Golf is currently the most frequently played sport in the world and it will continue to grow in importance. Nevertheless, there is a striking deficit in our knowledge of the physical and psychological profile of golfers. In the foreground are not the acute but the chronic sport specific injuries, predominantly of the lumbar spine, the upper extremities (golfer's elbow and golfer's shoulder), and less commonly of the lower limbs (minor injuries to the ligaments). In addition to therapy, prophylaxis should also be used in order to better recognise and influence the sport specific burdens.

Although often perceived as a leisurely activity, golf can be a demanding sport, which can result in injury, usually from overuse and sometimes from poor technique. The shoulder is a commonly affected site, with the lead shoulder, or the left shoulder in the right-handed golfer, particularly vulnerable to injury. A thorough understanding of the biomechanics of the golf swing is helpful in diagnosing and managing these injuries. Common shoulder problems affecting golfers include subacromial impingement, acromioclavicular arthrosis, rotator cuff tear, glenohumeral instability, and glenohumeral a

Golf is not a sport known for its high injury level; however, injuries do occur. Such mishaps usually involve overuse-type injuries that are more common among amateur golfers than among professional golfers. This article attempts to provide an overview of golf injuries to the elbow, with a concentration on incidence, proper diagnosis, adequate treatment (including rehabilitation), and prevention strategies. After reading this article, primary care physicians should be able to manage most golfing injuries to the elbow.

Although golfing is generally considered a begin activity, lower back pain is endemic among golfers. The golf swing subjects the lumbar spine to rapid, intense loads, more frequently in amateurs than in professionals. These loads predispose the golfing population to muscle strains, lumbar disc disease, spondylolysis, and facet joint arthropathy. It is imperative for all golfers to warm up properly, develop good swing mechanics, and participate in a lower back conditioning program off the golf course.

BACKGROUND: Due to its growing popularity golf has now come into the focus of orthopedic sports medicine. With a wide range of age groups and playing levels, orthopedic surgeons will encounter a wide range of musculoskeletal problems which are usually the result of overuse rather than trauma.
ANATOMY: The shoulder joint plays an important role in the golf swing whereby not only the muscles around the glenohumeral joint but also the scapula stabilizing muscles are extremely important for an effective golf swing.
INJURY PATTERNS: Golf is strictly not considered to be an overhead sport; however

OBJECTIVE: To review golf-related ocular injuries, which account for 1.5% to 5.6% of all sports injuries.
METHODS: During 8 years (1986 to 1994), a retrospective review of sports-related trauma was performed at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Eight blunt ocular injuries (four ruptured globes and four globes without rupture) caused by golf-related activities were identified. The four ruptured globes caused by golf-related trauma accounted for 1.2% of all penetrating injuries and/or ruptured globes and 11.7% of sports-related injuries.
RESULTS: A golf ball projectile was the mecha

BACKGROUND: Golf is enjoyed by over 108 million people globally, and has established elite female, male and disability competitive schedules. The use of golf carts during elite competition is a topic of discussion regarding the principles of inclusivity and competitive fairness with important scientific, legal and ethical considerations.
OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to evaluate the evidence relating to riding a golf cart in comparison to walking the golf course, pertaining specifically to: (1) inclusivity and safety, and (2) competitive fairness. The secondary aim was to identify knowledge

Golf is an asymmetric sport with unique patterns of injury depending upon the skill level. Higher handicap players typically experience injuries that result from swing mechanics, whereas lower handicap and professional players have overuse as the major cause of their injuries. The majority of shoulder injuries affecting golfers occur in the nondominant shoulder. Common shoulder injuries include subacromial impingement, rotator cuff pathology, glenohumeral instability, and arthritis involving the acromioclavicular and/or glenohumeral joints. We report a cluster of 4 cases of acute histoplasmosis (1 culture proven and 3 with positive serology, of which 2 were symptomatic) associated with exposure to soil during a golf course renovation. Patients in western Canada with compatible symptoms should be tested for histoplasmosis, regardless of their travel or exposure history.

