The tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) story: implications for mosquitoes.

In Zimbabwe, tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) are controlled using insecticide-impregnated baits. About 60,000 targets, baited with a blend of acetone, 1-octen-3-ol, 4-methylphenol, and 3-n-propylphenol, are deployed in tsetse-infested areas. The development of this control technology has been based on an understanding of the responses of tsetse to their hosts, using research tools that quantify single specific responses. this understanding required the development of new research tools, such as electrocuting devices and video techniques to analyze behavioral responses and gas chromatography linke

Salivary secretion in three species of tsetse flies (Glossinidae).

The study of the mechanism and process of salivation in tsetse flies is of paramount importance towards a fuller understanding of the transmission of trypanosomiasis and nagana diseases. Gordon, Crewe and Willett (1956) made direct observations, through a microscope, of the haustellum of G. morsitans as it penetrated into the ear of an anesthetised mouse and found that probing was accompanied by a copious but intermittent ejection of saliva from the hypopharynx. The outpouring of the saliva commenced during penetration of the stratum corneum and was maintained throughout probing of the tissues

Diversity of Glossinidae (Diptera) species in The Gambia in relation to vegetation.

Glossina species are known to transmit African Trypanosomiasis, one of the most important infectious diseases for both livestock and humans in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize trapped Glossina spp. from The Gambia using morphological and molecular techniques in relation to the vegetation cover types. A line transect survey was carried out in all the administrative regions of The Gambia. Tsetse fly trapping was carried out for 14 days during each season using line transect. A total of 220 Glossina spp. specimens (117 F and 103 M) were captured, and DNA wa

Evolution and Structural Analyses of Glossina morsitans (Diptera; Glossinidae) Tetraspanins.

Tetraspanins are important conserved integral membrane proteins expressed in many organisms. Although there is limited knowledge about the full repertoire, evolution and structural characteristics of individual members in various organisms, data obtained so far show that tetraspanins play major roles in membrane biology, visual processing, memory, olfactory signal processing, and mechanosensory antennal inputs. Thus, these proteins are potential targets for control of insect pests. Here, we report that the genome of the tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae) encodes at least sev

Refractoriness in tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) may be a matter of timing.

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae: Glossina spp.) are vectors for African trypanosomiasis, a devastating disease that kills both people and animals in sub-Saharan Africa. Trypanosomes ingested with an infected bloodmeal reside within the gut of tsetse and eventually move to the salivary glands where they become transmissible during blood feeding. Although tsetses are efficient vectors for disease transmission, infection prevalence in the field is surprisingly low, a trait referred to as refractoriness. Refractoriness is relatively more pronounced in palpalis subgroup flies, although certain s

Morphometric diagnosis of Glossina palpalis (Diptera: Glossinidae) population structure in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify isolated population(s) of Glossina palpalis in Ghana using geometric morphometrics to evaluate variations in wing-shape and size between populations of the fly from three regions. RESULTS: Wing shape of G. palpalis tsetse flies from the Northern, Western and Eastern Regions varied significantly between each other. Populations from the Northern and Western Regions varied the most (Mahalanobis Distance = 54.20). The least variation was noticed between populations from the Western and Eastern Regions (MD = 1.99). On morphospace, the Northern population cle

Characterization of microsatellite markers in the tsetse fly, Glossina pallidipes (Diptera: Glossinidae).

Glossina pallidipes is a vector of African trypanosomiasis. Here we characterize eight new polymorphic microsatellite loci in 288 G. pallidipes sampled from 12 Kenya populations. The number of alleles per locus ranged from four to 36 with a mean of 20.5 +/- 10.1. Expected single locus heterozygosities varied from 0.044 to 0.829. Heterozygosity averaged 0.616 +/- 0.246. No linkage disequilibrium was found. We also report results in eight other tsetse species estimated by using the primers developed in G. pallidipes. The primers worked best in G. swynnertoni and G. austeni and worst in G. m. mor

Ecological zonation and phylogeographic structure of Glossina pallidipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) in eastern and southern Africa.

