Damaged Dickinsonia specimens provide clues to Ediacaran vendobiont biology.

Recently reported specimens of the enigmatic Ediacaran fossil Dickinsonia from Russia show damage and repair that provides evidence of how they grew, and of their biological affinities. Marginal and terminal areas of wilting deformation are necrotic zones separating regenerated growth, sometimes on two divergent axes, rather than a single axis. Necrotic zones of damage to Dickinsonia are not a thick scar or callus, like a wound or amputation. Nor are they smooth transitions to a regenerated tail or arm. The wilted necrotic zone is most like damage by freezing, salt, or sunburn of leaves and li

Rapidly progressing necrotic hand ulcer in a patient with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota, subphylum Mucormycotina. In developed countries, it affects patients with haematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy and those who have received allogenic stem cell transplants, while in developing countries it is seen in those with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a 67yo Chinese gentleman with background of angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) on chemotherapy. We also share the clinicopathological findings of this and correlate these

Cutaneous mucormycosis.

Cutaneous mucormycosis is an emerging fungal infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota. It is frequent in poorly controlled diabetic patients and individuals with immunosuppression. It is usually acquired by direct inoculation through trauma. The clinical presentation is nonspecific, but an indurated plaque that rapidly evolves to necrosis is a common finding. Diagnosis should be confirmed by demonstration of the etiological agent and new molecular diagnostic tools have recently been described. It is an invasive life-threatening disease and in order to improve surviva

Mycorrhizal inoculation as an alternative for the sustainable production of Mimosa tenuiflora seedlings with improved growth and secondary compounds content.

In this study, we report the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and increasing doses of phosphorus (P) on the growth and production of secondary metabolites in Mimosa tenuiflora, a medicinal species native to Brazil. We used a completely randomized design with four inoculation treatments: Control not inoculated (1); Claroideoglomus etunicatum (2); Gigaspora albida (3); and C. etunicatum + G. albida (4) and four doses of P; P0 - baseline dose, P8, P16 and P32. After 70 d in a greenhouse, growth, mycorrhizal variables, biochemical and phytochemical parameters were evaluated. Compared

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi alleviate manganese toxicity in trifoliate orange through dual mechanisms of external barrier and internal detoxification.

Manganese (Mn) toxicity, exacerbated by soil acidification and anthropogenic pollution, poses a significant threat to plant growth and ecosystem health, particularly in economically important citrus plants. This study tried to uncover the mechanisms by which the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis mosseae (T.H. Nicolson & Gerd.) C. Walker & A. Schüßler enhances Mn tolerance in trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) seedlings under excess Mn stress (20 mmol L-1 MnSO4). Although Mn stress inhibited root colonization by F. mosseae, inoculation with F. mosseae significantly alleviated the

An interpretable soil-pH suitability index for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal genera.

Soil pH is among the most consistent abiotic axes structuring arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities, yet the pH dependence of individual taxa has not been turned into an interpretable instrument that resolves preference at the genus level and maps globally. HESI (Hydrogenic Edaphic Suitability Index) is a fuzzy-set trapezoidal pH-membership function for twelve Glomeromycotina genera whose four parameters are read from binned presence-rate profiles in GlobalFungi by an explicit rule rather than fitted, then scored on an independent SoilGrids pH surface. Under spatial block cross-valida

Initial microbial status modulates mycorrhizal inoculation effect on rhizosphere microbial communities.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a central role in rhizosphere functioning as they interact with both plants and soil microbial communities. The conditions in which AMF modify plant physiology and microbial communities in the rhizosphere are still poorly understood. In the present study, four different plant species, (clover, alfalfa, ryegrass, tall fescue) were cultivated in either sterilized (γ ray) or non-sterilized soil and either inoculated with a commercial AMF (Glomus LPA Val 1.) or not. After 20 weeks of cultivation, the mycorrhizal rate and shoot and root biomasses were measure

Trading on the arbuscular mycorrhiza market: from arbuscules to common mycorrhizal networks.

Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) symbiosis occurs between obligate biotrophic fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota and most land plants. The exchange of nutrients between host plants and AM fungi (AMF) is presumed to be the main benefit for the two symbiotic partners. In this review article, we outline the current concepts of nutrient exchanges within this symbiosis (mechanisms and regulation). First, we focus on phosphorus and nitrogen transfer from the fungal partner to the host plant, and on the reciprocal transfer of carbon compounds, with a highlight on a possible interplay between nitrogen and ph

Taxonomy of fungi causing mucormycosis and entomophthoramycosis (zygomycosis) and nomenclature of the disease: molecular mycologic perspectives.

Molecular phylogenetic analysis confirmed the phylum Zygomycota to be polyphyletic, and the taxa conventionally classified in Zygomycota are now distributed among the new phylum Glomeromycota and 4 subphyla incertae sedis (uncertain placement). Because the nomenclature of the disease zygomycosis was based on the phylum Zygomycota (Zygomycetes) in which the etiologic agents had been classified, the new classification profoundly affects the name of the disease. Zygomycosis was originally described as a convenient and inclusive name for 2 clinicopathologically different diseases, mucormycosis cau

AMF genotype and host identity determine AMF inoculant performance.