There are specific injuries that are common in golf and racquet sports. These abnormalities have a predilection for specific structures as well and can be divided into two categories on the basis of etiology as either chronic repetitive injury or acute trauma. With golf injuries, upper extremity abnormalities prevail and include rotator cuff disease, epicondylitis, wrist tenosynovitis, and hamate hook fracture. Thoracolumbar spine pain can also occur. The order of frequency of these ailments is different for professional and recreational athletes. With racquet injuries, as in tennis, lower ext

Most of the work done by parks and golf course workers is performed outside, and they are subject to risks similar to those of other outdoor workers, such as temperature and weather-related problems, infectious diseases, and poisonous plants, snakes, and spiders. They are also exposed to physical hazards related to noise and operation of heavy equipment. Chemical hazards result from use of pesticides and solvents. This chapter reviews pertinent OSHA regulations, pre-placement strategies, and medical surveillance exams, and recommends preventive programs. More research is needed to determine sp

Sometimes, when a golfer attempts to putt a golf ball, it appears to enter the hole, only to re-emerge almost immediately, having undergone an angle of turn around the hole rim that can exceed 180 ∘ . We consider the problem from the point of view of mechanics. We show analytically that there are at least two distinct types of lip out: the rim lip out, where the centre of mass of the golf ball does not fall below the level of the green, and the hole lip out where it does. At the heart of both lip outs is a family of degenerate saddle equilibria of the dynamics on the rim (the golf balls of de

Golf has demonstrated increasing popularity and with this heightened enthusiasm has come an increased awareness of the significant number of injuries associated with playing golf. While back injuries represent the most commonly injured specific body part, upper extremity injuries are most frequent overall and the most likely to result in loss of play. Patterns of injury differ based on level of play and time spent playing or practicing golf. Among golf professionals, the hand/wrist is the most commonly injured upper extremity structure. Among amateurs, the elbow is most commonly injured. The v

BACKGROUND: Although golf is becoming more popular, there is a lack of reliable epidemiologic data on golf injuries and overuse syndromes, especially regarding their severity.
OBJECTIVE: To perform an epidemiologic study of the variety of different musculoskeletal problems in professional and amateur golfers and to find associations of age, sex, physical stature (body mass index), warm-up routine, and playing level with the occurrence of reported injuries.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: We analyzed the injury data from a total of 703 golfers who were randomly selected ov

Golf injuries of the wrist are rare, but when they occur they can be devastating for the avid golfer, competitive amateur golfer, or the professional golfer, as the hand and wrist are so integral to the game. The majority of golf injuries are overuse injuries of the wrist flexor or extensor tendons. The left wrist (in the right-handed golfer) is the most common location. Analysis of the golf swing finds excessive motion of the left wrist (in the right-handed golfer), along with a catapulting function, accounting for vulnerability of the left wrist to injury. Hyperextension and radial deviation

Object: Although contact sport-related head injuries are frequently reported, golf cart accidents may have significant consequences including severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) or head injury. As no standardized regulations exist, this mechanism may be underreported. Methods: A retrospective review of TBI or cranial trauma after a golf cart accident at a level I trauma center over 5 years were performed. Data regarding age, sex, race, initial Glasgow Coma Scale score, alcohol status, type and location of the injury, and outcomes were analyzed and reported in terms of Modified Rankin Scale (MR

We present a case of Netherton disease, where the hairs lacked the characteristic microscopic feature of trichorrhexis invaginata. In its place were certain hairs with a golf tee morphology. These represent the proximal half of the invaginate node seen in typical Netherton disease. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated the three-dimensional quality of this abnormality, which is subtle when assessed by light microscopy alone. We describe this sign so that it might be recognized when seen in isolation, as here, and allow the diagnosis of Netherton disease to be confirmed.
