BACKGROUND: Glycated hemoglobin (HgbA1C) is being increasingly used for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus due to its high availability and reproducibility. Several studies have shown that HgbA1C levels may be affected by levels of hemoglobin and nutritional factors associated with anemia, such as vitamin B12 and iron deficiency. However, none included elderly subjects. The aim of the present study was to investigate these effects in the older nondiabetic population.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study design was used. The computerized database of a large health management organization was

BACKGROUND: As the presence of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) affects the accuracy of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) analysis methods, HbA1c measurement may not be a good indicator for patients with neonatal diabetes mellitus, whereas glycated albumin (GA) may be a good indicator.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether total glycated hemoglobin (GHb) or HbF-adjusted HbA1c (adj-HbA1c) can act as a glycemic control marker in infants.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Plasma glucose (PG), GA, HbF, GHb measured using the affinity method, and HbA1c measured using the latex-immunoturbidimetry (LA) or the high-performance liquid c

The hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) assay provides a reliable measure of chronic glycemia and correlates well with the risk of long-term diabetes complications, so that it is currently considered the test of choice for monitoring and chronic management of diabetes. Recently, HbA1c testing has been included within the diagnostic criteria recommended for diagnosis of diabetes in nonpregnant individuals by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The emerging concept that HbA1c can be used rather than blood glucose in the diagnosis of diabetes is highly appealing for a variety of reasons, including less s

OBJECTIVE: Universal screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) using the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) has been recommended. In resource-poor environments, OGTTs are only administered to high-risk cases. In countries such as South Africa, where female obesity is common, this translates into high numbers of tests. We therefore investigated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), glycated albumin (GA) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) as OGTT alternatives.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in black South African women between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation who were at high risk for GDM (

BACKGROUND: The metabolic injury caused by protein glycation, monitored as the level of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), is not represented in most risk scores (i.e., Systematic Coronary Risk Estimation or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk scale).
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between HbA1c and the extent of subclinical atherosclerosis (SA) and to better identify individuals at higher risk of extensive SA using HbA1c on top of key cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs).
METHODS: A cohort of 3,973 middle-aged individuals from the PESA (Progression of E

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an important cause of macrosomia. The value of glycated albumin (GlyA) has been demonstrated to be a useful marker of glycemic control in pregnancy and a predictor of adverse perinatal outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the postnatal levels of GlyA and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) regarding the prenatal diagnosis of GDM in mothers of large-for-gestational-age (LGA) newborns.
METHODS: The study included mothers and their LGA newborns born between July 2017 and September 2019. The mothers were grouped

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a popular invaluable tool in the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes for red blood cells (RBCs) with a lifespan of 120 days; however, many factors, including hemoglobinopathies, affect its accuracy. Sickle cell trait, primarily a benign medical condition, is a point mutation in only one of two beta-globin genes on chromosome 11. We performed a traditional review to identify how the sickle cell trait (SCT) affects the interpretation of HbA1c and the further implications it may have on the diagnosis and management of Type 2 diabetes. A literature search was performed using Pub

To promote the standardization and harmonization of glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) testing results in medical laboratories across Beijing, we established a reference method for HbA1c. This method participated in the International Comparison Program for HbA1c Reference Laboratories organized by the European Reference Laboratory Network for HbA1c to validate its accuracy. The experimental samples consisted of HbA1c network reference laboratory proficiency testing samples imported annually from the Netherlands, including six calibrators (A-F), ten intercomparison samples, several quality control

Diabetes is a metabolic illness that increases protein glycosylation in hyperglycemic conditions, which can have an impact on almost every organ system in the body. The role of vitamin D in the etiology of diabetes under RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end products) stress has recently received some attention on a global scale. Vitamin D's other skeletal benefits have generated a great deal of research. Vitamin D's function in the development of type 1 and type 2 diabetes is supported by the discovery of 1,25 (OH)2D3 and 1-Alpha-Hydroylase expression in immune cells, pancreatic beta cell

Trifluoperazine (TFZ), a phenothiazine drug, penetrates into human erythrocytes and releases oxygen by interaction with hemoglobin. TFZ-induced oxygen release from hyperglycemic erythrocytes isolated from diabetic patients is considerably less compared to that from the cells of normoglycemic individuals. In diabetes mellitus, hemoglobin is significantly glycated by glucose. Non-glycated hemoglobin, HbA0 and its major glycated analog, HbA1c have been separated from the blood samples of diabetic patients. TFZ releases considerable amount of oxygen from HbA0, but very little from HbA1c. Spectrofl

Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) reflects the mean blood glucose over the lifespan of red blood cells and has become a valuable tool both for diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes. Nevertheless, some factors may under-estimate the HbA1c value, compromising its application. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the incidence rate of HbA1c lower than 4% and to identify some clinical and biological factors that can potentially reduce the HbA1c level. Between January 1st 2015 and October 1st 2017, we selected 17 patients with a HbA1c level lower than 4% that were measured in our labora

Atherosclerosis is a major complication of diabetes, increasing the risk of cardiovascular related morbidities and mortalities. The hallmark of diabetes is hyperglycemia which duration is best predicted by elevated glycated haemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels. Diabetic complications are usually attributed to oxidative stress associated with glycation of major structural and functional proteins. This non-enzymatic glycation of long lived proteins such as collagen, albumin, fibrinogen, liver enzymes and globulins result in the formation of early and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) associated w

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes screening is crucial in aviation medicine because of its impact on flight safety. This study compared the diagnostic performance of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in Polish Air Force pilots ages 45 yr and older and assessed their role in optimizing screening protocols. Additionally, the study examined the relationships between age, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and prediabetes or diabetes prevalence in this population.
METHODS: This study included 175 military flight personnel who were undergoing periodic medical examinations.

Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is widely used for monitoring and diagnosing human diabetes mellitus, but is rarely used in veterinary clinics. The goal of our study was to validate the commercial HbA1c testing system SD A1cCare analyzer (Bionote, Gyeoggi-do, South Korea) for use in dogs. Dogs were recruited with owner's consent. Diabetic status was determined based on clinical signs, fasting hyperglycemia, and glycosuria. Intra-assay precision and linearity were evaluated with EDTA, heparin, or citrate as anticoagulants, and had excellent precision with mean coefficients of variation (CVs) of