Glossina pallidipes, a major vector of African trypanosomiasis, plays a notable role in disease transmission across eastern and southern Africa due to its broad host range, ecological adaptability, and vectorial capacity. This study combined machine learning using 69 environmental, climatic, edaphic, and developmental variables and genetic analysis to delineate the environmental and phylogenetic structuring of G. pallidipes populations. Kernel density estimation revealed three primary hotspots in the Ethiopian and East African Highlands and the Northern Zimbabwe Lowveld, with a secondary focus

Evaluation of the relative roles of the Tabanidae and Glossinidae in the transmission of trypanosomosis in drug resistance hotspots in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) and tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae) are haematophagous insects of medical and veterinary importance due to their respective role in the biological and mechanical transmission of trypanosomes. Few studies on the distribution and relative abundance of both families have been conducted in Mozambique since the country's independence. Despite Nicoadala, Mozambique, being a multiple trypanocidal drug resistance hotspot no information regarding the distribution, seasonality or infection rates of fly-vectors are available. This is, however, crucial to unde

Distribution and abundance of hematophagous flies (Glossinidae, Stomoxys, and Tabanidae) in two national parks of Gabon.

In order to minimize risks of pathogen transmission with the development of ecotourism in Gabon, a seasonal inventory has been performed in five contrasted biotopes in Ivindo (INP) and Moukalaba-Doudou (MDNP) National Parks. A total of 10,033 hematophagous flies were captured. The Glossinidae, with six different species identified, was the most abundant group and constitutes about 60% of the captured flies compared to the Stomoxys (6 species also identified) and Tabanidae with 28% and 12%, respectively. The Glossinidae showed a higher rate of capture in primary forest and in research camps. In

Dynamics of the salivary gland hypertrophy virus in laboratory colonies of Glossina pallidipes (Diptera: Glossinidae).

Many species of tsetse flies are infected by a virus that causes salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) and the virus isolated from Glossina pallidipes (GpSGHV) has recently been sequenced. Flies with SGH have a reduced fecundity and fertility. To better understand the impact of this virus in a laboratory colony of G. pallidipes, where the majority of flies are infected but asymptomatic, and to follow the development of SGH in the offspring of symptomatic infected flies, we examined the progeny of tsetse flies reared under different conditions. The results show that the progeny of asymptomatic paren

The distribution of tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) and bovine trypanosomosis in the Matutuine District, Maputo Province, Mozambique.

A tsetse and bovine trypanosomosis survey was conducted during 1998 and 1999 in the Matutuine District of Maputo Province (Mozambique). A total of 59 Glossina brevipalpis and 17 Glossina austeni were captured throughout the district. Survey results suggest that Glossina brevipalpis is mainly concentrated in dense vegetation along the Maputo River and in the wetlands east of the river. G. austeni, on the other hand, was captured mainly in dense thickets in drier areas. Both tsetse species are suspected to be vectors of bovine trypanosomosis. Bovine trypanosomosis (75,5% Trypanosoma congolense)

Projecting the Potential Distribution of Glossinamorsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae) under Climate Change Using the MaxEnt Model.

Glossina morsitans is a vector for Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), which is mainly distributed in sub-Saharan Africa at present. Our objective was to project the historical and future potentially suitable areas globally and explore the influence of climatic factors. The maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) was utilized to evaluate the contribution rates of bio-climatic factors and to project suitable habitats for G. morsitans. We found that Isothermality and Precipitation of Wettest Quarter contributed most to the distribution of G. morsitans. The predicted potentially suitable areas for G. mor

How plastic are upper thermal limits? A comparative study in tsetse (family: Glossinidae) and wider Diptera.

Critical thermal maximum (CTmax) describes the upper thermal tolerance of an animal where biological functions start to fail. A period of acclimation can enhance CTmax through plasticity, potentially buffering animals from extreme temperatures caused by climate change. Basal and acclimated CTmax vary within and between species and may be explained by traits related to thermal physiology, such as body size and sex. Differences in CTmax have not been established among species of tsetse fly (Glossina spp.), vectors of animal and human African trypanosomiasis. Here, we investigated basal CTmax and

Ability of trypanosome-infected tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) to acquire an infection with a second trypanosome species.

The epidemiology of human and animal trypanosomiasis is determined to a large extent by the number of infected tsetse flies in a specific area. In the field, a substantial proportion of infected flies carry mixed trypanosome infections. The way in which these tsetse flies acquire a mixed infection is not fully understood. In particular, the susceptibility of tsetse flies to sequential infection with trypanosomes is not well understood. Accordingly, laboratory studies were made of the effects of age and prior infection on the probability of Glossina morsitans morsitans (Westwood) developing an
