are difficult to establish. Consequently, though part of the evaluation, objective otorhinolaryngologic and esophageal testing is often negative. The presence of alarm symptoms, particularly pain, weight loss, dysphagia, or odynophagia is indications for objective testing. A diagnosis of idiopathic globus r

Use of Cervical Ultrasonography in Globus Sensation Investigation: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: A globus sensation is one of the most common complaints in otolaryngological practice. Patients with no associated abnormalities detected during the usual examinations performed in ENT clinics, are being diagnosed with globus sensation. Cervical ultrasonography is usually not performed in ENT clinics; however, it is useful in screening diseases of the subcutaneous tissue/organs, whose detection is not possible with the routine ENT examinations. The purpose of our study was to elucidate whether cervical ultrasound examination identifies abnormalities in patients with globus sensatio

Esophageal Manometry, pH Testing, Endoscopy, and Videofluoroscopy in Patients With Globus Sensation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Combine techniques commonly employed in the clinical workup of patients with isolated globus sensation to identify the most common pharyngoesophageal abnormality. The primary aim was to retrospectively review high-resolution manometry, pH probe testing, contrast videofluoroscopy, and endoscopy studies in patients with a primary complaint of globus sensation. The specific hypothesis was esophageal high-resolution manometry identifies the most significant proportion of abnormalities compared to all other modalities.
