Injury can occur to several of the cranial nerves during carotid endarterectomy. Among these, glossopharyngeal nerve injury is an uncommon complication because it is remote from the field of dissection in most carotid procedures. From more than 2000 carotid operations four cases of symptomatic ninth cranial nerve injury were identified. Analysis revealed that dissection cephalad to the level of the hypoglossal nerve was a common feature of each and severe functional disability can result from glossopharyngeal nerve paresis. When mobilization of this nerve and division of the posterior belly of

The glossopharyngeal nerve lies in close proximity to the tonsillar fossa making it susceptible to injury during tonsillectomy, though it is uncommonly injured in practice. We present a case of severe dysphagia due to glossopharyngeal nerve injury following tonsillectomy and demonstrate the efficacy of the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP), a novel stepwise exercise-based rehabilitation program, in improving clinical outcomes. In patients with persistent, severe dysphagia following tonsillectomy, glossopharyngeal nerve injury should be on the differential diagnosis. The MDTP is one meth

Iatrogenic injuries of the nervus glossopharyngeus are usually seen during procedures such as tonsillectomy, adenectomy, carotid endarterectomy, and endotracheal intubation due to its close anatomical neighborhood. Damage to the nervus glossopharyngeus is characterized by specific and nonspecific symptoms such as sensory deficits, especially in the posterior 1/3 of the tongue and soft palate, sore throat, swallowing disorder, and decreased parotid gland secretion. The glossopharyngeal nerve has a close anatomical relationship with the palatine tonsil and is at risk during tonsillectomy. Thus,

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) can invade the brainstem or brain via the glossopharyngeal, vagus , or facial nerve, resulting in brainstem inflammation or encephalitis. We report the case of a 66-year-old male patient with a primary manifestation of medulla injury of the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves, combined with a medulla lesion, who was misdiagnosed with lateral medullary syndrome. Facial nerve injury and earache subsequently occurred and human herpes virus 3 (VZV) was detected by second-generation sequencing of the cerebrospinal fluid. The final diagnosis was varicella zoster encephalit

Iatrogenic glossopharyngeal nerve injuries are commonly associated with procedures such as a tonsillectomy, carotid endarterectomy, and endotracheal intubation. We present a previously unreported complication of a thread lift procedure in the jowl region, causing damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve through compression. The glossopharyngeal nerve belongs to the bulbar group of the cranial nerves. It is connected with the vagus and, therefore, is closely associated with the latter functionally and anatomically. Damage to the former may present with cardiovascular complications associated with t

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The incidence of cranial and/or cervical nerve injuries after primary carotid endarterectomy (CEA) ranges from 3% to 48%; however, the clinical outcome of these injuries after repeat CEA has not been thoroughly analyzed in the English-language medical literature. This prospective study analyzes the incidence and outcome of cranial nerve injuries after repeat CEA.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study includes 89 consecutive patients who had repeat CEAs. Preoperative and postoperative cranial nerve evaluations were performed, including clinical examinations (neurologic) and

Cranial nerve injuries are unusual complications of supraglottic airway use. Branches of the trigeminal, glossopharyngeal, vagus and the hypoglossal nerve may all be injured. We performed a systematic review of published case reports and case series of cranial nerve injury from the use of supraglottic airway devices. Lingual nerve injury was the most commonly reported (22 patients), followed by recurrent laryngeal (17 patients), hypoglossal (11 patients), glossopharyngeal (three patients), inferior alveolar (two patients) and infra-orbital (one patient). Injury is generally thought to result f

In our case, we report a previously unreported complication of a thread lift procedure in the jowl region. This complication was caused by damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve through compression. The case also illustrates the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of iatrogenic injury to the glossopharyngeal nerve. The widespread use of thread lift in aesthetic medicine has increased the variety and frequency of complications. The thread lift procedure is an blind intervention in which critical anatomical structures are not directly visualised. Therefore, the risk of damage to various structures

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory arrest following brainstem herniation has been attributed to injuries resulting from compression of the respiratory centers. While it is widely perceived that the chemoreceptor network, consisting of the glossopharyngeal nerve and carotid body (GPN-CB), is essential for the modulation of respiration, its contribution to the development of respiratory arrest has not been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether injury to the GPN-CB occurs in animals with respiratory arrest caused by experimentally-induced subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Acoustic neuroma resection is an example of a neurosurgical procedure where the brainstem and multiple cranial nerves are at risk for injury. Electrode placement for monitoring of the glossopharyngeal and hypoglossal nerves during acoustic neuroma resection can be challenging. The purpose of this report is to illustrate the use of a device for intra-oral electrode placement for intraoperative monitoring of the glossopharyngeal and hypoglossal nerves. A 60-year-old male presented for acoustic neuroma resection. Under general anesthesia, a Crowe-Davis retractor was used to open the mouth, provid

The glossopharyngeal nerve block is an interventional technique utilized for head and neck pain management in the setting of glossopharyngeal neuralgia, dental procedures, awake endotracheal intubations, and post-pharyngeal surgery. This procedure is traditionally performed with landmark technique or ultrasound-guided techniques, all of which are associated with potential risks and complications for the patient. We report the novel technique of a CT-guided paramaxillary approach glossopharyngeal nerve block, which has not been previously reported, eliminates the trans-parotid trajectory, and r

Baroreflex failure after chemodectoma resection We present a case of baroreflex failure secondary to a unilateral injury of the glossopharyngeal nerve. The patient was operated for a left-sided chemodectoma in the carotid body. Some months after surgery she started to report presyncopal episodes exacerbated by mental stress and when standing up. During these episodes, the patient presented hypertensive crises and tachycardia. However, blood pressure was below normal ranges at rest. The diagnosis was baroreflex failure secondary to unilateral injury of the glossopharyngeal nerve. The case repor

INTRODUCTION: En bloc subtotal temporal bone resection (STBR) is challenging. En bloc resection aiming for negative margins is considered the most reliable treatment strategy for advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal. However, the literature indicates that STBR carries a high perioperative risk. This report retrospectively examines 5 cases of en bloc STBR, considering the manipulating of the lower cranial nerves and the superior jugular bulb (SJB) from a microsurgical anatomical perspective.
METHODS: Retrospective observational study. This study includes 5 cases of S

Peripheral nerve injuries may complicate extracranial vascular surgery. Pareses of the recurrent and hypoglossal nerves are clinically important. The nervus laryngeus superior, the ramus marginalis mandibulae of the facial nerve and the brachial plexus may be involved. Horner's syndrom indicating damage of sympathetic fibers may also appear. Lesions of the glossopharyngeal, vagus and phrenic nerves are rather seldom.
