Surgeons and obstetricians, over the centuries, were only too aware that accidental open injuries during their work, especially in a septic case, could lead to an infected wound, a fulminating illness and often death. Even before the bacterial nature of infection had been established in the mid 19th century, it was still obvious that this dangerous and often fatal condition was caused by the transfer of some poisonous material or 'miasma' from the patient to his surgeon. As long ago as 1758, an obstetrician named Walbaum protected his hands by covering them with sheep's caecum. Others used glo

Occupational dermatitis to personal protective equipment (PPE), particularly to gloves, mainly occurs in healthcare workers. They are all irritant and/or allergic contact dermatitis (eczema and contact urticaria). Prolonged glove wearing by healthcare workers favours skin irritation of the hands and wrists. It is very important to consider characteristics and materials of gloves used in the medical field. Rubber additives are the main allergens in gloves. Latex or natural rubber remains by far the most frequent cause for occupational contact urticaria from gloves. The problem of prevention of

A 17-year-old male encountered anaphylaxis caused by latex surgical gloves during emergency surgery under general anesthesia. He had undergone multiple surgical procedures, bladder catheterization and was suffering from atopic dermatitis. The patient developed bronchospasm and circulatory collapse 20 minutes after the start of surgery. Administration of dopamine, aminophylline and methylprednisolone helped to normalize airway pressure and blood pressure. Latex allergy occurs in persons considered at high risk including patient with spina bifida, urogenital abnormalities, atopic dermatitis, hea

Since 1979 several reports of contact urticaria due to natural latex have been well documented. Recent case reports suggest that rhinitis and asthma may also be due to rubber exposure. We describe an operating room nurse who was exposed at work to natural rubber (latex) due to the use of latex surgical gloves. After 25 years, she developed contact urticaria, rhinoconjunctivitis and acute asthma following the handling of rubber gloves for surgical purposes. She was symptom-free when on vacation. Skin prick testing demonstrated an immediate skin reaction to latex. Rub testing with surgical glove

Intraperitoneal adhesion formation is a major cause of infertility and/or intestinal obstruction. Among the many well-known aetiological factors responsible for peritoneal inflammatory reaction is surgical glove powder; for example, cornstarch powder. A study was undertaken on 30 rats to determine whether cornstarch powder caused intraperitoneal adhesions. The rats were randomised into two groups under laboratory conditions. Laparotomies were performed on all the rats and trauma inflicted to the right uterine horn. The study group received cornstarch powder suspended in normal physiological sa

BACKGROUND: Rubber accelerators play a significant role in glove-related occupational contact dermatitis, especially among health care workers. Currently, there is limited information readily available outlining the accelerators used in specific medical examination and surgical gloves.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to ascertain the accelerators used in medical examination and surgical gloves for major glove manufacturers within the United States.
METHODS: An initial Internet-based search was performed to establish relevant manufacturers and product lines, with subsequent inquiry with

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a well-recognized immune-mediated disease often associated with the use of vulcanization accelerator-containing latex and nitrile gloves. Potential contact allergens in neoprene (polychloroisoprene, polychloroprene) gloves have not been reported.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to analyze extracts of neoprene surgical and examination gloves for potential contact allergens.
METHODS: Four different brands of neoprene-type gloves were purchased, and dichloromethane extracts were derivatized and assayed by gas chromatographic mass spectrometry. A lat

Latex used in the manufacture of surgical gloves should be included in a list of allergens. It is found in the tree Hevea braziliensis. For approximately the last year, minutes after using surgical gloves, a female doctor had severe pruritus followed by a rash and angio-oedema of the contact areas. During the last 4 months, on opening the glove-bag, she experienced severe rhinitis and respiratory distress. The symptoms ceased in 1 h. Standard patch tests and with substances used in the manufacture of rubber were negative. Prick tests with glove and natural latex were strongly positive. The pre

Contact dermatitis caused by surgical gloves is well known. Contact urticaria and anaphylactoid reactions among hospital personnel and patients following contact with latex gloves and glove dusting powder have previously been reported. A suspected increased frequency of hand eczema among personnel using detergents and surgical gloves in operating units initiated the present study. A questionnaire survey was performed in order to examine the frequency and degree of hand eczema among 332 surgeons and nurses working at the surgical units of Odense University Hospital during the period 1.6.-1.9.19

BACKGROUND: The invasive nature of surgery, with its increased exposure to blood, means that during surgery there is a high risk of transfer of pathogens. Pathogens can be transferred through contact between surgical patients and the surgical team, resulting in post-operative or blood borne infections in patients or blood borne infections in the surgical team. Both patients and the surgical team need to be protected from this risk. This risk can be reduced by implementing protective barriers such as wearing surgical gloves. Wearing two pairs of surgical gloves, triple gloves, glove liners or c

BACKGROUND: Liver tumors located in segments 7 and 8 pose a technical challenge to standard laparoscopic liver resection. Intraoperative placement of a surgical glove behind the right liver after the right triangular ligament and coronary ligament are divided facilitates liver exposure during parenchymal transection and control of the bleeding at the deeper part of the parenchymal plane. The aim of this study was to describe our standardized technique in detail and to assess the feasibility of this technique in patients with different clinical backgrounds and clarify the limits of this techniq

PURPOSE: To demonstrate a potential cause of a prolonged epidemic of diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK).
METHOD: This retrospective review analyzed an epidemic of diffuse lamellar keratitis over a 3-year period in a single surgery center. Altering the brand of surgical gloves used during surgery was associated with an elimination of the DLK epidemic. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were performed on both brands of surgical gloves to allow for comparisons and determine possible surface c

Background: The maintenance of an aseptic barrier between the surgical team and patient aids in the prevents the exposure of the patient to pathogens. Variations in gloving practice may have safety implications due to glove failure. Indicator gloving, where two pairs of different colored gloves are worn, is thought to add protection as it alerts the wearer to a breach. The aim of this systematic review and meta-synthesis was to assess the evidence in the literature on the benefit of indicator systems versus other forms of double gloving on puncture identification during surgery. Methods: A fou

PURPOSE: The goal was to evaluate the advent of surgical gloves during the eighteenth century, nineteenth century, and the beginning of the twentieth century.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used first drawings and paintings, then historical photographs identified in books after 1830 (date of discovery of the photography) or in medical reports of surgery and anesthesiologists. The pictures determined the presence or absence of gloves in the period corresponding to the changing understanding of aseptic and antiseptic techniques proposed by Lister and Pasteur.
RESULTS: There was an evolution of the m

PURPOSE: To determine the rate of glove perforation during hand surgery.
METHODS: We prospectively examined the rate of glove perforations among 10 fellowship-trained hand surgeons at our institution during a 6 week period. Gloves were tested for perforation using a water-fill technique at the conclusion of each surgical procedure. Surgeons recorded the presence of any glove perforations.
RESULTS: Eleven perforations were identified in 10 gloves among 600 surgical procedures during the study period. The perforation rate per case was 1.5% (95% confidence interval, 0.78% to 2.8%). Forty percen

Oral and maxillofacial surgery, which involves several sharp instruments and fixation materials, is consistently at a high risk for cross-contamination due to perforated gloves, but it is unclear how often such perforations occur. This study aimed to address this issue. The frequency of the perforation of surgical gloves (n=1436) in 150 oral and maxillofacial surgeries including orthognathic surgery (n=45) was assessed by the hydroinsufflation technique. Orthognathic surgery had the highest perforation rate in at least 1 glove in 1 operation (91.1%), followed by cleft lip and palate surgery (5