The use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as biofertilizers is limited by variable outcomes. Although differential outcomes among AMF and hosts are well documented, the relative importance of fungal identity, host identity, and soil nutrient availability in determining symbiotic outcomes remains unclear, particularly in soils containing resident AMF communities. We crossed five AMF isolates spanning a gradient of phylogenetic relatedness and ecological strategies with four host plant species under two soil nutrient levels in a greenhouse experiment. We quantified inoculant establishment an

Low soil phosphorus conditioning enhances mutualism in Rhizophagus irregularis regardless of nuclear organization, even when phosphorus conditions shift.

Strains of the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Rhizophagus irregularis belong to one of two nuclear organizations: homokaryons, which carry genetically similar nuclei, and dikaryons, which harbour two genetically distinct nuclear populations. Although traits tend to be conserved within each group, it is unclear whether their capacity to adapt or exhibit phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental change differs. Here, we tested whether dikaryotic strains have greater potential than homokaryotic strains for rapid adaptation or plasticity in response to shifts in soil phosphorus (P) av

Divergent Evolution of Early Terrestrial Fungi Reveals the Evolution of Mucormycosis Pathogenicity Factors.

Fungi have evolved over millions of years and their species diversity is predicted to be the second largest on the earth. Fungi have cross-kingdom interactions with many organisms that have mutually shaped their evolutionary trajectories. Zygomycete fungi hold a pivotal position in the fungal tree of life and provide important perspectives on the early evolution of fungi from aquatic to terrestrial environments. Phylogenomic analyses have found that zygomycete fungi diversified into two separate clades, the Mucoromycota which are frequently associated with plants and Zoopagomycota that are com

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi influence the speciation and subcellular abundance of uranium in plant roots.

Uranium (U) is a natural radioactive metal and a persistent environmental pollutant. Characterising the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on U bioaccumulation and partitioning in plants is crucial to understand U soil-to-plant transfer mechanisms. High resolution elemental mapping, spectroscopy and microscopy techniques were conducted on uranyl nitrate dosed Plantago lanceolata roots colonised with Rhizophagus irregularis. U-rich particles accumulated within the root cells, with higher abundance in epidermal and outer cortex cells of mycorrhizal root samples than in non-mycorrhiz

How can long-term cold storage affect the content of glomalin-related soil proteins from an arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum?

It has been shown that cold long-term storage of Entrophospora etunicata inoculum may decrease the concentration of spore proteins. However, no studies have been carried out to understand how long-term storage under cold conditions may interfere with glomalin-related soil proteins (GRSP) concentration, thermostable glycoproteins released by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). To elucidate how this shelf-life factor may modulate GRSP concentration, the same isolate of E. etunicata was cultivated in 2000 (Ee2000) and 2023 (Ee2023) and stored since then under cold conditions (4-6ºC). Elevated CO2 and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi enhanced black locust seedling defense under cadmium exposure by 13C isotopic tracer.

Elevated CO2 (eCO2) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) positively influence plant defense under heavy metal exposure individually, however, the combination of them and the contribution of eCO2 were still unclear. The pot experiment was employed to explore the combined effect of eCO2 (700 ppm) and Funneliformis mosseae on the defense of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) grown in cadmium (Cd)-polluted soils by 13C isotope tracer. Elevated CO2 significantly caused an increase in Cd content, decreases in contents of malonaldehyde, carotenoids, soluble sugars and proteins, metallothioneins

Morpho-physiological traits of soybean plants in symbiosis with Gigaspora sp. and submitted to water restriction.

In agricultural production, periods in which there is a lack of water can affect the productivity of soybean crops. One alternative is the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which maximize water absorption, biochemical regulation, leaf elasticity and transpiration, and water use regulation. The present study aimed to analyze the morphological and physiological traits of soybean plants associated with Gigaspora margarita and Gigaspora gigantea submitted to water restriction in nonsterilized soil. The soybean plants received 31 g of the AMF Gigaspora margarita or 46 g of Gigaspora gigant

Spore-based arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community in an olive cultivation area in southern Brazil.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota, establish symbiotic associations with approximately 90% of terrestrial plant species and play a key role in nutrient acquisition, tolerance to abiotic stresses, and agroecosystem functioning. Although olive cultivation has expanded in southern Brazil, information on native AMF communities associated with this crop remains scarce. This study characterized the AMF community associated with the rhizosphere of the olive cultivars Arbequina, Coratina, and Picual cultivated in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Soil sampling was cond

Pyraclostrobin impairs metabolic activity and phosphorus uptake of the extraradical mycelium of Rhizophagus intraradices more severely than iprodione.

Pesticide residues are widespread in agricultural soils and may adversely affect arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, key symbionts involved in plant phosphorus (P) acquisition. Most studies to date have focused on pesticide effects either on spores (asymbiotic phase) or on the mycorrhizal plant as a whole. Here, we investigated the effects of two fungicides with contrasting modes of action-pyraclostrobin (quinone-outside inhibitor) and iprodione (dicarboximide)-applied specifically to the extraradical mycelium (ERM) of Rhizophagus intraradices MUCL 49410 associated with Medicago truncatula. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus and Pseudomonas bacteria affect tomato response to Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) herbivory.

Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most significant invasive and destructive pests worldwide, causing serious economic losses to the tomato industry. Rhizosphere microorganism, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Pseudomonas bacteria, can interact with plants individually or collectively to improve plant growth and resistance to pests and disease. However, the effects of AMF, Pseudomonas, and their interactions on plant responses to insect herbivores remain unclear.
